Hey, so, I need a hitch for my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and I was wondering if you guys out there who drive the same car bought non OEM hitches and how they work for towing a boat. I really just need it to pull the boat 30 feet and then back it into the water, so based on that, what would you guys recommend?

I would go with a Class III. You could probably get away with a Class IV if you wanted it. I'm partial to Reese and Hidden Hitch products, but there are alot of companies out there. I havent towed a boat with a GC, but I have towed drag cars to the track with one and had no problems. The wheelbase is a little short IMO for pulling a long load, but since you're only going 30 ft or so, I wouldn't sweat that <BR> <BR>(Message edited by bac on August 23, 2008)

u haul should have your hitch in stock, i paid around 300 installed on my infinity/pathfinder. it only took them two hours or so. and that included the flat 4 hook up.

I recently ordered my hitch online at uhaul.com. It was on my doorstep in 5 days and shipping was free. If you are so inclined to install it yourself. Mine was $134 to my door. Class 3 hitch for an 08 saturn vue. Holes in the frame were pre-drilled and threaded, the uhaul hitch fit perfect.

X4 on Uhaul, i don't think you can do better than them.

I had 3 JGCs. One had a stock hitch, one had a Reese, one had a hidden hitch. The Reese and Hidden worked well, a bit cleaner than the stocker. It's an easy bolt on, the frame has inserts for the hitch to bolt right into.

I'm not sure how far back this applies but these days, Grand Cherokee/Commander OEM hitches are ridiculously easy to install. All they are is about a 2' metal bracket that secures to 4 or 5 bolts running across a rear crossmemeber on the "frame." It's an easy 1-man job. I'd look into that before picking up an aftermarket. It sucks spending $120 on a 2' piece of metal but the install time makes it worth it. <BR> <BR>If your GC isn't set up like that, I'd just get a cheap Reese if you're going to install it or UHaul is you want someone else to install it. Either will work just fine.
