I have been winching a little bit this summer. It is fun if you want to hit a small body of water or river. You can make one for around $1000 which is dependent on what parts you find on craigslist. They are easy to drive. We don't use a brake as our winch has a centrifugal clutch so when you turn the motor off it stops spooling quickly. The best part about the winch is that we fill the gas tank about 3 times a year.
