need help on how to dock start

derek23 11-21-2007 11:46 AM

Stand at the edge of the dock. be ready, have the boat idle out then when the rope is about to be tight the driver should take off just like a deep water start and you should jump into the water

It is pretty easy--happens a lot slower than you might think. Don't be afraid, just do it---like Derek said. Make sure you look up at the boat, not down at the water. Good luck!

polarbill 11-21-2007 3:38 PM

that is awesome. I have never tried it but I bet that is how it would happen

nickdakoolkat 11-21-2007 3:51 PM

You might want to try a sit down dock start first just to get the feel for when you should jump.

downfortheride 11-21-2007 4:09 PM

Ya you can try and sit down !
http://youtube.com/watch?v=hFc0a-fxzEk&feature=related

my main problem when i was learning was that i would let the boat pull me over.
what helps me is that i say go, wait for the driver to react, and once i see the boat start to move then ill jump in the water. once you hit the water, let yourself sink a little bit, and lean back and hydroplane yourself out.
the leaning back part is key, but dont hit your head on the dock!

dlwsrider 11-21-2007 6:28 PM

keep the handle low, so that when the boat pulls you, you dont get yanked over and catch your edge.

11-21-2007 10:26 PM

Sit on the docks edge to get the feel of the pull and line tension. Try that a few sets in a row, it will get your timming with the driver as well. When your ready try it on the dock, squat get ready for the tension and bunny hop on to the water when the line gets tight. You can jump into a board slide but that can be tricky so angle the board a lot more towards the boat. You may miss it a few times and nose dive right in or catch your nose becasue your not jumping with both feet onto the water. When you do stomp it pump your fist in the air and throw the handle.

I just realize 2 people already suggested to sit, it worked for me.

needwake 11-22-2007 6:27 AM

Don't have the driver take off too fast!! You don't need much speed to stay above the water.

Oh, and practice makes perfect:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=sB2QSQIDYXg&feature=related\

goatroper222000 11-22-2007 6:38 AM

i found if you jump in the water with the board in the same position as it would be in a deep water start( sideways) it is alot easier. then just lean back and plain off.

rnopr8 11-24-2007 10:34 AM

just jump and lean back!!!

todd... its clips like that guy that make everyone feel good ok maybe not him. I always thought dock starts where easier then deep water starts but this thread is proving that thought wrong.

she is rippeedd

Todd....that's the funniest video I've seen in months.

Anybody here ever try a dock start on a slalom? That'll really get your blood going. If you can just keep your shoulders in socket than you've done well.

wakerider111 11-25-2007 5:14 PM

my uncle and aunt start (SLALOM) from a lawn chair set in 1-2 feet of water... and they are older people too, since my aunt is my mom's oldest sister, married by the time she was born practically.

the chair in shallow water would work wonders for wakeboarding too i bet... especially for those individuals who just don't get the deep water start no matter what you do. i think once anyone gets up, at least once, they will get the feel of it then be able to start anyway they want... almost...

needwake 11-26-2007 11:36 AM

We used to dock start everytime we slalom. I find it is actually less tiring than a deep water start. However with two feet in the bindings now we have to do a deepwater start.
