Has anyone ever used a ported sub on a boat? I am going to mount a sub by the driver's feet and thought about porting it. I am just worried about the moisture rusting the tensil leads? Anyone ever do it?

my friend has a ported sub in his 05 x star..they took out the stock sub and put that mesh material over the hole and the port fires right into the boat...it is really loud and sounds good. he hasn't had any problems with it.

i had 1 ported jl 12 under driver's dash in my mobius had no problems just waterproof your box with fiberglass resign or something else and you will be fine.

Unless you're an absolute purist and like to tinker a lot, sealed subs generally sound better.

JM2C

I currently have a ported JL W6 under the drivers dash of my VLX. The slot port fires up and rattles the crap out of everything on the dash. It sounds good but Im currently swapping it for a sealed box, just sounds better IMO with less air vibration from the port.

what if the port was pointing forward?

I have a ported enclosure with 2 JL W3's. It sounds pretty good. And the port is firing forward.

Ported seems to work fine in our nautique.

TY-Yes the port firing into open air would negate the vibration, on my boat at least. I have always had sealed subs and this was my 1st ported. Like I said it does sound good but I like the sound of sealed better.

Porting is louder and generally handles more power when done properly.....

Unfortunately most are not done properly. There is a lot of software and/or calculations to get the port dimensions correct for the box size.

Sealed boxes are a no brainer. You can build a box that's close to the correct volume and get away with it. Generally most go with a sealed box in a boat or car because of that.

I've done both and ended up re-building the ported box because it had too much port noise (my port ended up being too close to the back wall of the box when assembled).

Ported is good if you is a gangsta hoopsta and like to listen to a lotta "whoop der it is".

When you run the calculations, you will find in general a ported sub also requires a box that is around 2x the size of a sealed enclosure. It is not like you can take a sealed box and add a port on a whim. Also through the parameters for the speaker, you port needs to be tuned for the speaker. The port adds a 3dB boost at the port frequency and is out of phase with the forward speaker wave. That is why you can play the speaker a little harder because the port helps control speaker motion. One drawback that you may not be aware of is that below the port turned frequency, the speaker can unload on you. My guess is at a harmonic or something. That means your speaker will have zero control at a frequency that will want to shoot it out the boat. So, don't make your frequency too high and that is also why you sometimes see a subsonic filter on some of the old amps.

Ported enclosures work best when built right for open areas. I run one 12" by the driver's feet, port firing forward. Sealed enclosures are much simpler to build, and work better for closed areas, such as cars, trucks, etc. Ported work better in open areas such as boats. Home theater systems usually run ported subs, because they are usually in an open area. Most concerts subs are the same also. In all, both can be made to sound good.

In my experience I find sealed subs to work better.

I talked to a technician/speaker designer and he states that the general moisture in the boat will oxidize anfd degrade the tensil leads within 3 years.
