My boat will be on a boat-lift for much of this summer. In the past, I've had problems with birds (mostly crows) crapping all over everything. What have you found works for keeping crows and other birds away?

In my Cabela's catalog, there is a 12v deer and critter deterring device that uses an inaudible noise to irritate the hell out of animals. For $20, has anybody ever tried using one of these against birds? And what was the effect on your (or your neighbor's) dog??

I just had an alarm installed, and my plan as of now is to turn up the warning-stage of the proximity sensor so that birds coming near the boat will get chirped at as they get close. I don't know if it will work, but I'm going to give it a shot.

Put a dummy owl out by the lift, it usually works to keep other birds away.
|
...yeah owl or hawk ...but it should be higher than your boat lift...perched up looking down

in one of the football stadiums for NFL games they have a single hawk perched way on top of the stands and it keeps seagulls from swarming around the entire football field..its amazing that one little bird up top could keep the whole field clear.........just not sure if crows will care!?
|
Terry is right, I know a lot of people that keep a dummy owl near their left, usually right on top actually...
|
The dummy Owl may work for Crows, but with Seagulls they just sit on top of the Owl and crap on it.

While we're on the subject, I've got Bats that live in my boathouse and their crap is like Rat poo and stinks and gets everywhere. Any suggestions?
I've heard Bats are good cause they eat Mosquitoes, but how do I get them out of my botahouse?
|
build a bat house?
|
garlic? maybe a wooden cross stake? silver bullets? SOMETHING HAS TO WORK!?
|
I keep a rubber snake from wal mart on top of my tower and it works surprisingly well.
|
Huh, Bats don't like Coors Light?
|
The snakes actually exist...

http://www.birdbarrier.com/

I had to do some research for a local project. It turns out that there are different solutions for different species of birds. I had starlings build a nest on top of a rubber snake in my boathouse. Some birds only respond to a physical barrier.

HMR .17 works pretty well.

I use a gull sweep, mounted to the top of the tower.

http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/producte/10001/-1/10001/265279/377%20710/0/gull%20sweep/Primary%20Search/mode%20matchallpartial/0/0?N=377%20710&Ne=0&Ntt=gull%20sweep&Nt k=Primary%20Search&Ntx=mode%20matchallpartial& amp;Nao=0&Ns=0&keyword=gull%20sweep&is LTokenURL=true&storeNum=5&subdeptNum=11207 &classNum=13031

I went to home depot and built a base out of pvc that rests right on the flat part of a supra tower, right in front of the light, held on by a bungie. I built the base to give the sweep something to mount onto and be secure and not tip over in the wind, and to also lift it above the light....works great for the most part.

Here is a pic:

HMR .17 is really more of a larger varmint round. It has a loud report and waaay overpenetrates for nuisance birds. Don't want to accidnetally shoot the neighbors with a miss.
I'd recommend some smaller "shot shells" in .38 if you can get that close-this round is also good to have around the boat if you board in waters where croatids (north american poisonous snakes-i.e. water moccasin) abound.
If you *need* to use a bullet most nuisance birds can be taken while roosting with something as small as a .17 pellet or .22cb round. Keep in mind a .22 auto will not cycle a .22cb, you'll have to use a rifle, revolver or manually cycle the weapon. HTH

hey is it illegal to carry a pistol on your boat in texas?
|
In Texas? certainly not if you have a CHL. I know you can legally carry a long gun in your boat but as for a handgun I am not sure. I know you can legally carry one in your car without a CHL so long as you are not breaking any other laws.

I apparently failed at keeping Teradactils away from my boat last year.

Yeah, Sorry Michael, that's your boat buddy.

Good thing my wife is the best housekeeper in the universe. She spent a few hours cleaning the dinosaur poo.

Run around like a crazed idiot just out of the isylum. They still crap on everything, but it lets some frustration out. !@#$ birds.

Good lord...oh wow...ew... I'd buy a new canvas!
