I'm thinking about buying a Mac laptop. Just wondering what you guys would recommend that have experience with Mac. My last new Mac was probably in 1997, so it's been awhile.

I know this site, so before anyone else chimes in, I don't care to hear about how much better ________ PC is. I have two POS PC's right now and I'm really looking for something new.

Now back to the question. I'm mainly looking for something to surf the internet on while watching TV, catch up on work e-mails, and maybe store some pics. I don't really do much else on the computer anymore. Do I need more than the $999 MacBook?

I would think so. I really wish i could get by with a $999 Macbook and not a $2500 Macbook Pro

You have not identified anything that would lead me to believe you need more than the $999 Macbook. With Apple, unless you have a specific use case to clearly justify upgrades, you probably don't need them. Apple's also age well, so you don't need to think about spending on hardware overheard to run the next 4 years worth of antivirus add-ons and a blown up registry.

I have a 1.2ghz G4 Mini that spec out far below the current Intel Macbook that runs fantastic for general use. For that matter...I still regularly use a G4 iBook running Leopard that by PC standards would be 100% obsolete. It's not the fastest machine, but it works well.

If you decide you DO need a little more machine, don't overlook the refurb deals in the Apple store.

Nope. The low end mac is Waaaayyyyyy more than enough for your tasks.

Agreed, that is what my wife runs and it is more than enough and that is about all she does not to mention the fact that she picked up the UI rather quickly.
