best boats under 14k

I would love a v drive but the only possibility out there seems to be sanger v210 and even that is a far shot. i am hopeing to get a list of the best wake boats, models, and years for the lowest price. (direct drive is fine as long as the wake is killer) Im trying to land 7ns and many mobes i need a bigger and better wake!

joeshmoe 08-26-2010 6:56 PM

well its not going to be an I/O, this should do the trick

wake_upppp 08-26-2010 9:16 PM

Look for a Sanger DLX. Same hull as V210 but a direct drive. Plenty capable. Malibu Response is their core slalom ski hull. With wedge and sacs it can be decent but handles like a tank with wedge down and a closed bow leaves a bit to be desired as far as a wake boat IMHO.

thedrizzle605 08-26-2010 10:29 PM

i just have to ad i hate progressive wakes if i spend 14k i want a wake that will punt me off the top with out haveing to edge like crazy! like i said im making a list of good wake boats so i can shop for a wile.

thedrizzle605 08-26-2010 10:52 PM

im talking hard core wakes worthy of compition, only i dont care if i have to spend all afternoon sacking it out i just want to know what boats will shape up to pro level wakes!

nwarhol1105 08-26-2010 11:43 PM

Nautique 2001
1995+ Malibu Sunsetter
Sport Nautique
MC 205

ralph 08-27-2010 1:49 AM

The V210 will produce the wake you want.

08-27-2010 5:04 AM

e-mail Doug@norriswake.com. i think he has two 2008 Sanger v210's for sale. it won't be under 14K but you won't find a better deal on that year boat. the phone number is 865-494-7844 or you can go to the website. norriswake.com

bruizza 08-27-2010 7:44 AM

Don't know much about this boat but it is a V drive and a Nautique which leads me to believe if you sac it out you will have a large wake.

http://www.onlyinboards.com/Details.aspx?ID=820253

thedrizzle605 08-27-2010 8:27 AM

sport nautique or super sport nautique what years and how do they compair to eachother?

and how well can the 2001 nautiques stack up to these other two? will the wake always be lacking in comparison?

seth 08-27-2010 8:53 AM

1995-2006 all super sport 210's and super air 210's are the same hull, and you can get straight punted off that wake. There are older super sports out there in the 14k range, you just have to be patient and keep looking for them. The sport nautique wake is somewhat similar but nothing really compares to the 210. Based on your above comments, the only boat you want is a 210.

polarbill 08-27-2010 9:24 AM

In order of what will put out the best wake:
1)Any Nautique Super Sport
2)Any Sanger V210
3)Supra Sunsport or Marauder(get 93 or newer, round windshield, if you want all fiberglass boat)
4)Malibu Sunsetter(94 or newer I think is the same hull as the VLX up to 2004)
5)Sport Nautique(I think any up to the 2000's were the same hull)
6)Sanger DLX or SangAir(same boat, any year)
7)Hydrodyne Gransport open bow(any year)
8)Natuqie 2001(82-89)

08-27-2010 10:13 AM

if you're patient you can find a 95-97 Super Sport for $14-$16k. That is the only way to go IMO.

08-27-2010 10:15 AM

oh, and look into the MC 205 and 205V. You can likely find a DD 205 in that price range. The 205V may be a bit more. It's also a very good option.

PictureMeRollin 08-27-2010 10:18 AM

Sanger DLX and V210 have the same hull so same wake with ballast.

Forgot those. A 205V will be hard to find but a regular 205 should be pretty easy. The only think that sucks about them is they are small and have virtually no storage.

You may also be able to find a 96-99 or so sunsetter VLX which would be a great option.

bmartin 08-27-2010 10:37 AM

Sport Nautiques and MC205s are the go to models but a V will be tough under $14K. You may be able to find a V in a Moomba Outback or Centurion Eclipse / Elite and those will kick up a decent wake. The Centswakes are like the vintage SAN vert shape but are touchy with weight placement.

Tloud 08-27-2010 1:40 PM

anybody know anything about the supra mariah? I found some older ones like 88 through early 90s for pretty cheap. Would these be a good wakeboat if a tower and ballasts were added?

