Whenever I go to jump the wake, my knees bend and the board goes up but my body stays in the exact same place without going up or down, this usually gets me a foot or two in the air and I'm going so fast most of the time that that foot or two is enough for me to make it to the other wake, but this lack of air is getting really old. I edge as hard as I can throughout the wake everytime and put the rope at my lead hip, and stand up a little when I make it to the wake but this still happens everytime... what am I doing wrong, or what should I be doing? (if I try not to let my knees bend I get the same thing but with less air)Thanks for the help

Without seeing you this is a guess, but if the board is getting up ahead of you, you could be on your back foot too much. Try putting more weight on your front foot. Slalom skiers that board often have this problem.

Stand tall

No doubt, flattening the board out before hitting the wake and absorbing the pop with your knees. We used to clear the wake at about 1 foot high, by pure speed, but the falls were nasty.

The secret to air is to edge all the way through the wake, "progressive, and stand tall at the top of the wake.

The guy that taught us had this method, coast out about 15' and then when the rope starts to pull you back to the boat:

1. Drop your butt
2. Drop your elbows to your side
3. Hold your edge till you get to the top of the wake.
4. Stand tall at takeoff.

Easily said.

When you actually hit a progressive edge all the way through the wake, pop about 4' high, and land out in the flats, you will know the feeling.

The main problem is flattening out the board right before you get to the wake. You may not think you are, but video yourself and you will see.

PS If you do hit a good progressive edge and get really good pop, if you let your arms stretch out toward the boat, prepare for a nasty fall. You keep your feet under you by keeping the handle close to your body.

(Message edited by arlanj on July 21, 2003)

thanks for the help, I'm going to try to transfer some of the weight from my back foot and all that next time I go out... I was skiing before I got into this, so that's probably the problem, and I wasn't really dropping my butt either... I'll tell you how it works out tomorrow

Skiers that learn to wakeboard usually cut too hard initially and then coast across the wake (I know, that's what I used to do). For wakeboarding you want to start cutting slowly and edge harder as you approach the wake.

Try reading the instructional articles on Wakeworld and Wakeboarder.com, starting with this one:

http://www.wakeworld.com/Tricklist/TrickTip009.asp

Thanks for the help...
I actually get a decent pop off the wake now, but now I'm not making it very far to the other wake at all, just up then down, not very much over. I'll figure out the rest eventually, just wanted to say thanks.

you could have the same problem i have, my dad is a skier and doesn't give a rip about having a big wake. so naturally we have a really small one which makes it near impossible to get big air, if that is the case, suck it up, and make friends with people who have nice boats

Us Minnesota boyz were all skiers before wakeboarding and we had the most difficult time getting air, just like bill said we cut super fast and coasted across

I finally learned to take a slower, progressive edge, edge all the way up the wake, and explode of the top

The way to get out of the skier mentality is to take a slower approach but JUMP AS HARD AS YOU CAN--most likely you will be off balance and take a nice fall but you will get better air and develop that balance

The first jump in which you really get major air--you will know it--it is an awesome feeling

as hard as you can... I'm not doing that, I'll do it tomorrow...
I'm getting ok air now though, nothing special. The wake isn't a problem at all, it's huge, well, compared to all of the other boats on my lake it is, and they're all skiers and fishermen with only one other wakeboarder, but it's still really big.
