how many of you where helmets when riding? i have this crash that knocked some daylight out of me here..<font face="Verdana" color="#999999" size="1"><br/><a href="<a href="http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&amp;videoid=1 4005702" target="_blank">http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&amp;videoid=1 4005702</a>">Zach uploaded this for me</a><br/><object><param><param><param><embed></embed></object><br/><a href="<a href="http://www.myspace.com/jake586" target="_blank">http://www.myspace.com/jake586</a>">Jake</a>*|*<a href="<a href="http://vids.myspace.com" target="_blank">http://vids.myspace.com</a>">MySpace Video</a></font> <BR> <BR> <BR> <BR>and i was just wondering how many people where them?

norbiv 12-12-2009 7:46 PM

I wear em when I shred railz. most of the times. and at all the cables its a must. and most rail parks with an insurance. when Im just riding behind the boat I find it useless. just puts extra weight on your neck and the strap can hurt if you fall wierd. especially with fast speed

mxjake720 12-12-2009 7:53 PM

i have knocked my head around a few times and it hurt pretty darn bad.

wake_upppp 12-12-2009 8:29 PM

When fitted corectly it helps a ton behind the boat. Many bell ringers without and none in three seasons with. We also ride the Dirty D so debris is another great reason to wear one. I like the Pro Tec Ace Wake myself but there are other good ones. Fit is crucial! It helps in the confidence department too.

rallyart 12-12-2009 8:44 PM

I like faceplants more with my helmet on than I did before I got one. Now, at my skill level my only invert is after I do a faceplant. I can do a couple other things but I've got the faceplant nailed and I'm thinking it would be nice to have a face shield too.

mxjake720 12-12-2009 9:09 PM

yeah thats why i was wondering because the faceplants seem to get the best of me

hawkeye7708 12-12-2009 10:17 PM

Yeah, I wear mine behind the boat. I really like the ear-flaps for protecting against blowing out the ear drum on smacks. I also noticed, at least for me, that the impacts when I'd hit hard didn't seem to hurt anywhere near as bad. I rock mine 100% of the time.

mtownrydr 12-13-2009 1:48 AM

Helmets behind the boat are for women.

hawkeye7708 12-13-2009 7:18 AM

^^ Or people with more steezy profile pics than you. <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/biggrin.gif" border=0>

mxjake720 12-13-2009 7:59 AM

also when i try to ride switch...i end up switching back around and then slamming my head into the water.

evadehickman 12-13-2009 11:05 AM

+1 on blown eardrum - started wearing one after I had to spend two weeks off the water due to rupture after bad landing. Also helps reduce that bell ring effect. All in all, it removes two blocks to progression for me.

mtownrydr 12-13-2009 11:06 AM

Hey that is as steezy as i get behind an unweighted larson. Sorry it wasnt up to your standards of steeze.

mxjake720 12-13-2009 11:28 AM

yeah i think i shall go buy one.

ottog1979 12-13-2009 11:49 AM

For the ear protection, I just picked up one of these... <BR> <BR><a href="http://www.shredready.com/products/standardfc.html" target="_blank">http://www.shredready.com/products/standardfc.html</a>

mtownrydr 12-13-2009 11:59 AM

Nevermind updated the pic for ya...I guess I wear helmets sometimes.

hawkeye7708 12-13-2009 1:12 PM

Evan, had to come up with something against the "helmets for women" statement lol

bendow 12-13-2009 3:25 PM

I wear one, because you have to at the cable. Don't see a point behind a boat. I've still got concussions with a helmet on...

mxjake720 12-13-2009 5:08 PM

i don't think theres a cable park in michigan and can anybody reccommend a good helmet?

hawkeye7708 12-13-2009 5:24 PM

I've had a really good experience using BERN helmets, but there seems to be a really big following for Shred Ready helmets on here.

sidekicknicholas 12-13-2009 5:26 PM

+1 bern <BR>i never use one wake riding but at the cable/rail parks...yes

wake_upppp 12-13-2009 6:11 PM

"I've still got concussions with a helmet on" ...and people still die behind air bags with seat belts on. It's a percentage game. And the percentages are far in your favor if you use the safety equipment in any risky situation, period. Debate on...

hawkeye7708 12-13-2009 6:30 PM

Yeah, it's definitely a two camp debate. Cushion vs. None. Surface area in relation to cranium deceleration, added weight contributing to more energy upon impact, there's lots of ways to look at it. Lots of the guys in my crew, including myself, have found that we prefer riding with the helmets. I definitely think it's a personal choice on that one.

spearing 12-14-2009 6:08 AM

Any rail, cable or winch i wear a helmet. If i am riding the wake only I go commando ok i throw some sun butter on my head.

12-16-2009 8:35 AM

Helmet or not to helment ? <BR>My help with blowing eardrums but as far a a good KO i don't think so. Helment on rails a must ... Behind the boat not for me....Tried it once and it seemed to hurt more than it helped..

bmartin 12-16-2009 8:57 AM

If you are in a Shredtown video, a helmet might be a good idea. <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/wink.gif" border=0> Straight wake riding is debatable and has been roundly debated around here. Ben's post sums up the heart of the issues.

waterdork88 12-16-2009 12:33 PM

Obstacles- Yes, always <BR> <BR>Wake- I personally don't like them. I haven't had a concussion until I started using one and never had one since. Concussions in the water are not fun. <BR> <BR>But I can understand if you're worried about busted eardrums or if you're worried about the board hitting you. I've had the board hit me in the head and thats not fun either... but for me it seems like an extremely small chance of happening vs. a concussion with a helmet

mike3500 12-16-2009 4:28 PM

yes

gkd 12-16-2009 9:14 PM

Bern or Pro-tec? <BR>any good or bad pointers on either?

hawkeye7708 12-17-2009 5:29 AM

GKD, <BR>I've used both before, and they definitely both do an excellent job. If you've got a chance to, try both on before you buy. I've had excellent experience using BERN helmets, in the past, so that's the helmet I ride. When this helmet bites the dust, I'll be coming back to BERN. BERN: definitely comfortable, fit well, the ear guards are very nice and soft, and the chin strap is pretty easily adjustable.

xbones 12-17-2009 1:08 PM

I don't want to get sucked into the same stupid back and forth that ensued the last time this topic was discussed... but if you're going to wear a helmet when riding boat... at least make it a Shred Ready.... cuz they are DOPE ;)

gkd 12-17-2009 2:13 PM

Ben, <BR>Thanks for the help. <BR>Bern offer a choice of Brock or EPS foam. <BR>What's your thoughts there?

hawkeye7708 12-17-2009 2:34 PM

Brock is definitely a softer foam that'll conform better to your head. EPS is a harder foam, I believe a bike helmet is an EPS style foam. Pretty hard stuff. I'd go Brock for sure.

gkd 12-17-2009 2:54 PM

I've been wearing a Pro-Tec (that I hired) at cable, not that keen with them. I tried on a "Two Face" and an "Ace Wake" at the pro shop. They weren't bad. <BR>I'm going to try a few Bern helmets on today. <BR>Cheers Ben.
