How long has wakesurfing been a real sport?
More specifically, how long have the world wakesurf championships been around?
I know they have been surfing behind oil tankers as far back as 1970, but what about modern boats? When was a boat designed and marketed as a surf boat? I think alot of boats have 'surfable' waves, but i'm talking about the next level where you actually have a lengthy pocket. |
somewhere I heard the first Wakesurf Champs were held in 2003, please correct me if I am wrong

The 2003 event was actually the 2nd WWSC. The very first one was held in 1995 on Mission Bay. Pulled by a Centurion "WAVE" and Rusty Surfboards was one of the major sponsors. Tim Lopes, was the first World Wakesurfing Champion and organized the event for many years. Including that 2003 event. That 2nd WWSC on Lake Yosemite in Merced was held on June 12 thru 14. I'm looking at some of the sponsors from back in the day...Inland Surfer, Victoria, Indo Boards, Phase 5, Shred Stixx, Wakeboarding Magazine, Level X, amongst others. That's a blast from the past.

Wake surfing has been around for a pretty long time. My neighbors in Toledo Ohio were making surfboards for Cypress Gardens water shows in the early 1960s. They were surfing behind John Boats in the Cypress Gardens shows.
