Just wondering what kind of wake you can through with these things. Im on a bigtime low budget and seems like the older direct drives are super reasonable with tower and ballast. How much will it hold a rider back not being a V drive??? Also curious on power??? I found a older supra maria with some sort of V8 and a lot of ballast, can you still put 5 to 7 people in the boat and get a rider up??? Thanks for any help!!!
First of all, what is your budget?
lookin for somethin around $15k
yeh that boat would have a small block 350
My friend has a direct drive malibu and with the wedge stock ballast and with 7 or 8 people the wake will be plenty for anything you would like to do. If you outgrow that wake then we will all know your name and be admiring you.
Sweet!!! That will be my goal then! <BR> <BR>As far as power these things will get up on plane fairly quick???
if seating configuration holds you back, you have serious issues. <BR> <BR>look for older supras, MCs CCs <BR> <BR>a different prop can usually help with hole shot <BR> <BR>(Message edited by denverd1 on February 12, 2008)

i know it would cost to ship but this is probably the best deal you can find and it's a v drive nautique <BR> <BR><a href="http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/boa/568529299.html" target="_blank">http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/boa/568529299.html</a>

a friend of mine has a sweet older supra for sale, give him a call 414-531-2186 his name is mike <BR> <BR>kal
I have a 2000 MB DD and with 5-6 people, full tank of gas and about few hundy in ballast it throws a pretty big wake. I would prefer bigger but all of my friend's think it's huge.
That nautique is a SWEET deal!!! I might have to check that one out!!!
we had an old hyrdodyne direct drive, had room from 6~ counting a drive but the wake was actually pretty good. <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65919/544769.jpg" alt="Upload">
and we sold that for 8k with tower, ballast, good tower audio and subs... like 700 hrs but rebuild at 500 hrs.
nick, were you limited by the wake on that hydrodyne at all????
My 91 Sunsport throws a badass wake with about 1700 lbs in it <BR> <BR>(Message edited by lovin_the_wake on February 12, 2008)

not really, i think i still would have progressed fine with it, but we ended up selling it for a Nautique supersport (vdrive, we only paid 18k for it from the twin cities, so its close to your price range for a v-drive, some has a sanger V210 on the classifieds too, donno where it is but 19k for everythign you'll ever need... our college's ski team boat is a 87? American Skiier, no tower/highpole/ no ballast beside 3/4 people that will fit in it... I can do most tricks through 5's and basic flips and stuff...but beyond that its pretty tough. <BR> <BR>t <BR> <BR>(Message edited by sidekicknicholas on February 12, 2008)

Nick did you and some friends go in on a boat or your parents or how you affordin that thing??? I saw your monthly payment post is that seriously all you pay a month or is that your part of the payment????
i sold the hydrodyne and got 8k to my pocket...took a loan for 4k for tower, ballast, speakers, etc etc (my payment) and my friend put up 10k...we are half and half, but live next to each other so it works out perfectly
dang.... lucky.... my friends are like "ill pay gas".....
hey man I would just man up and take out a loan for whatever u need; interest rates are low right now
Rates are low right now and will be dropping for about the next year or so. So now is not a bad time to buy a boat at all.
This behind my '00 Malibu Sunsetter LXI, it's for sale as well just looking for a new home. <BR> <BR><a href="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/8/540022.html?1201720534" target="_blank">http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/8/540022.html?1201720534</a> <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65919/544936.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65919/544937.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR> <BR>(Message edited by malibudude on February 12, 2008)

