What is the best boat for under 15k

I am currently deployed and want to get back into boarding when I get home in 8 months. I use to compete at the semi pro level when I was younger and my family owned a 01 super air and I was running about 3500lbs in it. I have always been a fan of the malibu wakes but the older sunsetters are few and far between in my price range. I have seen a few mastercraft maristar 225's and some older supras but never have I road behind one. I no the 205 hull is similar to the early x stars to any sugestions are greatly appreciated

jhartt3 06-12-2012 4:45 AM

Hydrodyne Grandsport if you can find one. There are a few out there right now on boat trader. My opinion you won't find better wake for your dollar under 15k. and the next step is to go up in price to 20kish and get a V drive.

WSRarmy 06-12-2012 4:50 AM

I would love to bump up the price but I have a family to also take care of but yeah a V drive is the way to go for sure

jhartt3 06-12-2012 4:56 AM

If you can find a grandsport then go for it. You dont even really need to weight it and it throws a nice wake. Of course with weight it gets bigger.

WSRarmy 06-12-2012 5:13 AM

Thanks I will deffinatly look into one of those!

WSRarmy 06-12-2012 5:26 AM

I am still open to any more suggestions thanks

Sold our 95' Supersport nautique (same hull as the Super Air you had) - tower, ballast, stereo, prop, dual axle trailer, etc etc for $16k... still one of the best wakes out there right now

vette74 06-12-2012 5:37 AM

Sanger V210 if you look hard you can find them under 15

jhartt3 06-12-2012 5:48 AM

Nick how many hours were on you Supersport

That is a DEAL, barring condition/hours

Bolo 06-12-2012 7:39 AM

Sanger v210. Can usually find nice ones for around or under 15k. Quality built boat with a great wake for super cheap.

bass10after 06-12-2012 7:46 AM

I just picked up a 1999 maristar 230vrs w 328hrs for 15500 and came w fat sacks jackets tube etc. The Interior looks brand new- the exterior is in good shape but could use a wet sand to look even better. I feel like I got that once in a lifetime deal though, as most go for quite a bit more...

650 hours.

humboldt9 06-12-2012 10:57 AM

I 3rd the V210, you can easily find a late 90's model on Craigslist for under $15k. Add some weight to the front and you'll have a great wake with lots of room and storage.

petrey10 06-12-2012 1:51 PM

I am might be looking at selling my 2001 20i with 450 hours for about 13k if you didn't mind a DD.... PM if you would be interested... if not its cool

wakebordr11 06-12-2012 3:16 PM

Excuse my ignorance Jess, but could you please post a pic of your wake- he's used to a slammed super air, I doubt the dyne will even come close to holding a candle.

Wes- 15 is probably going to favor the direct drive market. You probably have options in that price range like a 93+ sport nautique- same hull as the super air until 07. Prostar 205/205v- same hull as the original x star, x2 then x1. Late 90s sunsetter lx, not lxi model, direct drives. It depends what you ultimately want to do but if you want long lasting quality and pro-caliber wake, those are your best bets. If you don't mind size and want to save more get an 82-89 Nautique 2001, my favorite wake out there- since its consistent and my buddy keeps it at my house

Raf1985 06-12-2012 9:45 PM

I have a pretty nice direct drive all setup for $8k.

ralph 06-13-2012 12:19 AM

4th sanger v210, best bang for your buck in that price range.

kirk 06-13-2012 7:01 AM

Uhh... that would HAVE to be this one....

I dont know how it would compare to a super air with 3500 pounds of ballast. but i'd put it up against any of the prostars or sport nautiques or sunsetters... and definitely better than a 2001. But for 15k your at best looking at an old sunsetter or 2001. not a 205 or sport unless you find a steal on one.

My point is, this guy is going to sack out his boat, he's not riding a stock wake often. I'm not sure of your logic- 15k is a good deal on an old sport, 205, or sunsetter, 1996ish era. All 3 of those boats are the DD counterparts of some of the most popular boats in wake history. And will make nearly the same wake. I disagree your boat is capable of competing with these boats- maybe with no ballast, sure, but not with 2k. 1993-2006 sport is the same hull as the super air. I believe 1992 205- current? X1 is the same hull- if they still make the x1. Unsure of the sunsetters, I'm inclined to believe I wouldn't go older than 98 or 97 to match the good wakesetter hull from the late 90s early 2000s...