I don't think they are all that good. They are kind of low profile compared to the Sunsport and Saltaire. The hull you really want for boarding is the Sunsport. I don't think it is just because of the sunsport being deeper but somehow it has a better hull for producing a wake I think.

bill_airjunky 08-27-2010 2:08 PM

Yea, Supra had a couple of slalom boats that have a really low transom.... Comp, TS, TS6M, etc.. Guys are still weighting them & getting a descent wake from the boat. But it makes for a tense time on the water when your rub rails are in the water & a surf boat cruises by & sends you a wave. Better be on the ball & get that boat turned around & setup to hit that wave right or the Supra will be swamped in a hurry.

thedrizzle605 08-27-2010 8:07 PM

thanks everyone! those are all good options i think i know what to look out for now but just one more question. whitch wake can you take tricks bigger with sanger v 210, super sport nautique, or 96 and newer mastercraft 205?

formfunction 08-28-2010 11:27 AM

You people are greatly underestimating the 2001.I would put mine up to the pepsi challenge any day of the week.

I owned both a SN2001 and a Sanger V210 together, I bought the SN as a project boat for something to play around with. We used to run around 1700 pounds in the SN so have experienced that wake fully loaded. The SN is a great little boat with a very poppy good sized wake but the wake lacks a lot mass compared to a boat like the V210/SAN/205V. The wake is a lot more twitchy and you are always in danger of busting the lip out when you ride longer rope lengths and charge hard. The table width between the wakes is also very narrow but the wake doesn't have the mass to ride any longer than 80ft line. Don't get me wrong I loved that little boat but the wake it produces is VERY different to wake is considered a "pro style" wake these days.

Mike the boat with the biggest usable wake potential IMO is the 205V it is the most mellow of the three (V210 SAN210 205V) and can be built in to the biggest most solid well shaped mass of water BUT to really max this wake out you need 3500+ pounds of ballast. The SAN210 can get bigger but is too steep to really ride with any consistency. The V210 is the most limited due to the hull depth but you can get a very substantial well shaped everyday wake without having to really slam them down too much. Personally I would look at other aspects of the boat to make your purchasing decision (condition/price/availability) rather than wake performance, these three boats can all produce the wake you are looking for.

The attached wake pic is a V210 with around 2200 pounds @ 23mpg & 80ft rope length. I am 6ft tall for reference.

thedrizzle605 08-28-2010 4:31 PM

Thanks im going to keep trying for a sanger! my lake is pritty calm and im use to driving a boat with a low side rail. I just missed a 1999 going for 12000! I flew out to cali last week to check it out and he had just sold it to someone the same day. ow well thanks for all the help!

formfunction 08-28-2010 7:22 PM

1700 hundred pounds is not fully loaded and a shortage of weight in the bow will do exactly what you described.Like I said before we dialed my boat and at 19.5 feet there is not a better boat.
When you jump up to the 20.5 range there is a few boats that are top notch sanger being on the top of my list and the larger open bow is much more comfortable.
To me the 205 comes to life somewhere around 2500 to 3000 pounds and can be a bear to drive at that weight along with high fuel cost would steer me away.
So if it was me the sanger would be my first choice unless you can find a old super sport.

beleza 08-28-2010 10:01 PM

If you could come up with a bit more cash... or work him down a bit on the price, this boat would be perrrrfect. Nice Super Sport with low hours. The guy emailed me a bunch of pics and the boat seems very clean. Thought about driving myself to buy it, but could'nt talk the wife into it...

buy my boat for 9000 obo! 86 ski nautique with the rare 454 chevy big block. Load it up with 2000lbs of ballast/people and watch this 19 foot boat just laugh at that weight. Fully automatic ballast system! Pump in 1500 lbs of ballast in under 9 minutes using almost no battery power! HEI performance distributor (advanced electronic ignition)

mike2001 08-29-2010 5:58 PM

How does the wake on a 91-93 Nautique Excel compare to the others listed in this thread? How much weight does it take to make it nice. Seems like one of the best v-drive options in this price range if the wake is right.

thedrizzle605 08-29-2010 6:36 PM

so wen you edge in agressivley behind a 2001 will the wake wash out a bit since its sutch a narow beam? is it stable ?

beleza 08-29-2010 9:16 PM

The wake will stay clean on the side you are hitting on the 2001. The opposite wake might wash out a bit cuz you are pulling the boat. Whatever wake you hit will stay clean if the weight is properly distributed in the boat.

seth 08-29-2010 9:50 PM

dude jump on that super sport, that thing is gangster.

