WakeWorld - Project news concerning San Diego reservoirs

Nothing new here, just posting some info from the paper and a couple of websites. The new Olivenhain reservoir, which is near Elfin Forest and Lake Hodges, is at around 50' depth. The plan is to bring it up to 300' deep and 200 surface acres; about the same acreage as San Vicente's back bay. The water storage here will be for emergency use and eventually a pipeline will be built to connect to Lake Hodges so it can fulfill its role better at being a major water storage reservoir. As of now and the forseeable future, no boats of any kind will be allowed on the Olivenhain reservoir. Can't really complain too much about this being that the water will not be flushing through any time soon to keep contaminants(oil) at a minumum. They are going to control what flows into the reservoir from the canyons so as to minimize the influx of pollutants. http://www.nctimes.net/news/2003/20030317/55900.html I don't know how much Canyon Lake is flushed out on a regular basis; kind of curious how the water quality is there. Is that water eventually used for consumption? Even if this reservoir was eventually opened to recreational boaters it wouldn't take many boats to create "roller hell." In 7-8 years a project to extend the height of the existing dam at San Vicente will begin. They have approval for the modified dam to be 54' higher than the existing one. The latest master plan calls for an additional 64' for a total of 118' height extension! But that will require an EIR that may or may not be approved. If it was raised 118' there is a home on the south shore that could probably build a boathouse. Great news you say! Here's the catch. An inlet/outlet tower needs to be built. The lake will have to be drained temporarily for this to occur. The only freshwater option in San Diego County for wakeboarding will be closed for an estimated 24-36 months. OUCH!! Just like the dilemma at Castiac, where will everyone go? El Capitan? No. Lower Otay? No. Diamond Valley? No. The silver lining here(if there is one) is that we have some time to hopefully open some other areas to boating before the San V project begins.
