some time this moring pulling the boat to work i had no trailer brakes. even when the pigtail is not plugged in. my question is. has anyone had this problem before. my boatmate trl has the kind of tounge that is supposed to disengage the brakes when put into reverse. could the switch or whatever is in there be broken. any help. thankyouverymuch.

How do you know you didn't have trailer brakes?

If you think that they are not workign, the things you should check are:

1) be sure the mechanical lockout (for backing) is not in place. Some surge brake systems require a pin that is inserted, others have a lever or similar device.

2) make sure that the master cylinder has brake fluid to the proper level

3) check the adjustment of the brake shoes.

I was checking mine. And I'm thinking of changing to disc. Champion trailers has a kit from TIE DOWN for 399.99 All new everthing. Actuator, lines, calipers, disc, bearings and backup soleniod.
http://www.championtrailers.com/brkart.html

you can get just the 2 brake assys, 2 flex lines, reverse soleniod, and modify your existing master cylinder or just replace it for less then the kit will cost.

After rereading your post im geussing you already have disc, in that case no im sure your problem isnt a faulty reverse lockout solenoid since if the wire somehow shorted to the trlr it would have the opposite affect and your brakes would lock up upon reversing.

Try checking your brake fluid then bleeding your brakes just as you would with a car. Go to the championtrailer site about and there are tech tips on bleeding and troubleshooting.