thedrizzle605 08-29-2010 9:54 PM

yea but wont it become more rounded.i know this will happenin any boat but wont it happen in the 2001 more than others?

beleza 08-29-2010 11:09 PM

More rounded? My 2001 wake stayed pretty solid and vert. It definitely has side to side sway if the rider cuts out hard, but that because it's a small narrow boat.

tride 08-30-2010 12:31 PM

Mike,
I have a 1986 Supra Sunsport I'll sell you,
Tower, Heater, Perfect pass, auto ballast.
I'm in Northern Michigan, Da U.P.

thedrizzle605 08-31-2010 5:21 PM

so how is the wake on those 86 sunsports?

thedrizzle605 08-31-2010 5:25 PM

supra

It will have wood stringers which could be rotten and it's a huge deal to replace them. I've never been in the market for a wood stringer boat so I couldn't tell you how to evaluate whether or not they're rotten.

mattgettel 09-01-2010 6:41 AM

one way to check if the stringers are wooden is to tighten a couple of the bolts on the engine mount. if it tightens you know the stringers are not shot. if it just spins and spins you can be assured they are toast and you dont want the boat. Even if the bolts do tighten you don't know that the stringers are good but at least you know they are good where the motor mounts. I own a 1990 sunsport and the stringers are solid as new. This boat was stored in a climate controlled building for nearly all of its life. Remember that just because it is older doesn't mean the stringers are shot but there is always a chance.

Tloud 09-01-2010 11:18 AM

I found a Supra Conbrio for pretty dirt cheap. Anybody know anything about these?

duffymahoney 09-01-2010 11:20 AM

Bayliner Ski Challenger or Wake Challenger. Good true v-drives for less then 12k usually. Mine had 1500 pounds of ballast and threw a sick wake.

spiff454 09-01-2010 3:24 PM

I have a sweet 98 air Nautique for 15k. if you are interested. Colors are Black and grey.

Nice boat, but $16k is waaay steep. I would offer him like $10k max. For $16k that 97 Super Sport is the best buy.

I agree that 16k is way high on that boat. It isn't worth more than 12k.

wakemikey 09-02-2010 3:42 PM

Older Supras you only want the SunSport, or Marauder (closed bow), or the 24' Saltare or Pirata (closed bow). All other as water ski boats.

Tloud 09-02-2010 4:03 PM

I was looking at the bayliner challenger series and havent been able to find them anywhere. Actually the first time i saw one was a couple weeks ago up at an auto auction that i go to for work, but it was the ski challenger direct drive. But I've only heard good things about the v-drives from these. it'd be sick if you could find one

Tloud 09-02-2010 4:31 PM

those arent bad but you gotta find the wake challenger v-drive i think they started making in 97 or 98..

e_rock32 09-02-2010 5:10 PM

I've got a 95 sport nautique (first make in 93)... we put a little over 2000 in the back, 800 up front and about 300 in the locker. Got the prop with the smaller pitch and ride at 75' back and the wake is really nice. It gets pretty crowded in the boat, but the sides are pretty wide to walk on and with the effort the wake is one of the better wakes I've rode. I'm trying to get 7's and mobes too, I just haven't landed any yet. If you want space, I would suggest a super sport nautique (first make in 95), or there is also the malibu sunsetter vlx (first make in 96) or the mastercraft 205v /x-star (first make in 98).

id also like some more info on these boats

jon4pres 09-04-2010 4:14 PM

I have never seen an excel but considered buying one when I was looking for my current boat.

If I remember right . . .

The consensus was that the boat had a deeper V which made the boat lack that signature hard kicky nautique wake.

tre 09-04-2010 5:33 PM

Take the advice about the Sanger V210. I rode behind one for a few days last month and the wake with the stock 1500lb ballast and 6 people in the boat was great. We rode about 22Mph at 75 feet and the wake really threw you up. I had great pop off that wake. It was every bit as good as any of the top boats I've been behind.

but what are the general wake characteristics? is it a decent buy?

mike2001 09-06-2010 1:47 PM

Wake up- from what I've read, it is the same as a barefoot nautique hull, which means it'd probably take a lot more weight to get a decent wake

Some pictures of my ski challenger V-drive. I had a bow sac, ski locker sac and 450s in each locker. All pumps on switches with a decent stereo and perfect pass all for under 14k. Such a fun boat. It's wakeboard wake is similar to an older xstar.

Tloud 09-06-2010 7:17 PM
