how do you do airs

08-29-2005 1:20 PM

Hey Corey, there are two basic ways for getting air. The chop hop, is where you'd ride up on the top of the spin and then ollie back down into the trough. That's the easiest. The harder one, but more spectacular looking is what James is doing above. He goes back to where the wake is curling over and then pumps hard towards the boat. After the second pump, he does a hard bottom turn ( when you first start this, you can just try to bring the nose of the board up over the wake). Then just as the board reaches the top of the wake, James ollies off the lip. Now, just one point, this board that James is using has 3.5 inch fins. Most of the skim style boards have smaller fins. These longer fins give this board a bunch of drive and so James can launch himself into the air. The skimmers have a different style, but basically do the same thing pump to the lip and ollie off the top.

Hope that helps.

Hey Mark, you're killing it backside! You know what though? There are a ton of tricks that aren't skate influenced and you have the perfect setup being backside. Try this for me sometime. Ride up the face, do a rocket. Then at the peak, grab your stick with both hands and do a body varial. Would be killer on the Orange Phlem. I wanna see some moves that require tons of drive.

tings00 10-06-2005 2:14 PM

grab your stick? what the?

4sher 10-06-2005 2:22 PM

Great ideas Jeff. At the moment, I'm just trying to keep the board from smacking me too hard when I miss the Shove-it.

10-06-2005 2:31 PM

Blake!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not that stick! I think there are a bunch of tricks that can be done more surf style, rather than skim or skate style. The boards with fins and some drive will allow the development of those. I'll have to get James to try that rocket/varial combo this weekend. Notice I'm not doing 'em?

10-11-2005 10:31 AM

The key to bringing the tail around, like this, is to spin it on the spine.

10-11-2005 10:39 AM

Surfstyle 360 step-by-step. One of the most important steps is to consistently position the board in preparation for spinning. The board is slightly above the transition, edged into the wake, notice the relationship of the nose to the spine. You'll want to try and put the cutting edge of the nose right onto the spine. Also notice that James is dragging his trailing hand, to assist in the rotation.

It's a little hard to see, but the most important aspect of the 360 on a surfstyle board is breaking the fins loose. If you are consistently going out the back, this is more than likely the reason, the fins are still tracking and you aren't spinning, but actually tracking a HUGE circle. It's also hard to see, but notice James' body position, he's shifting weight forward to assist breaking the fins loose.

10-11-2005 10:47 AM

Probably the third most important thing to avoid on the surfstyle 3 is burying the nose after the completion of the spin. You can see the nose is just barely above the surface. You can see that James has shifted his weight back, if you throw a pump just out of the turn it will pull the nose up, avoiding burying it AND will give you a touch of speed to complete the 3.

All done, in this trick, James tried to do back-to-back 3's, so he's getting ready to drag his hand again.

So to recap:
1) rail buried above the transition
2) Start cut and drag trailing hand
3) Break fins loose, lean forward to assist
4) Lean back on the re-entry or start a pump to avoid burying the nose

Hey Hawaj, way back when you asked for a video on how to do airs. It's LOUSY quality and unedited, but I got about a minute of James riding. Nothing HUGE, but he gets some air, a taildrop, floater, 360...misc stuff all nicely linked, at:

http://www.wakepics.com/view_single.php?medid=17417

sweet video. he's really catching some air. That was a quick 360 too. I gotta try one of those boards....

10-19-2005 4:48 AM

Hey Josh. Thanks for the props, I'm hoping that we can get a better vid this weekend, maybe have the sun in the correct position! On the surfstyle 3, when you break the fins loose, it will spin just like on a skimstyle, sometimes quicker because of the extra floatation.

Jeff: Thanx for nice video. It really helps me. Now I know how easy is to make some air But firt I must change my Landlock for somethig smaller. I am looking for something like your board. How works different tails - round, flat or swallow? Actually I would like to build one, it allways ineterseted me to make surfboard so why not to try it with wakesurf.

10-29-2005 6:43 PM

Hey Hawaj, I think James maks it LOOK easy, I struggle with catching air, personally. I'm stoked to hear you're going to build your own board. I like being able to try different design elements. I honestly haven't noticed much difference in the performance of a board, due to it's tail shape. However, theroretically a round or pin tail is supposed to reduce swing weight and allow quicker rail to rail changes. The swallow tail is used on the industry standard fish shape for ocean surfing in small mushy waves. I do blieve I have read somwhere that the design allows for longr rails with a closer release point for the tail. I personally use a square tail because it gives me more surface area on the tail. I ride rear foot heavy and need that extra few CI's. To be honest...of ALL the design elements I've played with, I found that the tail shape had the least impact on the actual ride.

Keep us posted on how your shape comes out!

hawaj 10-30-2005 6:19 PM

Thanx for support Jeff Actually Im stoked with your work and determination to build performance wakesurfboard and with perfomance of your son James too! I was looking around net about a year, checking Shred Stixx models, skimboards and finally then your other post catch my eyes with nice pics of your asym experiment, rotating fins etc. Wow! http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/197429.html?1099675327
I love more that surf feeling than faktory made boards with wakeboard technology.

That was that point I told myself go for it!
But I am not sure with measures of board. I'm 6'3" (195 cm) and weigh around 176.
Probably most importatnt thing is rocker, which parameters should I use? All I know is that boards for small mushy waves has more flat rocker to get more speed. But I really dont know what is too much or not enough? And how about bottom concave and channels? I was checking V bottom of my Landlock, which looks more simple than is, but I really dont know how to create something like it or even concave, its chaning all the way from nose to tail Or should I forgot it and leave it flat?
I downloaded demo of Shape3d software for CAD surf design, but Iam not very friendly with it http://www.shape3d.com/ This thing is great for making templates and for quick changing of parameters.

All I can get here (Czech republic) is this blue/green styrofoam used for construction for isolation. Do you know how thick I need it?
1. Than I probaly cut rocker tamplates from plywood and cut foam with hotwire. I think that I can cut directly clean shape of rocker without an extra foam (like on blanks).
2. cuting outline shape
3. cut board in half and glue some pine plywood stinger (3mm?? I dont know)
4. draw rail lines (dont know which type )
5. shaping top, bottom and rails
6. glassing with 1 layer of 4 oz glass (almost no galssing experience )
7. sanding
8. airbrush design (never worked with airbrush gun )
9. glossing
10. adjusting locks for 3.5 inch side fins
11. try to ride it

What I have is only small flat, no garage or workroom, no tools (xcept drill).
