I finally found a boat that I liked and made the plunge.

It's a 1989 Mastercraft Tristar that needs a lot of TLC. I will do all the work myself, except the interior, cause I enjoy it and it saves me a lot of cash.
Heres a pic of the boat and its new captain, Taylor

The first thing is to get the Velvet drive out and have a look since it was pouring tranny fluid out as fast as you could put it in.

Once I got it out I could see why, the front seal was cracked and the pump gasket wasn't even there!!!
HMM where did it go? I have done everything possible to find it and it's just MIA. So I am guessing it was left out by whoever had it apart last.
The shaft is pitted and will never seal properly so I had to order a ready sleeve, just waiting for it to come in.
Next is to rip out the carpet, fun fun !!

I ripped out the carpet and found only 1 piece rotten and needing replaced, the piece between the consoles over the gas tank. Not to bad IMO. I will just replace it with marine plywood, since it was just plywood with a fiberglass coating on it. It was so rotten that It broke when i stepped on it.

Looks like it should be a sweet boat when you get her all fixed up.
Cool project! Looks like fun.
Nice, keep us posted!
Congrats on the boat man, I've never seen a metalflake TriStar before but my buddy has a ProStar that is the same color!

Keep us posted on the refurb!
+4 keep us posted I love these thread!!
I like these threads too. Thay make me wish I was more handy. I would never be able to tear apart my boat and get it back together the right way. Keep updating.
When you get her up and going, always remember to remove the bar from the bow eye before pulling her off of the trailer (I know from experience on my old '89 Tristar....) We forgot and backed off under power and bent it pretty bad. Good luck...

Been working my butt of on this this things tranny, I have totally rebuilt it now and it works good in reverse but I have to rev it to 2000 RPMS before it will go in forward.
Going to get a pressure gauge to put on it 2morrow and make sure its getting enough pressure and a temp gauge also.

Here's a pic of the old interior piece I had to make, The new one is done and carpeted and installed. Try to get some more pics. The whole boats carpet is done.

Sounds like it's moving along well, best of luck to you!
best of luck. keep the pics coming.
Now that you have that thing apart you should start adding lead in strategic places. Looks like a rad project. That is going to be a sick boat.
Was that from the richmond area? I was looking on boat trader the not long ago and thought I saw that. Good luck with it. It'll be great when done.
I don't know how fun it looks, but it looks like a good project. Good job bringing her back to life!
That's a good idea Spencer, stash it away!
It was from the richmond area, I went and bought it and brought it back to KY. It is a good boat for the price( I thought) if i could just get this tranny to work properly.
Here is some pics of the Tranny as I was taking it apart

Here is some of the carpet that I put in. It had some Ugly a$$ blue in it but I decided to go with gray.

Took it for a test drive today to see how everything worked, Well it did really good, except for my 1 of my Speedometers don't work.

Heres a pic of the wake at 20 MPH, I think, if the speedo is correct. Need to take a GPS out with me.

Nice project! Looks like you are having some fun with it!
Great project Dorian, keep the pics coming as she progresses.
Smart choice on the grey carpet! A good friend of mine bought a brand new '93 Prostar 205, and it had the same ugly BLUE carpet in it! I didn't have the nerve to tell him it looked like crap. I'm not sure what the MC designers were smokin' back then.
Fixed the speedos today, One of them was completely broke in pieces and the one still worked. I had 2 new ones with white faces that I installed. The real problem was the hoses were clogged up on the port side. I took a air hose and blowed them both out. Hopefully I will have good speedos next time out. I am going to take a GPS with me and check there calibration.
Took it out today and the speedos are both working perfect. The boat is basically done, except for interior, but when I hook up the tower speakers, They make a humming noise even if the radio is not powered on. Is there something I need to install to fix this problem.

Anyone have a good spot to stuff a 10 or 12 inch sub in this boat.

My head unit does not have a Ipod hookup on it or a Aux jack in the front. Anyway to remedy that without using a FM transmitter? I am a complete stereo NOOB and will need some help on this.
you can buy an aux plug and wire directly in the back of the unit. cheap fix from radioshack
