harryhog 03-10-2004 8:26 AM

dunno, i recon thats ok that he's got a board that he doesn't use that he can lend out to the females, its probably a really old board and so really thin so better for 'the ladies'.

I say nice one jonathan............

alindquist 03-10-2004 11:26 AM

01 or 02 Byerly Finless - Not sure on the year, all I know is it's the sh*t!
I also have an old school Wake Tech Gator (the one that looks like a Gatorade bottle) - honeycomb and has phasers all over the bottom - haven't riden on it in a long time but it was pretty bad ass when I bought it.

oh my god, how do you guys decide what you are going to ride?

jamesb 03-11-2004 4:04 PM

I can understand updating a board every few years, but why do so many people need so many boards (I am talking about the number of people who have 3 or more boards from the last 2 years). Do you buy a board just because its the newest one out? Do you have a lot of spare cash lying around that doesn't have any other use?

You may all feel free to update my board anytime (97 Double up Nelson). But I am not going to update it any time soon because I don't see a need. My only other board is a 95 Cordial (one of the original twin tip boards).
villageidiot 03-11-2004 4:58 PM

I just wanted to say *** CONGRATULATIONS *** to each and every one of you.

caribsailor431 03-11-2004 5:43 PM

why do you need that many boards?!
wakeboard4life 03-11-2004 5:52 PM

I have one...because last time I checked you couldnt strap on 10 boards at once. What do you guys do? Ride a different board every day of the week? "Hm today is Monday, I think I'll ride the belmont." But for real, if you guys have so much money lying around donate it to the BAHFNANB fund (Brad and his friends need a new boat fund). I take credit cards and personal checks ..Cant say if I didnt have wads of cash lying around I wouldnt have 10 wakeboards either though...oh yeah, I just noticed most post are like "me AND my friends have"..but still.

Wow james, that's so dope that you have a cordial. I like to collect boards and someday (although I don't know how likely it will be) I would like to get one of those. Does grant still make those things?

Actually, that nelson shape was seen as being ahead of its time...

jamesb 03-11-2004 8:51 PM

Naked, Grant is now married and living in Canada so the last time I saw him was the last time he was in Oz (about 1 year ago). I don't know if he is still making them now days but I doubt it. I grew up next door to Chief so I saw a lot of the boards that he made and different things that he tried with them. I remember when he started making them, people wouldn't let him ride in comps with them because they thought they looked too much like a trick ski, and not skurfer enough (lol)!!!

My Cordial, I tried to sell about 5 or 6 years ago but didn't have much interest. Thank god she didn't get bought because they are pretty rare now days. I am going to mount her on the wall of my garage shortly. Good to see somebody else who knows of the boards and appreciates the classics!

malibususpect 03-11-2004 9:11 PM

the only reason i have so many boards is because i upgrade every year or so but i never got rid of my old boards. they are still used as boat/bash boards it still is kind of retarted to have so many boards

wakeforce139 03-11-2004 10:52 PM

damn some people have a huge amount of boards, for me its a circa 2000 liquid force search (pimp board, seriously), and a 03 LF team

electricsnow 03-12-2004 7:33 AM

That's cool james! Those boards are totally unique...I remember seeing pics of shaun murray, dean lavelle, and bill mccaffray riding those things once they made it down to australia, so obviously some converts were made! And when grant was riding those things, he always had a snow influenced style and was hitting rails and what not. Anyway, thanks for the information!

And please...don't drill any holes in it!! Ha!

wakestar8878 03-12-2004 9:25 AM

On my side my family has been involved in the sport since the beginning. So we've just collected them over the years. Why get rid of them, they'll make a nice addition to a game room one day. Oh, I forgot about the '01 Hyperlite Juvi 131 also..

rock_n_boardin 03-12-2004 10:45 AM

Patty, no offense by the "for the ladies comment" Harry was right, when we have people on the boat that don't own a board I let them use one of mine. But the ladies in general have smaller feet and prefer a smaller board. So I have that board for them to use. It's probably a 98 WakeTech, which I bought new in 98 I think, this year I upgraded the sandle type bindings with a pair of Hyperlite Spin bindings.

I have spent about $350 total on it, so I think that is pretty cool for me to spend my money to have a board available for all, by the way I have had two "ladies" use my "ladies" board and come back the next weekend with their own board. They are stoked!!!

Ok, I guess I could be politically correct, I will call it the small person/feet board for now on.

OK I currently have 13 deck including surf boards and wakeskates. Last season I sold 5 boards to friends and family, the season before I sold 3. I just don't have enough space to store them all and everyone that enters my garage and either rides or wants to learn asks me to sell them something. I do have a small advantage, I have been buying stuff from Cobe and Charley Pattersons garages in Orlando for the past 3 years. Not to mention all the blems I acquire from Wileys here in Seattle. I keep rotating my gear. Necrasson told me once, a wakeboard is like a skate deck. When new, they have superior pop and flexibility. After a season of hard riding they don't snap like a new deck.

