i have Direct TV but I wanted to get a DVR/TIVO in another bedroom. I know there are some for sale on ebay and other sites, but how does that work once i buy it?

do i just call direct tv and ask them to activate it? Does somebody have to come out and do it for me or can I hook it up and just call them for activation?

Any input would be great. Thanks!

You'll have to tell them in order for the new rec'ver to work. Depends on how they installed it. DVR takes two lines if you want to watch something other than what its recording. If your place is wired for it, then you may be able to plug n play but you'll have to notify them either way. May want to call them first before you shell it out.

i figured if i called them, they would tell me I HAVE to get it from them. I will see what I can find out. it might be worth it in the end anyway.

anyone else have any experience doing this?

Matt,

I got mine through direct. It was 199 bucks and included a service call to the house.

Get a DirecTivo, they'll send ya another access card for $20 and it's $5 per month for Tivo service on DirecTV.

Yes, if you buy one from ebay, you'll have to call them to have it activated. You need to make sure the receiver has it's original card and there's not a balance on that customer's account
