Cleaning tower

Hey guys...

What do you use to clean the bugs off your tower?

acurtis_ttu 04-23-2010 7:26 AM

I've used bug/tar remover from the loacl auto parts store...works decent.

For the last 3-4 years I put a light coat of silicone spray ( applied with a rag) all over my tower. Nothing really sticks to it anymore. I just wipe bugs off every 2-3 months.

Magic erasure

liljohn 04-23-2010 7:55 AM

Dryer sheets! Do NOT use magic eraser! Magic erasers are sand paper! If you have a realy long haul to make take a can of pam cooking spary and hit the leading edges of your tower before you leave. then when you get to your destination the bugs and gunk will wipe right off. I do this when we make the run from seattle to shata in the summer and it takes 2 minutes to rid the boat of all the bugs.

wakeguru 04-23-2010 8:11 AM

you can run from Seattle all the way to Shasta? sounds like a fun, scenic trip, liljohn.

Flitz ... and Speakersox

cwkoch 04-23-2010 9:20 AM

A wet terry cloth towel takes care of them pretty easily for me....

WakeboardNJ 04-23-2010 9:54 AM

wrap the tower in saran wrap for long drives.

mdaijogo 04-23-2010 10:10 AM

Does anyone use wd-40? That stuff works wonders when I clean up my shifter kart.

Magic Eraser does not damage my tower because its not polished. It works like a charm for me

liljohn 04-23-2010 12:45 PM

David if only i could run that far..lol We make that trip every other year and i wouldnt pass shasta up for anything but powell.

loudontn 04-25-2010 8:58 AM

Sounds crazy but baby oil is really really good for shining the tower up, not sure about removing bugs though. There is also a good cleaner out there called aluma-guard but if you do your research you'll find it's just glorified baby oil.

dru1974 04-25-2010 9:06 AM

I just cleaned mine yesterday and used hot soapy water, but how do i get oxidation off my roswell mirror, new boat and it has tiney specks of oxidation, i am not real happy about it either....:o

razzman 04-25-2010 9:38 AM

As said, terry cloth towel and water and they come right off. I don't even worry about protecting or coating as it does no good anyway. Bugs are on everything since i live in bug central anyway.

wakesurfer08 04-25-2010 1:49 PM

Just a question....What about Mothers aluminum/chrome polish? Would this be ok?

john211 04-25-2010 2:52 PM

Ha! '...bug central...' Yes, some days, the hatch is on, and the bugs win. Here is an old post of mine I recycled for someone else today about where to put a Sirius antenna. I mounted mine on my tower and took pictures of the install. Check out the bugs on the speaker cans! Eek.

Aagain, for me, now, Speakersox.

acurtis_ttu 04-26-2010 7:17 AM

Drew/jeff...my racks/mirror arms looked like crap only after two years. I used the mother's polish and one of their "powerball" drill attachment buffing devices. It worked great. Brought them back to like new.

h2oproaccessories 04-26-2010 10:11 AM

Saturday it stormed here all day..... didnt have anything to do.... so I went and got some bug/tar remover.... worked just fine.

adam4x4 04-26-2010 11:21 AM

i have used glass cleaner. works good for me. just spray it on let it, let it set a few wipes right off

baitkiller 04-26-2010 12:35 PM

For polished aluminum and stainless I use Rupp aluminum protectant. This is made by the outrigger company and works better than anything I have ever used. Pitting is a distant memory. Fish blood doesn't even stick. S Florida salt water doesn't touch it.

wakesurfer08 04-26-2010 4:47 PM

Adam,

Thanks! That is what I was going to do also was use the power ball drill attachment. Glad to see it will do the job just fine. Project for the next couple rain days.
