New World Record set in Arizona.
 
I set the record for the highest trick on a hydrofoil (no kite) this past weekend. 63 frames. Measured by counting the frames of a 30 frames per second clip. Time in the air is 2.1 seconds. 17' 9". 5.402 meters. Enjoy.

It's very hard to know exactly when we leave the water. No matter the ride it's just too hard to tell. That's why hydrofoilers decided to judge "frame zero" to be when the front wing appears from the water. The count stops at the first sign of touchdown.

If you find a clip of a rider going massive on the Internet and are curious you can use a program called Clipgrab to download the video. Then use Quicktime7 to count the frames. Right arrow to go one by one or switch the time to frame and do the math. Be sure to note the frames per second rate. Most sites upload and play at 30 frames per second. That is our counting standard. There is a chance you might come across a 24fps. But it's rare. I film in 60fps and cut the count in half.

After you count the frames a simple math formula can be used to calculate height.
50frames is 1.667 seconds of hang time. 50/30=1.667
Divide the time by 2 because we are measuring the height. 1.667/2=.834
Multiply time (.834s) by gravity's velocity (-9.8m/s squared) .834x-9.8= -8.167. Let's ditch the negative since we are going up ;)
8.167 velocity needs to be averaged. Since we know at the top we are at zero. (8.167+0)/2=4.083
Multiply 4.083 by time (.834s) to find distance up. 4.083x.834=3.406 meters or 11.175 feet