Here's my collection (I guess I just had to get in on this Pi$$ing match). I have the boards that I do because I collect them... only three or four of them were boards I used to ride (One I didn't bother taking a picture of, which was the 03 substance). Please take note of the sano skurfer, as that was the style of board from last year's alliance buyer's guide that troy navarro was doing a backscratcher on. I didn't include pictures, but I also have a number of wakeskates, old school skateboards, and peter line snowboards. If you notice anything else weird in the pictures, please, ignore it...

You all might find it interesting to know that I also have an extensive collection of name tags and hair nets...

I'll do these in two shots...I hope they work.

(Message edited by electricsnow on March 14, 2004)

Wow, not so naked, that is an awesome collection! Love that Sano...that is what we learned on many many moons ago...and I would kill to have it back. And your wake tech series is sweet too. Your profile says you're 23. Some of those boards are almost as old as you...ha ha ha.

cramey 03-15-2004 6:24 AM

solo, tubelite rides like a soaked piece of cardboard.

electricsnow 03-15-2004 10:03 AM

Sweet gregg! Do you know much about that board? I haven't been able to gather much information about sano...I know it was jimmy redmon's deal (the board even came with a board bag and it said "redline designs" on it, and I know that was his). After that, I don't really know a whole lot because when people talk about old wakeboards, they're always like, "Skurfer! Skurfer! Skurfer!" and you never hear about sano.

Anyway, if you remember anything like the year it came out or how old it really is, I'd love to hear it. And if you're looking for one, you may want to watch ebay, although sano is a hard brand to come by. I think I've only seen two sano skurfers on ebay, but with patience and persistence you should be able to get one.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you get rid of yours? Did you sell it, or did it break? The plastic on those wasn't that durable...it's not like the plastic the skurfers were made of. Later

mango 03-16-2004 12:24 PM

I bet most of the pro's have us beat if that's if they still hold onto all their wakeboards throughout their career.

blackandblue 03-16-2004 12:59 PM

not so naked, We got our Sano in like 91 I believe. If I remember correctly we got it at Cope's in Santa Clara. The Sano was like a surf board rather than a skurfer as far as materials go. Ours held up pretty well. We would regularly break fins and the heel straps but the board held up well. I know other people would snap them in half but we were not that advanced.

We loaned ours out to a friend who moved away and although we kept in touch for a while...well, I have no idea whatever happened to him after that.

Now, I know Cobe used to ride them when he was young and living in Folsom. Maybe Steve Hahn could find out more for you if you're interested.

Gregg-

Steve??? What do you know?
solo 03-16-2004 1:05 PM

veganx 03-16-2004 1:20 PM

The not so naked chef, if you ever want to unload any of your old boards let me know. There are a few in your collection that I'd love to have.

Lat time I counted I've got a dozen wakeboards and four wakeskates.

Troy, (from left to right) 2003 TFD DNA, 2002 Premier 140 DNA, 1999 Project Honeycomb, 2003 Belmont 131 DNA, 1999 Voyager, 2002 Vero, 2000/2001 Byerly 142, 1998 Lavell Honeycomb, 1997 Heer Honeycomb, (laying on the floor) 1997 Lavell Honeycomb, 1995 Shapiro, 2003/2004 Broadcast, 2002 Grubb.

electricsnow 03-17-2004 10:40 AM

Gregg, at first I was going to say that you must have had one of the higher end sano's, but upon inspecting mine closer, it might be more of a surfboard material. It's hard to tell...it's so light and the outer glass seems like plastic. But I'd say you're probably right because I remember reading a jimmy interview from 1997 and he said that when he first met tony finn, tony gave him a back handed compliment and said something like, "Nice boards>" And jimmy replied incredulously, "What do you mean, nice boards?" And then tony said something like, "Your boards are better than mine, but the public's not ready for yours." And then jimmy concurred...a number of years later...it's a good story.

Wow, I'd love to look inside of cobe's garage...if I could, one other garage I'd love to peep inside of is erich schmaltz's. And it's pretty incredible that cobe can keep that much stuff...I have my wakeboards in my room and I'm seriously running out of space...but I dont' want to keep them in the garage either. I dont' want them to get damaged...

Bird, I dont' think I'll be selling anything anytime soon. I thought about it, and I'll basically collect until I think it's stupid. And I don't know what i'll do with my stuff...I kind of like the idea of making a museum like the skate lab because I have all sorts of stuff. But since wakeboarding is so young, it'd be kind of hokey to make a museum at this point. But you know, it could be set up by a cable park or something...again, kind of like the skatelab.

Anyway, if there are some decks you're interested in, they are out there. A couple of them are more rare than others, but over time they'll re-surface. One of the rare ones I love is the Josh Smith board, just because I really respect his riding and his style and his attitude and...

Oh, and if you're looking for the old hyperlite, keep your eyes peeled...I've seen many on ebay, but very few of them aren't significantly faded.
