Board for wife
 

Hello. I am looking to pick up a board for my wife for Christmas. For the past 15 years of boat ownership we have been 100% wakeboarding so surfing is new to us. Of course we recently got behind a buddies X-23 and did a little surfing this past summer and would like to pick it up. Our boat is a Supra 21V and while I love the wakeboard wake I know it does not produce the best wave. I currently run 2400 pounds of ballast for wakeboarding. That is with 2 650s in the rear and 1100 in the ski locker. I am thinking about getting another 650 or so to throw on whatever side we are going to surf on. I am also looking into picking up a suckgate so any suggestions there would helpful as well.

So any suggestions for my wife's board would be helpful. Also, I am looking to get myself one and was thinking the CTRL Durado to get started.

Any suggestions would be helpful since this is all new to me. Thank you in advance.

There's three factors for wakesurfing. Board, Wave size, and skill. Skill can make up for the other two. That being said it would help to know what your wife's height and (dare I say it) weight is? Helps in determining the right board size or narrow it down at least.

Thank you for the reply. She is 5'3 and 120lbs...pretty sure she doesn't know what Wakeworld is and won't know I just posted that. She was able to drop the handle the few times we surfed this past summer. Again, that was behind a X-23 and the wave seemed legit.

I am 6'0 and 180 so if you have any suggestions for me as well. I do fancy myself as an athlete and think I can pick it up pretty quickly.

Your 21v will make a really good wakesurf wave. You don’t need to change much from your set up now. Just get a suck gate and play with the placement a little bit. You will be pleasantly surprised what full 650’s and the full ski locker will do. The swim platform on the 21v is the other issue. Not sure what year yours is but most have pretty big platforms and the platform has a sharp lip on the outer edge underneath. It digs into the wave and hurts the shape. The wake shaper is all you need but modifying the platform will also help. You can replace with a newer style or just make your own.

I've actually got what sounds like a similar boat to yours. You didn't mention what year, but mines an 06 Launch 21v. I've done a lot of upgrades for surfing if you're interested in any info.

I also wrapped my boat with a wrap from Zdecals https://zdecals.com/
And replaced the surf platform with a newer Supra surf style platform that I ordered from Germaine Marine in Arizona, but they shipped it directly to me in New Mexico.

I've also done a lot of replacement work with the lights on the boatmate trailer. The roswell tower is something I'm currently installing, I've also got re-upholstered seats that I'm in the process of reinstalling. I'm not particularly mechanically inclined so learning a lot of this as I go.

Hey Mattp. Thank you for that info! Mine is also an '06. You have done a lot to yours! Funny that you are also in NM. Not many of us on this forum from here. I am up in Albuquerque and currently storing the boat at Navajo Lake. This past summer was the first time I pulled it from Navajo and stored it at the Butte for a few months during the summer. I am thinking we will be doing the same next year. I assume that is where you frequent seeing how you are in Cruces. Anyways, thanks again for the info!

Wow, small world, you're right, not many of us here I don't think. Yeah, we spend most of the summer at the Butte, store the boat there and leave our RV at the park so we can just cruise up and be ready to go. I've heard Navajo is nice, would like to go, but it is a ways from me. We'll have to say hello some time this summer. I'm on instagram mattylp13 or nmwakesurf.

Can the conditions of the lake or wind have an impact on the wave? We have finally been out a few times and given surfing a try behind our '06 Supra 21V. I have been impressed with what it produces, but have noticed some inconsistency with the wave. My wife was surfing and the wave looked good. She fell and we circled back around and got her back up headed the other direction. No one moved in the boat nor did I make any adjustments to the ballast or wakeplate and all of sudden the wave was washy. It wasn't too windy, but blown out enough that I wouldn't want to wakeboard in those conditions.

It did this a couple of times over the weekend.

shallow water is about the only thing that comes mind. need to be in 10' or more to produce a good wave.

Perfect Pass was set at 11MPH, but I know it can fluctuate a bit. The shallowest I saw the lake was 30 feet so it should not have been the depth. We are still playing the placement of the suckgate and ballast. Overall I am pleasantly surprised by the wave. Shame it took 10 years of owning the boat to give surfing a try.

Wind can absolutely affect the wave. In my experience anything over 10mph is going to be noticeable. Anything over 15mph is going to be a pain to work with. In higher wind situations you want the wind at your back but also you want the wind coming in from the side you’re not surfing.