On another thread someone netted a supersport which was MINT, for 19.5, polished out, insanely mice trailer, ballast installed.

I wouldn't pay over 10 for a 2001 Nautique, doesn't matter what was done to it. More like 8 with tower etc and new interior.

wakebordr11 06-13-2012 7:48 AM

Read your post wrong, but still, those boats can be had for 15... It's a buyers market with everything and you can go down to the early 90s and the boats that are usually for sale weren't BEAT or sacked. They were babied and have 350hrs on say a 94 sport. If you can handle teal or purple colors, that's what I'd buy...

WSRarmy 06-15-2012 11:34 AM

What you got for 8k?

WSRarmy 06-15-2012 11:42 AM

Thanks for all the help now I have a better idea of what to look for, Its kind of hard to go from competing and riding behind all the newer boats and thankfully having parents and sponsors to beable to get the best boat possible to having to try to do it on my own and support a family

Not looking to trade anymore though, already bought a supra.

boardjnky4 06-16-2012 4:42 AM

There is a barefoot nautique on raleigh Craigslist for below 14k. Vdrive. Worth a look.

Wes, please don't buy this boat. Sorry to toss you under the bus Raf but wasn't that boat made by bayliner? Bays were not built well in that era.

Wes if you want a project, find an old supra Sunsport. There's actually a nice looking refinished one in the classified for 11.9. You could probably knock him down a bit... If you're looking 15 once again, older Sanger 210, sport nautiques and mastercraft 205s...

Raf1985 06-17-2012 10:09 AM

Not sure if it was built by bayliner. But after 20 years and still a solid boat, something tells me its not that bad.

wakebordr11 06-17-2012 9:09 PM

You're dreaming that that thing is worth 9 grand man. More like 3500-4000.

Raf1985 06-17-2012 11:03 PM

Since i'm in no hurry to sell it and dont need the money I can post it for whatever I want. But you can go ahead and tell that to the person that bought the bone stock one for $7000 here.

Plus I dont think I (or anyone) asked for your opinion on its value.

About as sick as a ski challenger for 9 grand.

Nobody asked for your unsolicited sales attempt either Raf.

Good luck with your quest Wes, its a buyers market out there, you should be able to find a nice inboard with tower and ballast included for 15.

Raf1985 06-18-2012 7:31 AM

You are pretty quick to badmouth other boats but in the end remember you own a 99 tige............

wakebordr11 06-18-2012 9:16 AM

Nice try Raf. When did I badmouth a boat til you stepped in trying to sell your overpriced garbage- that's badmouthing a boat btw...

Thanks for knocking my Tige, Dick, but you'll notice I didn't try to sell him mine, or any others like mine- know why?- because I'm honest in my assessment of what it is, a decent all around towboat from 1999. Wes is a better rider than me coming from a pro caliber boat.
If he wanted to slalom 30% of the time, board 30% of the time and surf 30% of the time(did 10 hrs of surfing with friends this past weekend, its no Centurion Enzo but its fun and big for a DD), cruise the other 10% I would suggest my boat- only for smaller lakes due to the low free board.

I am fortunate to have had my boat available to me at free will as the family boat for 12 years. Take a free shot at me- its not mine, I keep it as my own. If I were to buy and were in Wes' position, the boats I listed would be at the top of the list.

Also, the tige is probably worth an honest 13-14 in this market. Judging by your scale I think I'll put it on sale at 25 though...

Raf1985 06-18-2012 9:24 AM

I am also honest, my boat throws a good wake for the price its listed at. Its no G23 wake, but I can almost guarantee that you cant find another boat for $8000 that puts out a wake like this one. I'll be more than happy to provide pics if need be. You cant knock a boat until you've seen it and the wake it throws out.

But I'm not one to argue over the internet where everyone seems to have a 14" e-penis so I'm done here. If anyone wants to verify the boat and the wake feel free to hit me up.

wakebordr11 06-18-2012 9:29 AM

Watch for deals like this Wes. High pole and a couple bags and you'll be real close to that beloved super air- they have the same hull

Post pics then, make me a believer that its as good or better than a 2001 Nautique. Hope that wedge was installed well and all on the stern of that boat. I'd never put a wedge on anything but a 'Bu that was DESIGNED for it

Yes the WHOLE transom was reinforced with aluminum and plenty of fiberglass. Here's a pic of the surf wake and one of the wake at 21mph. I never said it was better than a 2001 but for $8k I dont think its that bad.
