custom wheels and tires for boat trailer
 

I've noticed a lot of custom wheels on trailers now. What size wheel are they running and what size of low profile tire are on them? Are the tires 8ply? or are they regular car tires. A lot of them look like bigger wheels with low profile tires. Let nme know what you have on yours.

Most of us are running 18's with a low profile tire (toyos or similar). I have seen some 20's and even a set of 22's. Go to your local tire shop and they should be able to tel you what will fit. It is hard to find a wheel with the right offset and a big enough hole in the center for the hub to come through.....

Our 2010 Axis came with 18" X 9" Gear Alloy 711MB wheels w/+10mm offset and Nexen 255/45ZR18 Radials... Luv 'em!

those look sweet!!! Thats the look I want. Do you have to have 8ply tires ? or can you use just regular street radials?

Heres another boat built up by one of the pdxwake.com crew...... with 18s on it.

You would have to test fit 18's with a low profile tire to make them fit under a standard trailer, it can be done. I have 20's on my trailer, as you can see from the pic the bunks are raised at the factory to make a 20" tire fit. The tires are Goodyear RS-A's

My boat came from the factory with 20's wrapped in regular Goodyear Eagle GT2's 275/45/20. The 20's are a tight fit but I haven't had an issue yet.

I didn't want to drop the extra coin at the time, and the tires were still brand new so I went with 14" and kept the factory tires. I really like the look and couldn't argue with the price. $480 shipped for the set.

couple of looks on my 230's. I"m going to stick with a black wheel from now on.

@ Wakejunky, trailer rims come standard at 0 or nuetral offset.

In csae you missed mine I went with 16" wheels and 205/60/16 on mytrailer so that I could still have decent cushion as well as margin for error. The other nice benefit was that the tire diameter was within 17/100ths of an inch of stock.

I would be interested to know the manufacture of some of the trailers pictured here. I have a boatmate trailer and when I called to ask what size rims and what offset the guy said that my trailer was not designed to accept anything but what came on it (FOS)....

With that said, can anybody recommend a wheel and tire size combo for a boatmate trailer that totes a Supra 22SSV? I was thinking about 18"s so that I have some cushion.

I think low pro tires or med pro tires look great. Different strokes for different folks though.... over 18" wheels do start making the tire a bit to low profile and a bit big, but hey. Whatever floats your boat. We all have our opinions and you are paying for it.

What year is your SSV and boatmate trailer? Many of the boats pictured above are sitting on Boatmate trailers. Call Boatmate again or email Owen over there. He can hook you up and tell you what will really fit. THey have some sick wheel selections their now too. You can buy them from them and be sure they will fit.

There may be some since in what you were told about tire/rim choices. The fenders and axles are all different, depending on original tire / wheel sizes. You don't want to know what all had to be done to make the chrome 18'' s fit on that black 230 trailer.

All of the trailers on my 230's have been made by Boatmate, and I couldn't be happier.

Diggs - 06' Supra 22 SSV

I am very happy with my Boatmate trailer in general. The only real issue I have run into is when loading on steep ramps the nose of the boat can potentially dive under the boat buddy.

I was just suprised at the responce when I called because I see so many of their trailers with nice rims on them. The tire/rim combo that came with the boat tows well but the finish on the rims is starting to flake off. The boat and trailer are a 06' model and I have the bullet hole looking rims. I was told that many folks had the same issue with the rims but Boatmate said they were out of warranty (1yr).

Ideally, I would like to go with a slightly lager rim and come down in tire profile to make up the diffrence and keep the same width. I understand that offset and fender clearance are of concern, but there has something out there that fits. I will call Owen with my trailer VIN and see if he can help.

Stuff will fit your trailer as is. With most of what you will find, you will want to just a get a slightly wider fender. Owen can order that for you too and it just fits into its existing location. I would give him a call, but I had wheels and tires on my 06' and I did not even widen the rim. The black Supra (ABOVE) with the beer can on the swim deck is an 06' and I did not get larger fenders on it.

My next swim deck is going to have a cup holder right where that beer can is lol.

Diggs - What size rims and tires are pictured? What brand rims are they? If possible I would perfer to not have to get new fenders. I am guessing they are $200 or more a piece...

wheels are 18's.... can't remember the tire size. i would just take it to your local tire shop on a slow day and have them test some different fits. Really all you can do..

Chris, find a tire diameter calculator online (there are tons) punch in your current tire size to see where you are at. Next determine how much more space you have to work with. You do this by measuring off the center of the hub up to the fender (allow for clearence) and then double it. The calculators typically have an up size option on there that will allow you to punch in some more sizes to determine their diameter. I went with an almost identical diameter as stock but upsized my wheels a couple inches. If you are staying stock with the fenders as I did you are not going to wanna go wider than 8" wheels and between 205-225 on the tire width.

Here are a couple of sizes that sould work"
16"- 205/60/16 = 25.68
17"- 225/55/17 = 26.31
18"- 225/45/18 = 25.97

You're current set up is probably about 26" diameter if you have the standard 14" that most trailers come with. Tires are likely 195-215/75/14

In case you missed it I went with 16" to allow me to run with a little more cushion down the road but it was a very close call on fit. I had to push out the back panel that is carpeted wood.

I have found the information in thread to be very helpful. The idea to use a tire diameter calculator was very helpful. My diameter is right around 26 and I am contacting the rim manufacture to get the exact offset. I also plan to drop by a tire store to see if we can do a test fit (another good idea).
