Who has one?

I think I'm going to pull the trigger and get one around spring time. They look like so much fun. I've been wanting a commuter bike for sometime now. I was thinking about a crotch rocket, but (no offense to those who own them) it seems like almost every dude I see on one these days is some d-bag thug trying to be cool. I also considered a cruiser, but don't want to spend that much money. Last month I saw a guy on a supermoto with a dirtbike helmet on go wheeling past me and I decided that's what I want.

I've been leaning torward the DRZ400SM. It looks nice, and from what I read it is bulletproof. I would kill for the Aprilia SXV 5.5 or a Husky 510SM, but they're expensive and seem like high maintenance. What do you guys think? I know a couple of you have SM's

colorider 01-11-2010 6:40 AM

Ktm smr.

sinkoumn 01-11-2010 7:10 AM

Yamaha WR250x's are also a lot of fun and bullet proof if you can get your hands on one - especially for local rides and are . The DRZ's are also rock solid for the most part, but one downside is that they are heavy. Never been on a KTM, heard both raving an bad reviews.

What type of motorcycles have you ridden in the past?

And a 'crotch rocket' is like nails on a chalk-board, sport bike/motorcycle/motosaki/ANYTHING ELSE homeslice!

bendow 01-11-2010 7:28 AM

I haven't ridden a lot of street motorcycles...friends gsxr 750, dads harley, and my uncle's xr650l that I did not like.

I actually have a KTM MXer. I love it...for motocross, but I know having one as daily commuter would be expensive to maintain. I guess my top priority is low maintenance, reliabilty, and being able to cruies at highway speed.

Sorry for using the wrong verbage on the street bike.

seattle 01-11-2010 7:50 AM

Stay far far away from the Ape. They've had nothing but problems with that motor. The Husky is nice but I've read they need a lot of maintenance to stay healthy.

I'm in the market for one myself. I've been looking the Honda XR650R converted.

They're heavier but in true Honda fashion the bike is essentially bullet proof. The additional power enables you to smoke the smaller sm's and it will keep pace with traffic on the freeway with ease.

bendow 01-11-2010 9:11 AM

Cliff, I thought about the xr, but they are dinosuars. They haven't been updated since 93. When I rode my unlces xr650l...it felt like I was on a tank.

Sinco mentioned the WR250X. I just got done reading some reviews. I got to say I'm fairly impressed. May look into those a bit more. It has DI and can cruise at 75 pretty well with the 6th gear.

trace 01-11-2010 9:43 AM

^^ That's the newer liquid cooled version. Still heavy and bulletproof, but not so much a dinosaur.

I would not want to ride anything smaller than a 400 on the freeway.

seattle 01-11-2010 9:48 AM

The L and the R are polar opposites. The L is a dog but the R is an animal and a BAJA 1000 legend.

sinkoumn 01-11-2010 10:10 AM

You could also look at the Yamaha wr450f if you want more power for the freeway.

This guy has no problems with it (and if you watch the vid, skip the first minute or your co-workers might look at you funny from now on )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRfhIjqiIMA&feature=fvw

WR motors wont last long in full on freeway riding conditions. They don't hold enough oil.

Bendow.... I've got a DRZ400sm. So does CIE Allen. The most fun streetbike I've ever been on (and I've had all different sizes and types of "crotch rockets"... ha, ha).

It's a bit heavy, especially comparted to your 2T MX bike. It needs some mods right away. Pipe, airbox mod and jetting and you'll be totally stoked. It'll do 70-75 MPH on the freeway all day. Tops out around 100. Wheelies 2nd gear just rolling off the throttle and rolling back on. Clutches up 3rd no problem.

Stoppies, wheelies, blowing by traffic in the bike lanes and on the sidewalk... Just watch your license. It's wayyyy to easy to have fun on one. Ask Allen... He just got a 3 point ticket on his. LOL!!

Let me know if you have any more questions.

As for the XR's... They're great, but make sure it was converted right, or it'll be nothing but problems. One of the guys I work with has one and it's always down. Right now the motor is all apart. The oil pump was coming apart. How they work all depends on who did the conversion.

Another guy I work with has a SM610 Husky. Very cool bike. Out grunts my DRZ, but feels even heavier and longer. Lower riding position, too. Less like a MX'er. Plus parts are tough to get. He's always waiting on something. Doesn't wheelie nearly as well for some reason.

guido 01-11-2010 10:54 AM

Here's a old pic of mine.... I've added a bigger tank and a couple other things since then....

bendow 01-11-2010 11:52 AM

Killer bike Evan! She’s pretty

Where is your license plate? How often do the valves need to be adjusted? I’m sure the XR’s can be made into good supermoto’s, but I want something that’s turnkey. I don’t want worry about converting, inspection, etc. What’s it like cruising at 70?

