Cleaning vinyl with WD-40?

I just had my back hatches vinyl redone and I asked the guy that did the work what is a good product to clean the interior of my boat... he suggested wd-40. I've heard of a lot of different things on an interior but never wd-40. Anyone tried it or has anyone heard of this? Just want some input before I actually try it.

Don't do it. Worst advise I've seen in a long time.

Curious about this one. Never heard that. I would imagine it might be a decent solution for trying to get an oil stain or small stain out of your vinyl, but seems crazy to think you would clean your vinyl with that. Can't be good, but curious to follow this thread....

he's probably right to spot clean something. i wouldnt use it that much but if you have something that doesnt come up i would try.

a few years back i had some white plastic sitting in my back seat in the hot sun over night/mourning, the heat and imprinted the square white mark of the plastic in the black leather. the only thing that would get it out was WD-40 and then i treated it w/ cleaner/protecter over it.

so like a blood stain, or oil spill or something deep in there, it would probably work, but NOT for a full on cleaning session.

I would bet Totally Awesome Cleaner Degreaser for $1.00 wil do it better and cheaper than WD40 all day long.

The guy I hired to put new vinyl in my old Tige uses turpentine which works but I found from my own experience that when you need to clean ground in dirt from neglected vinyl, nothing works better than Malco. Buy it online by the gallon and it will set you back around $40 after shipping. After you see it work on your boat vinyl you'll start using it for all kinds of other cleaning jobs as well. It's better than any other cleaning product I've used for plastic and vinyl. It's a bit harsh and isn't for the every day clean. It's for that post winter layup stored outside spring cleaning or the I just got a sweet deal on a neglected dirty boat clean.

dont use petroleum based products ( wd-40) to clean vinyl...it will ruin the vinyls top coat ( protective layer).

bftskir 06-24-2013 1:34 PM

$40? waste o money.

somebody here ran malco and TA thru a spectrograph and determined they were nearly identical in chemical make up.

$1.00 for a big bottle of TA.

Isn't Malco out of business or is that another brand that TA wiped out?

WD-40 is a petroleum product and will act as a surfactant for many oils to it can clean. Then, of course you have to clean the WD-40 off. You could use Naptha and then it would evaporate so you would not have residue. That would kill the vinyl after a few applications but, hey, it would be clean when it started cracking.
If you were to use kerosene it would evaporate and leave behind a nice paraffin layer to protect the vinyl. Also it would have that nice camping smell to make you feel like your in the outdoors while driving the boat.

Maybe just use a cleaner and a scrub brush then rinse with clean water.
