Hey i've changed my oil a ton of times but I can't get my hands on my usual oil filter. Anyone know the alternative from the auto parts store?

Fram PH-5 or equivalent. And any of you Fram haters, don't bother. I change too oftern to worry about it and i've never had a problem with one. I know there is better filters, but at 25hr intervals I dont feel the need to spend the xtra $.

It's just a small block Chevy filter. You can use the long or short one. The short version is easier to fit past hoses when mounting. Any brand is OK if you change the oil regularly.

I put a napa gold 7099. This was the most equivelant filter I could find to the stock merc one that the boat came with

Art is correct. The Fram PH-5 I mentioned earlier is the long version. Mine goes in my V210 without much effeort at all, and you always want to choose the bigger filter when you have room. Bigger filter = bigger filtering capability.:)

do not use fram on boats

have seen them rust through and also there pressure relief valve is not always perfect

Been using Fram oil filters on mine and others boats for 15 years. Never had a single failure. I'll keep using em' thank you. Old Chinese proverb says, "rely on what you know, not what you see". I love that one.

im not going to argue with an auto tech, since boat techs deal with 10X more corrosion

So a more accurate statement would of been dont use Fram filters on boats that see alot of salt water? Most on here would never subject their expensive towboats to salt water...

most towboats state do not use in salt

so why would you buy a boat that can not take salt?

"Most towboats state dont use in salt" Just where are you getting this? I've owned three and worked on many, many more, all different brands and have never seen anything in an owners manual or anywhere in the boat stating "no salt use". Nonsense.

PCM and Indmar non-saltwater package is another

it states do not run in salt

the ones with have plastic V drive fittings

its in the owners Manual on the PCM motor

it is the motors saying, not the boat manufacture

I see. So it's not the towboats that state "no salt" as you wrote. It's some engine manufacturers. Thats a bit more believable..

well if you read the owners manuals on boat, like the owner should but 90% do not, it explains engine alignments all the way to what oil and zinc locations on motor

if you have plastic fittings on a boat, i recommend changing them over to brass
