Good Mechanic in the Houston Area?
 

I am looking for recommendations on a good Marine mechanic shop in the Houston area. I used Alvin Marine a couple of times with my previous boat but was not impressed with how they take care of their customers boats.

Right now I want to get a closed cooling system installed in my '06 Tige 22VE. I rode up to Texas Tige Marine to set up an install and the salesmen kept telling me I really don't need it if I flush the boat after every use. I told him I do flush it but I would rather the brackish water we ski in not enter the engine. He just kept telling me I really didn’t need it until he finally pulled a price of $2800.00 to $3000.00 which I think is about $1000.00 too much.

I was thinking about giving Houston Watersports Complex(HWC) a call to see if they could help me out. Any suggestions??

I've heard good things about HWC and they are in your area so that's a plus. Also try James at Water Junkies 832 744 3860, thats a bit of drive for you tho.
Maybe there was some miscommunication. You dont need to flush the closed loop (coolant) side, but you should flush the raw water side for sure.

If you didn't talk to Brandon at Texas Tige the first time you should call back and ask for him. Brandon is the owner and I'm sure he will shoot you straight. There are several Tige boats on the SBR which he services so I would really trust his opinion. If you think the price is $1000 too high, just tell him and see what he can do. They have to make money on it if it is going to tie up time in their shop but I'm sure he will do whatever he can to get the price down for you and make you happy.

His lead mechanic worked for PCM for many years and from what I've heard he wrote a lot of the PCM service manual. It's in their best interest to take care of you and make sure you are happy with your Tige so that when you get ready for a new boat you'll go with Tige again.

Water junkies does a good job from what I hear. Stay far away from HWC they put a riser gasket wrong on my buddies boat and hydrolocked the motor and wouldnt pay to fix it. He is 8k in the hole now.

I'd pass on HWC based on my experience with them, I sent you a PM detailing my thoughts on HWC instead of bashing on them here.

I contemplated closed cooling as well, I bought my Tige from Brandon, he told me it would be $2800 same as you, in the end I chose to not install it. I do use my boat in brackish water some of the time and due diligently fush my engine and no problems.
