Hey I think I am going to put a pair of these on my boat. http://www.skylonaudio.com/skylon/productload.asp?product=14
I am not a stereo guy so help me out. I am getting the boat from the factory with 2 Kenwood 720 watt 4ch amps. I am assuming one of these Amps is not really enough to power those speakers. What should I do? Get a bigger amp in place of one of the 720's to power the tower speaks? Suggestions. Thanks in advance to the stereo gurus.....

Everyone raves about the PPI4125, if you can find one. What does skylon reccomend? I know Duane, NVS, sells zapco amps with his.

tyler97217 02-08-2006 7:57 AM

What is the PPI4125? And are these pricey amps? Skylon recommended 900, but did not talk in enough detail on what.... I just don't want to spend a ton...
Thanks for the info

For that kind of money, you could get a higher quality product, one that is manufactured right here in AMERICA.

http://www.wakeside.com/page/W/CTGY/nvs_wakeboard_tower_speaker

tyler97217 02-08-2006 8:33 AM

thanks Joe... have heard good things about the NVS also, but not spending "that kind of money" on them......

jaubrey 02-08-2006 10:50 AM

Joe is that a kawasaki in your profile pic?!

billthom 02-08-2006 11:52 AM

I am trying to figure out what speakers to get as well, so I was curious if you found the Skylons that much better sounding, or just don’t find the NVS worth the money?

$1629 for a set of the Rubicons vs. $1695 for a set of NVS Entity 808 puts them about even in price.

Both maybe overkill for me, so I was also thinking the Skylon 350’s but I don’t know about the look of them from the front. Are the cans all black on the Rubicons?
malibupilot 02-08-2006 12:10 PM

I would be curious too.... how do these compare with the NVS....addictions or even tyrants?

tyler97217 02-08-2006 12:42 PM

Bill,
if you hover over the image on the websit you can see the rearview of the cans. They are black.
I know I have heard great things about the NVS, but I have a good friend with Skylon and have heard great things about them and have been happy with all my other skylon accessorries. That is why I am chosing to go that route. Just need to make sure I am powering it right. I have heard these speakers will blow out plenty of tunage....

talltigeguy 02-08-2006 1:00 PM

Diggs,

To answer your question, the PPI PCX4125 is made by Precision power and when bridged it delivers 500 Watts RMS to each unit. I use it for my Addictions and they are pretty sweet. I found it on Ebay for a very good deal. As a general rule, you can always get stereo equipment better and cheaper on your own than from the factory.

I have never heard the Sklyon Rubicon, or the Defcon for that matter. Is this to replace the Defcons? I can't imagine anything much better than the Addictions.

tyler97217 02-08-2006 1:59 PM

talltigeguy,
Perfect. thanks... they recommend 450 per.
-If I go more than 450, say 500 do I risk blowing anything?
-How hot will that amp run since I run it in a compartment that gets a little warm. Any different than others?
-So could I order one kenwood 720 4 ch with the boat and run the sub and interior speakers with it and then do and aftermarket like the PPI PCX4125 for the tower speakers?

entrustclothing 02-08-2006 2:02 PM

are you getting a new boat?
acurtis_ttu 02-08-2006 2:16 PM

Diggs you should be fine wiht that amp, just adjust the gains accordingly. I've read from posts on here that the PPI4125 runs fairly cool.

tyler97217 02-08-2006 2:16 PM

yeah... trying to keep up with you and keep skiers choice in business. 06 21V Black

entrustclothing 02-08-2006 2:58 PM

lol nice, so the 05 21v wasn't good enough?
tyler97217 02-08-2006 3:05 PM

like i say... gotta keep up with you....
if i recall you just had an 05' and now an 06' too..... hopefully can pull it off every year....

joe_788 02-08-2006 3:29 PM

Jared, yes, that is certainly a Kawasaki in my profile pic. I own two of them. There's no American made competitor for any Japanese motocross bike.

Skylon is an American company that, as far as I can tell, moved their production to China to lower their costs without necessarily lowering the cost to the end user.

wkerat 02-08-2006 3:47 PM

One thing to watch with the rubicons is they are each 4 ohms, so you need a 4 channel you can bridge and get 450x2 or a 2 channel that puts out 450 x2 at 4 ohm. I ordered a planet audio amp for mine. I am going to run a pair of 350's and a single 450.

tyler97217 02-08-2006 9:13 PM

Thanks for the help.
Wkerat... that will be pumping...

entrustclothing 02-09-2006 8:55 AM

actually the new boat is an 05 too its brand new but was a left over, so i guess you still got one up on me
I checked out the Skylon Rubicons at the boat show, and talked to the guys a bunch. The new Rubicon line seems to be really nice. They are phasing out the Defcons, and replacing them with the Rubicons. The Defcons sound awesome, but on the down side, they are 2 ohms. I have the Def 4's and the smoke with my Zapco 750.2 amp. I was looking into going with the 5's, but they no longer make them. I am now looking at either the Rubicon 350's (comparable to the Def 4's), or maybe the 450's. I think they are going to be a great line.

With that being said, I would LOVE to be blasting some of the new NVS stuff. Who knows. When I can afford to drop some change, I am going to look hard at both (and hopefully be able to demo both). Could end up with either one.

Good luck. Both are awesome companies. As far as amps, my vote goes with Zapco.
