batteries

i wish the 1dm3 (and all the necessary toys to go with it) was in the budget. since it's no where near it, this will do.

still needing a couple lenses; 70-200 f2.8vr and a 17-55 f2.8. oh, and a pelican case.
|
Nice!

whats the lens in the picture Joe?

10.5 fishy

get a sto-fen diffuser for that flash, yo!
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/257958-REG/Sto_Fen_OMSB5_OM_SB5_Omni_Bounce_for_Nikon.html

NICE

So is the camera gonna be used for work? In other words is part of your job description having a sexy boat, model for you? Just curious...

Scott, the SB800 comes with the diffuser, which is something I almost always use on mine. They sure do make a difference.
|
yes, it's for work. sexy boat, yes. model, hopefully.

first shot w/ the fisheye

I can see that the flash has a diffuser. Both of my Canon flashes have one as well. The Sto-Fen diffuser is still very noticeably better than any Canon or Nikon built-in diffuser. I leave one on my 580ex at all times.

I hate to speak on Joe's behalf, but this camera will be used in place of his old, aging D70. That camera served him well, but he's found that he wants more out of his equipment. So Joe's decided to pick up a camera with higher MP count so that he can fill up his hard drive faster, and with higher resolution images of blurry poopoo.

oh, and get a tripod and remote, you slacker!
|
They come with the diffuser mounted, like in the photo below, along with two light filters. As you can also see they come with the wide angle diffuser built in, and the 5th battery compartment to speed recycle time. It is a pretty nice flash setup. Just turn the camera on before the flash so they sync up correctly, then the camera can do a pretty good job.

Fisheye lens are a trip

The only way to wirelessly trigger a D200 is with pocket wizards and the $120 connecting cable. I bought mine off ebay right after someone sold his D2X, for less, in brand new condition. My pocket wizards Plus II's came from "ahmuay" on ebay for $330 shipped, which is not bad. Don't be like these fools, and over pay like they did for an old product.

FWIW Costco was selling 1 TB HD's for a reasonable cost, but swear I saw one in the store for $3?? something.

i bought 2 x 500gb ext hdd for under $350 about 3 months ago.

i'm not even gonna deal w/ wireless triggers yet. i need to learn how to use this cam first!

Very nice Joe.
|
is the 17-55 and 70-200 on the way? If so you just dropped some serious money. That would be my dream setup. Where do you live again?

nice joe, now u can take even better candids of my girlfriend...hahahaha

a.p., hopefully i can order the 17-55 and the 70-200 before the week's end.

oh, i'm in san diego.

kyle, what, the ones i took weren't good enough???

Joe, you might want to contact Barry Vaught, as you know he is a professional photog and selling his lens. Post is here
|
I think Joe wants the 70-200VR and Barry is selling his 80-200. Same but different. Tell you the truth, after using my 18-200 VR, I definitely believe in the VR.
|
yep, 70-200f2.8vr for me....or nuthin!

i was told that there's a HUGE difference between the 80-200vr and the 70-200vr...like night and day, with the 70-200vr being THAT much better.
|
Peter Chandler, you mean like this? It was linked from the page you linked to... It's the newer version

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?ec=BC-EC12234-ProdID11184585&pos=1&whse=BC&topnav=&a mp;prodid=11164673&lang=en-US
|
seeexxxy time!

Now I know where to send the So-Cal DPC wanna-be-bikini-models to have their pictures taken...
|
The 70-200mm is supposed to be a great lens and it better be considering the $1600 price they are commanding. It was one of the lens I researched, but there is no way it would be on my camera when backpacking or hiking, as it is BIG. Looking forward to seeing the pictures you produce with it Joe.

David, yes that is the one I saw at Costco and was thinking for someone needing to mirror their hard drives it would be a decent way to go. Everyone with anything of value on their hard drives should mirror them, or back up in some form. HD's fail way to often.
|
"nope, which means my head won't swell"

Neither will your wallet. Just kidding - that's an awesome setup. Congrats.
|
You guys are fans of the maxtor drives? I have a couple projects on them and i dont think there bad but im not a fan and personally would not buy any.

Good choice...Love my D200 Canon's are nice but the D200 is one of the best DSLRs ever made IMHO. Plus I prefer feel and ergo of the D200 over the 5D. I do wish it had a little less noise at high ISO but I rarely shoot over 400 so it does not matter. The 8GB card size is great as you get about 450 or 480 or so raw shots on it.

