To the all knowing photo geeks....

I have a 300D now, but just ordered the 350D ($700 from DELL!). I'm looking at getting a new lens and want some advice on a good walk around lens. I have a cheap 70-300 lens that is ok, but I want to get a decent lens for normal shooting.

Any suggestions? Is the 70-200 f4L good for that or should I go with the 50mm f/1.4USM or 85mm f/1.8 USM? I'm mainly looking for everyday stuff as well as pics of the kids.

Thanks,
Tim

I assume you didnt get the stock lens with the camera, the 18-55mm? Its an inexpensive and still okay lens for everyday stuff. I would also recommend getting the 50 mm f/1.8, it is DIRT cheap and provides great quality shots.

I just got Canons 28-105 and I love it so far.
Here's one I took with it at 105mm.(I softened the image but kept the eyes nose and mouth sharp)

Sorry, when you said walk around lense I assumed you meant something basic. Frankly, for the $ the kit lense is pretty good. Your best bet is to visit the forums on dpreview, and specifically the one for the rebel. do a search and you will get a ton of advice.

WRT the other lenses, don't you think the 70 200 is pretty tight at the low end? approx 112 mm does not give you much of a wide angle. I find even the 50mm (~80mm) is pretty tight a lot of the time.
