Sorry for more questions but trying to figure out which camera would be best for me before I buy.

Looking at the Canon Rebel, XTI and 30D...I don't have a ton of $$ but still want the best bang for my buck...mostly for wakeboarding shots (we aren't that good at it but fun trying), and of course kids and vacation shots...since I am not a professional photographer or even an intermediate one...would I benefit from the XTi or 30D...is it a bad idea to buy a used one from say Craigslist? or even something like this on EBAY.
http://cgi.ebay.com/CANON-EOS-Digital-REBEL-XTi-Camera-2-Lens-8GB-XT-i-NEW_W0QQitemZ130098342552QQihZ003QQcategoryZ147173 QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks for any suggestions and any help. I will be buying something next week. Maybe there may be some rebates again.

Pro's for the XTi: 10 mp and sensor self cleaning.
Cons: ISO range and performance isn't quite as good and at least for my XTi metering seems to be off as well.

30D pros: more substantial body, better AF
30D cons: price, 8 mp, have to clean sensor yourself.

If you're going to keep the body for a while I'd go with the 30D, you'll appreciate it's features more if you really get into it. If you want to just get started the XTi is a good little body, plus I think we'll see the next generation of the 10/20/30D series this fall.

I'd start with the Rebel and by then you'll know what you need/want and have more choices.

How about a used 20d or 30d from b&h photo?

look around for 30d... the xti has focus problems with fast moving objects (this has been the experience of users)..

i think getting one used from a reputable buyer is okay..

you might want to wait to see if canon has a upcoming rebate.. you can get a 70-200 f4 and 30d and that will hold you off for a while..

the last rebate for 30d/70-200 combo was $290 (total of $1338) vs $45 rebate only with the xti/70-200 @$1244 (prices from b&h)

the extra megapixels of the xti dont matter at all. the 30d is the better choise of the 2.
my opinion would be go for a used nikon d200, but it looks like your a canon fan. its an awesome sports camera and you should definately look into it.

AF accuracy is such a subjective thing. I think the lens has more to do with it then the system itself. For wakeboarding with a good lens like the 70-200 the XTi is OK. In AIServo it leaves a bit to be desired but then again so does the 5D.

The main thing I have to get used to is the differences in the metering between the 2 bodies. The 5D is dead on and the XTi is about 2/3rds of a stop underexposed. The XTi high ISO then suffers because you're always picking up noise in the shadows. If you like stuff straight out of the camera (jpeg) then the XTi is probably not the best body to get, I have to work on everything coming out of it to get anywhere near 5D quality. There's no getting around larger photosites and the XTi's are the smallest by far of any of the Canon DSLR sensors. But I'm done with anything less then 10mp after owning a 5D, when I look at my old 20D/1D stuff the resolution just isn't there.

Thanks for the info...I was looking at used ones on B&H...but seemed like only slighly more $$ could get new...I was looking at Canon due to a friend has the 6MP Rebel and loves it...figured if I had issues I could ask him for help...I just wasn't sure if I would notice a difference going with the XT/XTi instead of the 30D for $$ sake...I wanted to be around the 1+K range...and when I saw some of the EBAY ones looked like good deals
thanks again
