Mounting amp rack to hull?
 

Just wondering what some of you have done to mount a amp rack? I thought I had seen people cut out some of the carpet on the inside hull and glue some wood blocks to the fiberglass as spacers then screw down the sheet of ply to the blocks. Would this work? I was thinking of using something like liquid nail and some marine ply.

Any suggestions?

Use epoxy as an adhesive. Nothing else is acceptable and please attempt to give yourself large surface areas for a bond line. Take some 80 grit and scuff the hull interior before gluing. Marine ply is fine but I'm partial to solid hardwood. HD has dimensioned oak as a good choice without buying a 100$ sheet of plywood. Oak wont rot in your lifetime, likes to be glued and wont sluff the epoxy. Starboard and plastics can be difficult to glue. Just hold the wood in place with mach II tape until the epoxy kicks.

It works. I have done it and it seems to last. I like to use stuff that won't hold moisture though, like Trex, HDPE, or Starboard. Either do that, build a nice rack out of steel or aluminum, or build a false wall atteched to the floor. I prefer to keep wood out of boats if you can.

I used a sheet of ABS board. It's the same stuff they (nautique) used in the engine surround. I just screwed it onto the side wall. Nautique are double walled most of the way up. I did'nt loose any of my storage. The sheets come in different thickness, just like plywood. 1/4 inch is very rigid!

how do you deal with the flexing of the hull? I just figured that since the hull flexes anything rigid mounted to it would have to eventually come loose. Is that not really a concern?

Epoxy is great, as baitkiller suggests but I used a urethane based adhesive to provide more flexibility with easier installation. It can also be removed more easily than epoxy. if you need to install a different sized mounting piece onto the hull later.
