Check out my chart... I update it every day in anticipation of our trip on late July.

The water level is only 59' below the dam right now, and it's only mid-February!

Look at how this year (green line) is shaping up vs. 2009 (red line) and 2008 (blue line).

Thats great. Missed our annual trip to Shasta the last two years because of low water levels. This year is looking good but I may go a little earlier, like mid-June maybe.
Sparky... I went in late June last year. The water was 60' below the dam (exactly where it is today) and about 80 degrees. Air temp was low 90's.

IMO, June is perfect! It's less crowded, the water level is higher, the water temp is good, and air temp is still reasonable.
Hopefully the storms keep coming. Doesn't look like any due through next weekend. Strong start but we need a strong middle and end also to fill all the reservoirs up.
"Missed our annual trip to Shasta the last two years because of low water levels." ????
We go to Shasta in August every year. At 130 feet down, it's still a huge lake. Once you're on the water you don't notice the water level too much. You do notice that there are fewer people and better wakeboarding though! It's nice not to have to fight for the good water.
^^^ Thats all great exept when you're shore camping, and the hike to the campground is a ten to fifteen minute hike! I like to go in early July so the possibility of thunder storms is gone but probably going to go a little earlier this time.

(Message edited by wake_upppp on February 13, 2010)

Sparky- I second that. Hiking 200 yards up a fairly steep bank while hauling tents, coolers, etc. is exhausting. Nothing like camping at Shasta, though.
DBC, This is awesome. Keep it up. I am going to shasta on the fourth of july and this info is great. Thanks
Oh how I can't wait for July Houseboat trip!
DBC, Any updates on your little green line?
Only 50 feet down now!
you mean 49' Nice to see it filling. Still need some other lakes to fill. Still need lots more rain and snow so we all have a good summer.
48' below the dam as of 2/24/10. The rate of increase has slowed recently. In January we averaged 1.4' a day. February has been 1.2' day, but only 0.6' over the last week.

WE NEED MORE RAIN! I'm afraid it will stall out at about 30' below the dam. They will likely start to drain it early June.

I guess the good news is that the lake is more full today than it's highest point in either 2008 or 2009. And we still have three months before they start to let the water out.

Here is the updated chart...

(Message edited by ixfe on February 25, 2010)

Good guess on the 30ft below the dam. I have a bet that the water will peak 27 feet below the dam. Free tank of gas if I win!
I hope those numbers come true. That'll get me there in late June fo sho!
Pic I took Sunday from Bridge Bay. Taken with my phone so not the best.

Lake is now under 30'. Been in the high 70's here all week so no rain but another storm or two would sure make it even better.
Keep on filling baby!
once the snowpack starts to melt it will rise more. it's lookin good at -30'!!!!
26 feet
Yeah I can't wait, this pic was from Aug 06... We'll be going back for sure this year!

It must be raining there today and more water has to be filling it up even farther. any updates with that chart. I cant wait for the fourth of july. It should be epic this year.
Tony,
Your wish is my command! The lake is just 25' below the dam! http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p...asta033110.jpg |
DBC, Wow thanks thats awesome. Can I get you to talk to my wife and kids for me? haha. Anyway 25' and rising looks like it is gonna be a great year for shasta.
Yeah its been raining steady here all day and no sign of slowing up.
Drove past Shasta yesterday on my way up to Washington, and in all honesty that is the fullest I have seen it in four years. Fired up! When I did this same drive 6 months ago there was not even water in the northern parts of the lake. I will try and get a pic on my way back down on the 20th.
Pete, I drove by on our way back from Socal spring break this past Sunday. At 25' below the dam the lake look damn near full... very little exposed shoreline.
This pic was taken yesterday (not mine). http://cdn.cloudfiles.mosso.com/c54102/x2_ff4132 |
I have never been to Shasta before. We are planning a mid summer trip for 4 days up there. Where should I go? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Again Don. |
don make sure you plan a day trip to whiskeytown, its a beautiful crystal clear lake there you could camp right on the water for a night as well, imo its one of the secrets of redding the only problem with whiskeytown though is that it is prone to wind. Shasta is epic as well but its also huge and takes a while to get places.
Like you said, Whiskeytown can get blown out in a hurry, and its like 10 degrees colder, but on a good day that place is great.

Whiskytown is great but you'll have a hard time getting a spot on the water this late. They're usually all booked up by now. Also it sucks for boarding 90% of the time. Just a bunch of tubers and sail boats. |
I've been to Whiskeytown, and I know it gets blow out a lot. I haven't decided on what we are going to do. We had a couple bail on us, so doing the houseboat thing is out. Now I am looking at an RV. If we do that we can hit a couple of lakes(Shasta/Bullards). Any opions what would be best. There are 5 of us going(me/wife, 2 kids and my nephew).
Thanks for any ideas. Don |
Best camping on the lake campground wise is defiantely Antlers. Holliday Harbor is pretty nice but not alot of spots there. Shore camping would be Jones Valley inlet or Gregory Beach if your gonna do an RV.
Heres a link to Antlers http://www.antlersrvpark.com/ |
So stoked its going to be full this year. Missed last two years due to low water. And actually the best shore camping in my eyes is on the McLoud Arm, but Id have tro kill you if I told you why its so good or where its at...:)

WOW, you wouldn't care to elaborate on the ballast setup in that boat would you? I can't wait to see the rest of the pics Riley. Shasta trip this summer, Hmm? I have never been and would love to go.
Yeah I believe there is a Shasta trip in the works for our crew, sounds like we will be heading out of Silverthorn resort.. I don't know how much Ballast Mikey was using I know he weights his boat down with lead and ballast but he didn't have his lead in that day as his boat was brand new from the factory and he was on his way back home.
Crappy phone pic but its from today at lunch. Centimudi launch ramp, thats the damn off to the left. Only 9' more to go.
