23 MB surf weighting
My friend has a 13 MB twb being delivered in a couple weeks, I am fortunate enough to be going to Lake Powell with him in September with his new MB. I am starting to enjoy surfing more these days and wanted to find out from MB owners how to weight his boat for surfing? Can it produce a nice wake with factory stock ballast? I think he might have an extra bow sac for it, but no other bags.

can you bring one of the sumo's out of your boat for the trip? A sack in the corner really helps, even just a 400. Otherwise, you know the drill.... pack everybody on the surf side. Bow weight will help, but only to counterbalance weight in the rear corner first. surf side factory full, non surf side factory partially full (when on plane empty just until wave cleans up).

Lots of discussions about this over on MBboatowners.com

That's correct. You want to sink the boat first, then get side to side weight second. With that many guys, especially if they are big, you may just be able to run full factory ballast and switch sides with people. If the wave is still a little washy, you just open the gate on the non surf side for a little bit till the wave cleans up.

all the info you need is in these 2 threads...and pics are in them

We took a 2013 B52 out last weekend for some surf time. We plumbing in a pair of the Fly High W842 gravity games sacs the week before, so this was the maiden voyage for this boat. Surfresh Drew was at the controls most of the time as he knows how to weight these boats, but I believe the basic setup was: stock tank on off side half full, surf side tank 100% and about 900 lbs in the sac. Wake plate about half way and speed about 9.5. The wake was awesome. lots of push and a smooth transition. On Drew's 2012 last year, we tried a pair of the W719 Jumbo surfs. Although the W719 and the W842 hold about the same amount of water, the MB liked the weight running more along the side as opposed to concentrated on the rear corner of the surf side.

that's interesting. we always run a lot faster.... 11.5 to 12.

Can't argue with that wave though!!

the other boat i was looking into shipping

i gotta get an MB. One ride behind Drew's was all it took to convince me.
|
shawndoggy..we always surf at 10.7 with a similiar weighted boat to that one, but we dont use the wake plate deployed. i may have to try it next time out slower and plate down and see how it compares.
|
slight correction Tige Mike, we ran 10.3 to 10.9, anything under 10 is mush, good time though and thanks for the post !
|
thanks Drew..i was kinda scratching my head on that one.

My setup is similar, but I run a 1200lb "Enzo Style" sac instead. Surf side full, opposite side 1/2 full, speed around 11 mph and plate 1/4-1/3 down.

Seeing how the new MB tower doesn't have a rear loop does the rope pull down/put pressure on the aft portion of the bimini when pulling a surfer or boarder? It sure looks like it is in the picture above from the surfer's point of view.
|
brett..ive never noticed that. surely it doesnt though?? i have the "old" style tower on my 2013.

I have always used the ski pylon when surfing.

Drew,
I know you have a plug an play, did it come from the factory installed with the pumps and thru-hulls or did you do it? Also, just ballast in the lockers? No under seats or bow? |
yeah we did the system, I use the gravity games center bags on each side, they run from the lockers to under the seats, two reversible pumps with through holes and a side dump / vent on each side, no bow weight but yes under seats
|
I see, so you're not filling the entire locker with a bag? Just the 565lb bag on each song that runs from the back locker to under the seats...how far forward does it come? About the same distance as the stock hard tank?
|
Probably get a lot more storage this way?

It holds 1180 lbs. |
Oh I see, but its a 88" long and 19" x 19", so I am guessing where it extends into the passenger area it isn't 100% full, or are the MB under-seat 19" high? With it only 19x19 in the locker, seems like you could put a lot of gear on top of the bag still...me likey:D I have seen a lot of folks putting 380ish under the passenger seats, and a 750 or an 1100 bag with 800 or so in it. This wave seem to be just as legit as any MB ive seen to date, I would prefer to run one bag and put some vests or lunches on top the bag...I like this setup. Zero bow weight right? I dig it.

yeah for sure, I put bumpers (huge ones) jackets, ropes, anything soft, but with a MB you get the warming tray to put the KFC in :)