The original Xstar, Same hull as the x2 and now x1. I use to have one. WIth a couple of sacs and some peeps, the wake is outstanding. Power was never an issue.
If a DD wake holds you back and it's still on a good hull i.e. early 90s maristars, prostar 205's. CC 2001's from the 80's, nautique super sports, older bu's, then we are not worthy of you. <BR> <BR>I went out with Justin Harrellson a few weeks back, and he has an 03 Nauti sport DD. not to much wake, a really mellow rise, and he was throwing 7's, crow mobes, Tantrums to blind, basically anything any advanced rider or pro would throw down(he did win worlds, twice). <BR> <BR>DD wake will not hold you back.
pick up a copy of Switch 22 or any old wake vids. Most all riding is behind direct drives and they go as big as anyone today.
I started out behind a Malibu Sportster LX with a Wedge, we usually added 500lbs. to each side of the engine box and that boat had a great wake. The biggest benefit you get from a V-Drive is the room. A dd will definitely not hold you back. Good luck.
i spent a lot of time in my families 97 malibu sunsetter. d-drive. if the boat hadnt crashed into some rocks at an unmarked location at mead the boat would still be running great. the last time i rode behind it i put 3 500 sacks in the back, one on eitherside of the engine, one in the ski locker in the bow, one on top of the locker and about 500 in lead under the seats in the bow and had about 7 people in the boat and got on plane pretty well. took about a 1/4 mile but it made it. ran that boat like that for about 5 years and had no engine probs. so in total it had about 5000 lbs. huge wake. very fun.
You could buy my 2001 and have it shipped in your price range. With the ballast loaded and 6 people on board she'll still yank anyone out of the water no problem. Strongest pulling boat I've ever been behind but as people are pointing out, interior room is an issue <BR> <BR><a href="http://www.planetnautique.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=1 0198" target="_blank">http://www.planetnautique.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=1 0198</a> <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65919/544996.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65919/544997.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65919/544998.jpg" alt="Upload">

I have a '87 Ski Nautique 2001 that will be for sale in the early spring, And it is located near Otter Tail Lake, Mn. Only about an hour and 15 minutes from Fargo. Right around 10 Grand, like 450 hours but needs a little TLC on the seats. It almost looks identical to J Wilsons boat but with a little different tower, and an identical box built in the rear that fits a 750 Fly High sac in it perfect. The Fiberglass on this boat is spotless no big scratches or chips.
J Wilson I like your handle!!! I got the same one. Sweet thanks everyone for your help!!! Im definately not afraid to go direct drive anymore! I found a supra maria with tower and a custom ballast system with automatic pumps and the guy is only askin $7500. Think I might pick it up for the summer and see how I fare.
yea my dd 21+ ft 98inch beam with deep vhull supra launch has a very nice wake ,its big clean and has one of the best shopes you will find out there.. <BR> <BR>I put 2250 pounds in it and only one sack is on floor ,the rest is in the trunk and in the front and back lockers all plumbed into auto fill switches.... <BR> <BR>mine is a 2000 but you can find a 1990-1997 supra sunsport and its almost the same boat and im sure one in your price range.. <BR> <BR>this boat is rated at 13 passengers and 1775 pounds and can comfortably put ten people in it and still have fun.. <BR> <BR>not a small boat by any means ..
hey i got a 88 supra mariah its a 351 ford in it. we had 4 sacs in it and 7 people in it with a stock prop it wasnt bad at all getting up on plane cant find any wake pics from that day sorry<img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65919/545226.jpg" alt="Upload">
Matt Thanks!!!! your post pretty much seals my mind that im gonna get that supra!!! Power in never an issue you say????
the only thing i would say is that some drivers have a hard time maintaning the speed with that much weight. im putting perfect pass in this summer so that shouldnt be a problem. the only other advice is look out for rotten stringers and floors, there not fun to replace.
At $15K you might be able to get into a v-drive if you shop hard and are patient. The second owner of my old ride, an '00 Centurion Eclipse, was bought for $15K with tower, EFI, and PP last year. I have seen some pre '00 BUs, Centurions, Tiges, Moombas sell for around $15K.
our SSNautique was 18k... and we didn't try to low ball the guy...15k and v-drive is possible
7500 for the supra and you have an extra 7500 for no worries buying new gear and lots of gas this summer. seems like a no brainer. Nothing beats a direct drive for ease of servicing. You can do everything yourself very easily if you're into that.
I agree that 15K for a V-drive is possible, but as somebody with cash in hand and actively pursuing a V-drive, people aren't willing to come off the price that much currently. I don't know if it is the state of the market with new boats costing so much and the economy being in a slump, but I can't get anybody to deal right now. I would probably buy a DD if it weren't for resale value (seems like that is what people are wanting to buy now) and the fact that my wife likes the seating arrangement.
