Verizon iPhone? Droid X? or ??

Well it’s time to upgrade the cell phone. I’m currently on Verizon and I’m staying with them. And now they just announced that the iPhone4 is coming to Verizon in February, here’s my questions to you all. Should I wait and get or is it not worth the wait and instead just get the Droid X or should I wait until the new 4g LTE phones come out like the HTC Thunderbolt?

guido 01-11-2011 10:19 AM

I'll be watching this one. I was going to go I-phone, but really want a phone that will play flash.

Luker 01-11-2011 10:47 AM

I heard Froyo 2.2 for android will be flash capable... I've got the monster Dell Streak (Android) and want flash sooooooo bad. How the F has nobody created a flash cable phone yet??????????????????????

phatboypimp 01-11-2011 10:51 AM

I am in a similar situation. I like what I have seen from Droid but the battery life is horrible particularly on the Moto phones. I am staying with Verizon, but more than likely my question is do I wait for the iPhone 5 or do I jump in with the iPhone 4 for now. I use my phone as a phone a lot and don't like the batttery life issues on most of the droids, particularly coming from a blackberry.

Flash is not a huge concern anymore, there are now apps in the appstore that display flash for the iphone and there will soon be native support for flash with iOS.

dabell 01-11-2011 11:55 AM

If you can wait for the Thunderbolt from HTC, then that would be good.

Yes, Verizon has a great LTE phone lineup (dual core processors are also in that line up ;)). The iPhone 4 will not use the LTE network until maybe the iPhone 5 is release.

I have the HTC Evo and would highly suggest Android over Apple.

Flash isn't that big a deal to me. Apple has started its death knell and everyone is moving away from it as fast as their developers and budgets allow.

To me the best part of the iPhone is the solid Exchange synching and the amazing screen and battery life. I have spent quite a bit of time with my gf's droid incredible and the screen/interface pale in comparison to the iphone - and it eats batteries. We just spent a week in NYC and she had to use our portable charger 2x a day - I used it twice the whole time we were there. That being said - she got a signal just about everywhere and I was struggling to pass data on a number of occasions. That, plus the ability to actually make a phone call in North Berkeley are the reasons I am interested in getting back to verizon. Just not sure I want to pick up a couple new iphone 4s four months before the next revision comes out... So I am likely to hold out and see how the LTE droid phones and windows 7 phones pan out.

Theres some awsome phones on the way. Motorola has dual core processors and 1gb RAM on the way ( the first phone with all this will be with AT&T). Samsung too should have a 2GB processor very soon.

brettw 01-11-2011 1:20 PM

I would just get whatever you like the most right now. If you're waiting for the next best phone/electronic device, you'll have a reason to wait about every 6 months.

Riteride 01-11-2011 1:26 PM

just got the droid X and i like it better then the I phone! The battery life is fine as long as you close your apps and dont have 30 things running at the same time. Talked to the verizon people and there will be a couple things that the i phone will not do on verizons network because it is exclusive for ATT!

phatboypimp 01-11-2011 1:57 PM

From what I have read, the only difference between the iPhone on AT&T and Verizon is that AT&T you can surf while on the phone. The iOS on Verizon will be enabled for hotspotting (which may come quickly to AT&T).

HUH? Froyo has been out since late August along with Flash. Incidentally, I have mine set to manual download as the Flash can slow you way down while surfing.

this should answer some of your questions; http://bit.ly/h79AVn

my wife has the droid x and i havent noticed any battery issues either. i think she charges it at night while she is sleeping.

wakereviews 01-12-2011 6:30 AM

there's apps you can get for the droid that will help your battery life by killing programs that run in the background when the phone is locked. I used to only get 3-4 hours of battery life using the phone, now it can go about 36 hours... which still sucks compared to my old Blackberry Curve but it's better than it was.

guido 01-12-2011 10:46 AM

This is my problem.... why get away from my Blackberry? I'd like something with touchscreen and a little better internet capability (bigger screen, faster, etc), but the Blackberry still works well. Even after 3 years. It's rock solid, doesn't break and only needs a charge once a week. I'd really like flash so I could check traffic cameras on my way to the sierras, but that's my main motivation. I also like the idea of getting my music onto my phone to eliminate carrying my i-pod with me all the time.

Decisions, decisions.

hatepain 01-12-2011 11:11 AM

Evan, whenever I fiddle with my wifes BB I always ask her why she still has that thing. Compared to a well opporuting Android its a joke. If all you want is email, text, phone calls and Pandora its fine but there is so much more out there.

One my favorites:

Droid X with 2.2 is better than porn. Actually, it plays porn... in flash! Or so I've heard...
I switched from BB in August and while the first few days were awkward, it really does everything I want. I can even remote into our work server and rifle through any program, which is as close to a pocket size laptop as it gets. Fantastic features and a ton of great aps. The resolution isn't quite an i-phone but I'm fine with it.
Evan - I use it often to check webcams before heading up 80. Sweeeet
I had my mp3 collection on it for a long time but listen to Pandora more than anything now. Kind of depressing, considering how much time I have invested in 15k songs. You won't regret it!

i LOVE my droid X!!!!

polarbill 01-13-2011 3:22 PM

I have a droid 2 with froyo and love it. I have had zero issues. I may have to upgrade to an X though soon.

ok the samsung facsinate and droid x are bother better than the iphone i had a verizon seller tell me from experience the x is just a big droid 1 and the facsinate is the best

dabell 01-14-2011 6:48 AM

The only problem with the Moto Atrix 4G is that it's on AT&T's network. I like the whole idea of what the phone has to offer but AT&T is the killer on this deal. But, the OP was also looking into Verizon also. :D

jstewart319 01-14-2011 6:59 AM

Well I decided to get the Droid X, could not wait for the 4g phones to come out and the iPhone just did not appeal to me since it is no different than the AT&T version, and with the possibility of Verizon getting rid of upgrade discount I had to pull the trigger. The wife got the Samsung Fascinate so I could not get the same phone as her; it is a sweet phone though. I’m still learning how to use the Droid X and so far I’m really likening it.

If anyone has tips on how to conserve battery life please share or share the best apps that you use.

dabell 01-14-2011 11:18 AM

jake,

That Fascinate will be a good phone for your wife. I have a friend that has one and he loves it.

The other issue with battery life for your phone. I can not help you out directly but can point you to some forums that will definitely help you out now, tomorrow, and then the future. They are:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=687
http://forum.androidcentral.com/motorola-droid-x/

Both forums are good. The xda-developers will definitely be more of the programmers guide to stuff. While Android Central will be more catered towards the "normal" user.

Good luck and don't hesitate to ask questions. You will definitely like the Android OS...
