What do you guys recommend for tires on your trailer? We lost two on one side on our return from Lake Shasta yesterday. Thanks in advance.
Jeff

I have researched this due to tire problems of my own. My next tires will be Goodyear marathons. My trailer came with 2 ply load B Carlisles and they are not good tires. Mounted ,installed and balanced are approx. $ 100.00 a tire.

Never ever run the marathons. I dont know how they legally sell them with all of the problems people have with them.

Goodyear marathons are where its at. Everybody switches to those, and they are the best. Just do it, you will not be sorry.

Thanks. We also have a Sanger and the same Carlisle tires on a VM trailer. But I have heard that Goodyear makes them. Have you heard anything like that?

I've had 2 trailers with Marathons over the past 5 years. Pull 2 - 3,000 miles/year. Never a problem.

Marathons are great tires

I am running Maxis trailer tires on my boat trailer and they are awesome. My neighbor run them on his show car trailer and loves them as well. They cost much less but I have been very happy with them.

ccryder 06-11-2006 6:07 AM

I have blown 3 out of 4 of my Carlisles and unfortunately replace them with what I can get as long as they are different. I have Big O and some others, but Carlisles are junk. How much are the Maxis tires?

oaf 06-11-2006 6:10 AM

I bought them 4 years ago for about $55 each. The the price was great.

sangerlover 06-11-2006 9:06 AM

Jeff--
Just wondering how old the tires were ? Did you have your boat overloaded with camping gear ect.? What was your rate of travel ? I have been making an effort to drive between 60 & 65 mph. Also not to put more than say 700-800 lbs camping gear in the boat. Hopefully I will change out my Carlisles with Goodyears before going to Tahoe next month.

I went looking last week
the tire stores here in Arlington show a national backorder on Marathons
next week I'll try to track down a store that has 1 in inventory

jeff_ostman 06-11-2006 9:47 AM

JTW,
The tires are 4 years old and appeared to be in great shape and we had nothing in the boat but boards and vests ect. The heavy stuff was in the pickup and we were running about 65mph and felt a vibration. We stopped to look and didn't see anything funny and took off again. We didn't go a minute before they went. The rear tire completely flew apart bending the fender into it and peeling it like an apple. The diamond plate was knocked off and a piece of the rubber must have swung around and broke off the valve stem on the front tire. Somehow nothing touched the boat but the trailer will have to have the fender cut off and replaced. . Spent a few hours on I-5 until we could get things back together. It looks like Marathons and steel valve stems are in my future. Thanks to all for input.
Jeff
PS Shasta was great! Still stuff floating around. If you are heading that way be sure and buy your gas at Holiday Harbor. 3.89 gal. Cheapest on the lake by far. Bridge Bay 4.95 gal. The average was about 4.50 gal.

Make sure you get a load range-c. That is a 6 ply tire. Tire manufactures recommends replacing tires if they are 5yrs old regardless of how much tread is on them. Trailer tires tend to dry crack faster from lack of use and will cause a tire to fly apart.

sangerlover 06-12-2006 6:01 PM

I had the Marathons installed today. That was another $500 . These boats just keeping sucking you dry. Just this week I spent $1500 on the boat. Wife is not happy with me right now.
