DB hit it on the head. where Apple excels is the HCI side of the ball. Their interface design is second to none, always has been. That is what will draw the masses to the tablet in the same way they did the iphone. the beauty of the iPhone is not the hardware, it is how you interact with the device which is what made it revolutionary. <BR> <BR>I have always wanted a real good solution for architectures et all that i can draw and have it instantly transferred to the box. To date, there is nothing that i am comfortable dropping the $$ on, hoing todays announcement changes that.

It's going to be a hard core multimedia/ereader machine - not a "tablet pc" in the same sense as the full blown options that are out there. That being said, hopefully the new iphone OS will open up some seriously cool options for app developers to move beyond the current iphone limitations. If they can put out a decent remote desktop/citrix client for this iSlate or whatever they'll call it then I will be all over it. <BR> <BR>It also remains to be seen how they work the pricing/cellular contracts...

^ Yea, that is what i have been reading as well. My hope is that since it will be heavily touch sensitive that one would be able to run other apps than just ereader media stuff. I don;t want a tablet PC BUT I want a tablet that I can use with some draw capture apps et al. We'll see..

The greatest attribute of Apple marketing is there ability to keep things relatively under wraps until its ready for the public. <BR> <BR>Most tech firms announce their cool new concept and show you the demo. It starts the frenzy only to tell you it will hit shelves in 2 years. By that time better tech is already in the works and they dont capitalize on their own propaganda. <BR> <BR>Apple hits you with the propaganda and then strikes while the iron is hot!! They put stuff to market at the pinnacle of the frenzy. <BR> <BR>Its genius.

One of the people I picked up for casual carpool into SF this morning is the IT director over at Yerba Buena. He says Apple basically has taken over for days with their own security force - they can't even enter their own building. They have to check out keys to them - they can't even accompany to open doors etc. He doesn't even get access to the event! lol

Pure speculation... I saw that number yesterday. Supposedly few, if any cell carriers are going to pick it up because of the bandwidth that users will most likely use. That leaves WiFi... I also read about a possible dongle to your iphone and 3G...

I have been wanting to get the wife a Kindle or Nook since she reads a lot online on the couch or in bed (via website novels and not actual books). Currently shes uses my work laptop which is big and bulky and the iPhone is too small. <BR> <BR>My hang up was it needed a browser and to be in color anything else was a bonus. Hopefully Apple will then tie in an app that allows users to purchase books like the Kindle or Nook. <BR> <BR>This looks like just what we are looking for. yes it has "ibook" lots of industry support - just no cellular (can you tell i'm unhappy about that). the books use the epub format so hopefully you can load your own epub books onto it. i have also been trying to not get a kindle (waiting for something better)

After reading and watching some video, I'm still with my initial opinion. Neat device, not a game changer. <BR> <BR>As someone who has a Macbook with aircard, iPhone, and Kindle, it's going to take something pretty spactacular to make me want to go drop $800 on this thing or whatever they want for it.

It will cannibalize some macbook sales for sure, and itouch sales. But it wil do well. Also, this will jumpstart their academic sales again.

at 1/2" thick and 1.5 lbs this would free me up to work from just about anywhere without having to lug a laptop... and add an ereader which I've been wanting for a long time, as well as movies/tv for the plane ride etc. i like that the cell is pay as you go.

It's not just the iPad that has 3x the space to work with, it's us...the users. <BR> <BR>I know that using devices of difference screen sizes leads to different experiences. Using Aperture on my 24" iMac is FAR superior to using it on my 10" netbook. Likewise for Google Earth, and several other visual applications. <BR> <BR>Small screens suck for certain things (reading, browsing, watching movies, etc). It's a 'sum of the whole is greater than it's parts' thing. Scaling up from 3" to 10" on a multitouch device means more than just more screen to look at. <BR> <BR>But we'll see. 'Meh' was also the word of the day when the first iPhone came out and didn't have Apps at all.

Exactly. According to those on this board there are two things I hate - Apple and Christians (both are incorrect). But I like this device. <BR> <BR>Travelling around with .5" 1.5lb device will be much much easier than my laptop, or even the dell netbook (much thicker, heavier, bulky power adapter) - and it shares accessories/charger with my iphone, so no duplication there. <BR> <BR>I have been holding off on a kindle for a long time, so this device is a no brainer for me. Anyone want to buy a netbook? =)

I think it looks sick and will work just like a iphone, but it still has no flash support. <BR> <BR>I read somewhere that it will be $7xx for the 64 gb version, which is a bit steep. <BR> <BR>Also since it seams to be based of the iphone OS you should be able to jailbreak it shortly, which adds a lot of cool features like multitasking. <BR> <BR>(Message edited by jv210 on January 27, 2010)

That's expensive for the 3G models, especially since it's slow of hell. I'd rather use my iphone to tether.

The following is coming from someone who has a Blackberry because that is what my company gives me. I wish I had an iPhone. My 3 kids and wife have iPhones and they are an awesome device. Not a great phone for making phone calls, but a great internet cruiser, weather checker, GPS, phone book, calendar, and app machine all made really fast and easy. If the iPad is just a big iTouch - that's great. <BR> <BR>Now if Apple would just open up the ability to use something other than iTunes which is the biggest piece of crap software program out there. Just let me put what I want on my phone/itouch/ipad and organize everything using windows explorer the way that I want.

Apple has got their foot in the door at ground zero and has many more features than a Kindle. <BR> <BR>Its not trying to be an iphone or and itouch. Although it has their features which is smart by Apple to include them. <BR> <BR>Imagine your daily newspaper delivered, never late and never wet. Among the many other things it is capable of doing.

I don't see the big deal. Why would I want a supersized ipod touch? Was this marketed towards elderly people? I truly don't get it. My laptop does things that my iphone doesn't do such as the ability to install certain programs, have a ton of memory etc. From my understanding this has virtually no memory if 64gb is the max and the same OS as the iphone which is very limited compared to an actual computer. <BR> <BR>This is coming from somebody who has and loves their iphone. I also have a touch and really don't care for it very much, go figure. I think you are underestimating both the current app selection and the potential apps that will be taking advantage of the extra screen real estate. <BR> <BR>Like I said, this is not a laptop - but for most people it can do most of what many people use their laptops for... add in remote desktop capabilities for IT nerds like me and it is a pretty attractive portable device...

Its all about convenient/capable web access. Its the reason netbooks are popular. <BR> <BR>I don't want an ipod touch but I would like this -- a kindle with color and internet access!

I like it. Great sales tool to replace a heavy laptop. As I am not an Apple guy I have a question, are there spreadsheet/word processor apps available that are compatible with word and excel docs? What about powerpoint or pdf apps???

the "iwork" apps that have been rewritten specifically for this device are $9.99 each. compatibility with word/excel/powerpoint isn't known. <BR> <BR>i think it's highly likely that microsoft will eventually release versions of word/excel/powerpoint - who knows when though.

I was thinkin along the sales pitch and teacher prof line last night and this is a winner there. To be able control w no peripheral and see easily is a great design.

Clearly, the 'Book Reader" scuttlebutt muddied the waters for Apple. <BR> <BR>iBook was teeny part of the presentation, the device goes way beyond being a book reader. Of course, it's going to smother the Kindle DX...but that's because it does so much more. <BR> <BR>As for Office, even if MS doesn't step up the rest of the dev community will. Open Office, Neoffice, etc. There's no shortage of dev's who wanted to do this for the iPhone/iPod but with no sanctioned keyboard solution they've held back.
