Do spins look Cool with out a grab?

If you spin 5 and below, and not o/a is it possible to look cool with out a grab?

hypride135 08-24-2011 2:34 PM

on axis spins look cooler than o/a anyway. I think it's possible even though a grab always helps!

hco 08-24-2011 2:49 PM

depends on if you spin like a gymnast or not. gotta keep those knees tucked.

ironj32 08-24-2011 2:58 PM

just remember that "cool" is all in the eyes of the beholder. do what feels good to you and what makes you have fun.

benjaminp 08-24-2011 3:20 PM

^This. Do lowered trucks look cool? Are European imports cooler than American muscle? Is red cooler than blue?

cheesydog 08-24-2011 9:22 PM

Its all subjective but grabbing demonstrates control and mastery over a trick. Thats why essentially a grabbed trick always looks better.

Having said that there are things you can do to make an ungrabbed trick look stylish. Stall it out as long as possible, poke it, shifty. Again these things show how comfortable a rider is with the trick, which is what makes it look better.

Sounds like a fun boat to ride behind. What do you do, bust out a knife and cut the rope? Loosen up bro, it's supposed to be fun. I could care less if someone grabs or doesn't. As long as they are having fun that's the most important thing.

ironj32 08-25-2011 3:11 AM

^^^Tommy, he's just being faceitous^^^

flydenrict 08-25-2011 7:18 AM

 Keeping both hands on the handle for 180s is a good way to add style!

jjakober 08-25-2011 9:50 AM

Who cares as long as you are having fun!

Classic. That made me laugh

snoopy1173 08-25-2011 11:02 AM

i dont care grabs or not but i always thought landing wrapped on spins looked cool. Like toeside frontside 3's or 7's. Or heelside backside 180's, 540's. Theres certain spins where landing wrapped has always looked cool to me.

The coolest spins I've ever seen are OA non-grabbed spins by Parks. 12 honkeys had a bunch of spins where he would "fake grab" and they looked so awesome.

^ by the way - best part in a movie ever.... Parks was so far ahead of his time

joebob 08-25-2011 11:11 AM

What about the angry pirate grab, the michael jackson, or the fashon air? Do those count?

08-25-2011 12:15 PM

Im all for grabbing your board if u can, but I'm not gonna call someone a kook for not having the skill or flexibility to make it happen yet. No one comes out of the womb grabbing spins.

hypride135 08-25-2011 12:38 PM

wow! I see where randall got his motivation from to go sooo huge!

+1 I so prefer this style of angry aggressive riding to the water ballet that is in vogue now. Not disrespecting the super tech riding of today's pro's, just stating my preference of what I would rather watch.

The reentry BS 5 at 2:50 still blows my mind.

jmuthafnp 08-25-2011 5:12 PM

Here's a Heel Front 3 by me without a grab. I think it looks pretty good, you be the judge:

That's the cool thing about wakeboarding, you make it how you want and do things how you like.

Not saying PB didn't or doesn't motivate Randall but those guys have been going that big forever, they're similar age if I'm not mistaken and basically grew up on the protour back in the day together. That being said, those old movies are still the best in my mind.

Question though... what board pops harder, parks IBEX, or his free motion continuous rockered (probably 2.2-2.5" of rocker) from back in the day... amazing really once again what those guys did with smaller wakes 'lesser' boards. I know I'll be forever humbled.

Sorry for the thread jack. I like to grab everything I can but I still say its cool whether you grab or not.

501s 08-26-2011 12:13 AM

You watch that section, and I have to say, he was putting it on the line on almost half those tricks. Double flips on double ups. Everything he did was big. You have to admit that a fair share of the more recent video sections don't have that kind of amplitude in their riding. I also agree with the previous poster about prefering to watch this kind of video section.

I think this looks good cuz u spin with your board not ahed of it, and your knees are tucked.

andy_nintzel 08-26-2011 2:33 PM

Gawd I love Parks' section in 12 HOnkeys. Just amazing. The boards look so old school now. The Sliders are just hood and little. But the Riding, still on a different level. The dubs are SO meaty!

sexyws6mama 08-27-2011 5:32 AM

IMO clean on axis spins look the best.
