Oil change pump
 

I have always done my own oil changes on direct drives by letting the oil drain out the drain tube using gravity. I have heard on v-drives this can be a very slow process so it is recommended to pump the oil out through the drain tube. Any recommendations on the best value pump for this job?

I use a Moeller vacuum pump that is easy and quick.

I made one from a drill pump at home depot for a couple bucks.

I have one of these that I used on my old boat that didn't have a drain tube, it worked great. I've had it for for years and it comes in handy for car stuff too. Spend the money and get a good one, I had $30 one that really sucked but I can't remember what the brand was.

I use the same one as Jay and it works great. I used it to bleed the brakes on my trailer the other day too. Lots of uses.

I also use the same one as Jay and Jamie. I use mine for adding and draining the transmission and V-drive as well as the oil.

I have the Jabsco electric unit mounted on a bucket. I took that same advise and spent money on a "good" unit but I have been very disappointed with my purchase. The fittings/transitions on the Jabsco unit did not seal well and disintegrated over time. This also caused priming issues. The unit is top heavy so when "empty" is may tip a spill any residual oil. The unit itself and the hoses do not store easily. I have two of these units and wish I had something else.

Don't screw around with anything else, get what Jay has. I tried a lot of different one and ended up with what Jay posted.

It's as easy as sticking the hose in and pumping 15 to 20 times and let it do it's job. Might have to pump a second time for the engine,but that's it.

I started with the vacum style and it worked ok . I work on these boats every day and I got tired of waiting. I went to the Jabsco style and have never been happier. It does cost alot more but its so much faster and seems to do a better job of getting "crappy" oil out. I have it for 4yrs. Has have done a couple hundred oil and tranny changes without a problem. It is a little top heavy and tips easy but I found keeping in one of those plastic milk jug holders works great! But for a DIY guy the vacumn stlye is good enough. But if you want to get it done quick and know for sure you got it all the jabsco is the one. Jabsco easier to empty as well.

I feel strongly enough about it to say it again, I have two Jacsco's and they have been crap.

I bought a 12V one for about $20. Pumps a quart in about 30 seconds probably less. Just clip it on to the battery and go. Not sure why I would want to use anything else.