I was looking at this one…it’s local. I kind of wanted to save up a bit more money or sell my RSX that I don’t drive.

http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/mcy/1518642064.html

If you want to do some digging about Sumo's, check out this site too, lots of good info:
http://www.supermotojunkie.com/

guido 01-11-2010 12:37 PM

Hey that one looks great. It's got all the mods you need. Low miles and a great deal.

Mine is a '08. I paid $5500 for it last year with 2k miles on it and all of the mods done when I got it. It also came with a bunch of extras including the big tank which is a major plus.

My plate is back there. It's got a fender eliminator kit which is really nice. Just a wierd angle in the pic and you can't see it. You could easily make your own plate mount and eliminator. I've now got LED turn siganls on the front, a supermoto fender from Acerbis and a folding CRG bar end mirror.

It's a sweet bike.... Like I said, it's a blast. If you're looking for a real (competitive) super moto bike this isn't for you, but if you're looking for something you can ride everyday, then the DRZ's are money.

As for the valves.... They're supposed to be checked early on. Around 1500 miles. I've never heard of anyone needing to adjust them. Then they go to 15k before another required adjustment if I remember correctly. Mine has 5k on it and I haven't touched them. I'm not sure if the initial inspection was done or not. Mine burns a tiny bit of oil if I flog it hard. You can smell it out of the exhaust, but you really don't have to add much between oil changes.

It'll go 70 down the freeway totally comfortable, all day long. If you push it to 75 you can hear it start to spool some RPM's and you start getting a wind blast. At 80+ you're really pushing it and you know it. 100 is on the rev limiter.

I've been drooling over a ktm 690 smc. Just think I would get in too much trouble if I had one.

bendow 01-12-2010 6:41 AM

Sinco, thanks for the website. A lot of good info!

Evan, I think I'll go the DRZ route which you have done. I just need to get my finnances in order first. I'm bigger, 6'1", 200lbs. While I like the WR250X I think it may be a little small for me.

The thought of riding a dirtbike on the road legally is extremely exciting and devious to me!

extremeisaac 01-13-2010 11:30 AM

"The thought of riding a dirtbike on the road legally is extremely exciting and devious to me!"

Makes me think of this video I posted a while back hahahaha

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAA28sfKmiY

bendow 01-13-2010 2:16 PM

That video is completely perplexing to me. Seeing a bunch of thugs on MX bikes burning through the streets is something I would never think I'd see.

grant_west 01-13-2010 2:18 PM

^^^^^^ That Video is pretty funny. And people like that wonder why they get their a$$ kicked when they run from the law.

deltagrubber 01-13-2010 2:43 PM

That's Baltimore for ya...........just think if they did that around a BART cop...............

buzz_grande 01-13-2010 3:32 PM

Big KTM fan. Just me. Really would like to be able to get one. Just not ready to get rid of my R6 yet. Super Duke would one hell of a ride though!

bendow 01-13-2010 3:59 PM

^^^ the super duke is super nice!

allen 01-13-2010 4:03 PM

This is why I got mine

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYu7DQn5vAI

seattle 01-13-2010 5:39 PM

Super Duke is so far beyond an SM, it's laughable to even suggest it in this category.

In a perfect world the two bikes I'd have in my garage would be and RSV4 and a Super Duke. Unfortunately that ain't gonna happen any time soon.

mikes 01-13-2010 5:40 PM

That's awesome Al. you guys got some cool streets out there.
I have a street legal WR450. I have not gone full motard with it because I ride alot of dirt roads. It's been real reliable so far.I changed the gearing, grabbed all the free mods, and added an Acerbis 3.3 gal tank. I don't ride it nearly as much as I should ( much to the popo's delight). That thing is a violation waiting to happen .It's the most fun you can have with yer clothes on

bendow 01-13-2010 6:39 PM

AL, is that you?

allen 01-14-2010 11:00 AM

Oh no that's not me. Evan and I keep saying that we need to do a City trip. But I need to get my last ticket cleared up before I go get another one.

bendow 01-14-2010 2:12 PM

ok, well be sure to post up a video when you get your ticket taken care of!

seattle 01-14-2010 5:02 PM

Meh that video was ok...

If ya really wanna go rogue take one of these for a spin around town.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4u0gio_6iE4

seattle 01-14-2010 5:10 PM

This Yammi is actually street legal.

bendow 01-14-2010 5:42 PM

a street legal trials bike? not my style, but pretty cool!

seattle 01-14-2010 6:15 PM

With my luck I'd try to hop a bus bench or something similar and end up on my face. I found that clip searching for clips related to the one Al posted.

I just finished getting my RC ready for the track this year and the thought of staring at it for the next three months is already making me stir crazy.

Now I'm jonesing for an SM. They're everywhere up here. It's the perfect style bike for a city with rain nine months of the year.

bendow 01-15-2010 4:25 AM

Nice bike Cliff! I like the paint job. I assume it's not a factory color...
