I started trying tantrums about a month ago. I can get all the way around but seem to always land with all my weight on my back foot and then the handle rips out of my hand. Granite I don't have a tower and my friends tell me I'm flipping really fast. Just wonderin if this had anything to do with my problems or if anybody had any tips.

(Message edited by ridemyzamboni on September 30, 2005)

Timmay, are you riding all the way to the top of the wake before you square up to let it trip you? If you don't, you'll throw it in the trough and trip too early, causing you to flip very fast. Make sure you're waiting till the last second to square up.

Like Mike said, wait for the pop off the wake then flip back. I was doing the same thing. once i pulled the handle in and waited for the pop i was landing them 75% of the time. I'm still perfecting it though

Timmay-
I used to do the exact same thing you are doing. Like mentioned earlier it is very important to

1) Wait until the top of the wake to start the back flip. If I leave too early I will usualy throw it shallow and under rotate, hurting the front of my ankles.
2) Keep the handle in. This will give you a 'buffer' when you land. It took me atleast a year to realize that handle control is critical in almost every trick you will learn on a wakeboard.

But one other thing I would do is look over my back shoulder to spot my landing. This would cause me to get a little of axis and the board would get behind me, which would cause me to land tail heavy. I didn't realize I was doing this until I saw it in a picture. I thought I was looking straight back and leaving square - boy was I wrong.

Hope that helps

and check out the instructionals available on this site:

straight tantrum: http://www.wakeworld.com/Tricklist/TrickTip006.asp

indy tantrum (from 'the book'):
http://www.wakeworld.com/Tricklist/TrickTip028.asp

leaving early is one of the most common mistakes with the tantrum. also if you can, try not to get into the bad habit of throwing your head and shoulders back. stand tall and then kick your feet up - much better for progressing the trick later.

I havent tried one yet
might try in the morning!
some have told me to turn the trailing edge of the board towards the wake when I reach the bottom of the wake
this will send me backwards up the wake......
sounds harder than what the video shows

what does anyone here think of that?

I have been trying tantrums for about two months and was wondering if it is possible to practice getting the pop by just squaring up at the top of the wake and jumping straight up to help with timing? Sorda like doing a tantrum without the flip.

deepstructure 10-05-2005 3:46 PM

damned - i think it would be difficult to do. the whole point of the trip flip edge is to do just that (as in the words of the immortal fenster), "flip ya, flip ya for real."

cliff - you don't need to completely turn the back edge parallel to the wake. all you need to do is back off your edge and stand tall. you still leave the wake with your board basically travelling in the same direction, especially if you're not grabbing the trick.

watch the examples given above - you'll easily see how they simply back off the hard edge and stand up.

Thanks
doing it the other way sounded painful!

Chris is wrong here. If you just let off your edge and do not turn parallel you will probably do a Frantrum, which is a mix between a Tantum and a HS Front Flip. You will recognize this by feeling an off axis rotation, kind of like unwillingly skipping a bit towards the nose of your board and landing with more weight on your front foot. I know because I used to do'em this way for a while before correcting my mistake by looking for the shore I was coming from right before the take off. This makes the shoulders parallel to the wake which results in a clean backflipping motion if you get the pop right (which is an essential part of the trick). The rotation should happen quite smoothly and not too fast (unless you really tuck by pulling your knees into your upper body for an indy grab).

Here's an instructional to the trick that I posted before a while, hope it helps:

Just keep a few things in mind when trying Tantrums: Speed is live! Try to get a lot of air!!! If you don't get the right pop, the crashes can get pretty brutal. Do not take off too early! You'll jump flat and crash badly. Allright, let's go then. Cut out as wide as you can on your toeside (it helps when you cut out hard to get outside further). Wait for like one second and concentrate on your cut towards the wake while you slowly put your board on the heelside edge. Take a slightly seated position as you're starting your cut. Bend your knees further into a fully seated position during your cut. Cut in agressively digging your heelside edge in really deep for building LOTS of speed towards the wake. As you reach the wake, let off your edge, square up your shoulders and look towards the shore you came from (practice this many times without the final takeoff before you actually try the trick - just to get a better feel for the right timing). Let the momentum carry you up the wake. Let go with your back hand and put your lead hand with the handle somewhere near your lead shoulder. At the top of the wake, STRAIGHTEN YOUR LEGS to get maximum pop. Don't rush the takeoff! This, along with a good amount of speed, is key to achieve this trick! You want to jump up, not out! As you take off, tilt your head slightly backwards towards the shore you're heading. If you time all this correctly (sounds more complicated than it actually is), you should receive the pop you'll need to come all the way around on the flip. You don't have to worry too much about the rotation, it happens naturally when you set the right cut and take off correctly. The wake will just kick you up in the air and over, and gravity will let the board fall under you for the landing. Landing is the easier part of the trick. I can even close my eyes at the takeoff and feel the landing. It's a good idea to visualize the trick by watching instructionals like "Waketricks" or "The Book". It helps to have a big wake when learning this trick, it will make it so much easier.

And again, don't rush the take off! Take off from the top of the wake. Good luck
sorry to jump in on your thread....

i've been trying tantrums for a while now too. can seem to land them though. I think im not taking off from the wake correctly. I seem to get allot of slack in the rope in mid air, when i land the handle gets riped straight from my hands.

i think from the vid i'm squareing up to the wake... however because the wake is at an angle to the boat/rope im not rotating around the rope. any advise/help would be great. cheers..

heres a link to a vid.
http://www.wakepics.com/view_single.php?medid=17522