I love my 10.5 fisheye. Sometimes it is the only way to get the entire picture when you are close to something really big. Here is one of the brink of lower yellowstone falls I took a week or two ago

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1420/909787131_a16ef274f8_b.jpg

The 70-200VR is great as well. Check out this shot my dad got a few weeks ago of the sunset in Salt Lake

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1285/814146849_7a25898bbe.jpg

Although it really makes it money isolating the subject like this shot at 190mm and f2.8

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1203/910650388_000257d726.jpg

Another lens (it's only $800 or so) to consider is the 18-200VR. Although it is a somewhat slow, sunny day lens that some of the purist scoff at, it is a fantastic lens if you only want to take one lens.

Anyways, enjoy the new toy. I sure have

Later

Bakes

that sunset shot is AWESOME!

didn't know that the sb-800 shipped with a diffuser...sweet.

Allow me to interrupt this D200 lovefest for a second:

ISO3200 no N/R

You're right Canons are nice!

Nice setup Joe! I wish it were mine. I'm still using my D50. Someday...

Hey Rich, you better check that picture again. It' so noisy that it looks like snow on the edges

that 50mm is my favorite lens. It costs more then the Canon version so it must be better
|
"Hey Rich, you better check that picture again. It' so noisy that it looks like snow on the edges"

Ouch! that's what I get for making this thread go off topic!

That Nikkor 50 is a clean looking little lens compared to Canon's but they are both the bargain of the century, if you get a chance Joe post up a shot from it at f1.8.
|
i'm diggin' the 50!

the 70-200 and the 17-55 will be here tomorrow!

Love the fisheye. It is actually pretty good for center crops. Here is a center crop from the 4th using the fisheye.

My 50mm is so so sharp at 1.8 but sharpens up considerably by 2.8

Another lens to consider is the 18-200VR Although other lenses may be better at one thing or another, for a only want to bring one lens situation, it is hard to beat. Here is a night shot from Colter Bay

Later

Bakes

I LOVE that 50mm 1.8, I just bought it last week, EVERYONE should have one in their bag! Sharpest lens for the money! Swwweeeeeeeeeet pics!
|
nice joe. at my new job i get to use that camera to bad im a canon person. o well

Hey Joe, You going to buy a TC converter like they are pushing for you on FM?
|
i'm considering it.
|
Best deal is a Kenko teleplus pro from hongkong via ebay.
|
Congrats Joe.
You are going to have some fun with your new toys. The nikon 70-200 2.8 vr is an awesome lens & syncs up better with the advanced electronics on the d2x
& D200.
Thanks for the link-up Peter.
The 50mm 1.8 rocks Bess
Nikon teleconverters are far superior to any other off brand TC's Rich.
Nikon cameras and lenses can be used for wakeboarding/wakeskating and female model
photographs. Not like some other brand.
Samples attached.
Hope to see everyone at surf expo next month. Who is going?
Barry
Big Beach Studios

Wakeboarding- Danny T

Model- Carrie Sue- nikon equipment only for her

Barry
Nice photos
Mark one more for NIKON
good lighting on the lady
hairy arms tho
yuck
|
At $400+ for a Nikon and $97 for a Kenko they sure ought to be better!

I've found Kenko to be at about 90%-95% quality wise of the Canons depending on the lens. I'd sure want to give the Kenko a roll before dropping that kind of $.

Here's one with the kenko on my 400mm

Joshua, hairy arms (and some other blemishes) no more. Hope you don't mind that I post-post processed your image, Barry.

Jed Nice work. haha
|
Thank you for your input on the model Joshua & Jed.

Everybodys taste is different .

Guido will be visiting you Jed.

I usually process model photographs with only minimal necessary editing to keep things real.

Now back to Joe's thread topic.
Nice images Rich.
I have the same TC & another sharper Kenco DG digital version from overseas . All TC's degrade the image, however Nikon TC's degrade the least imho.
For commercial/mag work its better, to have a larger lens without any TC's if possible.
The TC's are fine for personal /web use.
Looking for a wider nikon lens if anybody has one available. 10mm+ 2.8 nikon
Maybe a trade for the 80-200 2.8 & Kenko TC's
Have a nice weekend WW's
Barry
Anybody know where to obtain/rent a barge with a crane in central florida?

Scot Ferwerda
