I'm basically finished with my winch spool. I have a little welding and Line-Xing to do after I finish the frame and give it a test run. It ended up being a little wider than I planned with 9.5" inside the wheels and a full 15" between the outermost points. Here is the materials list (prices are approx/guess):

2 piece go-kart wheels (Free)
2 three ft 3/16 threaded rods ($8)
2 three ft square tubes ($10)
2 pizza pans (yes thats right!) ($8)
1 3/4 go-kart axle (Free)
Misc nuts and bolts ($20)
1 go-kart sprocket (Free)
2 go-kart axle hubs (Free)

Comments and suggestions are appreciated.

I'll take 2 large pepperoni and mushroom.

Looks good. Do you think you'll feel vibrations down the line from having a square spool? I'm just wondering, I've seen a lot of people do the same sort of thing.

Mama-Mia, the pizza pans are awesome!

I hope the wheels hold the pans rigid enough. They get quite a lot of outwards pressure from the winding of the rope. I didn't expect it when I built my first spool and had to redesign.
You don't really know until you test it out.

Yeah I was a little worried but they are surprisingly beefy no pun intended. Our other winch is square and I don't feel a thing... once you get 1000ft on there you don't notice.

well crafted.. very resourceful

we found that our spool diameter was to small and we modified it. that made a world of difference.. in fact if i was to do another i would increase it still.
i cut the metal and had the bars welded in where the chalk marks are.
replaced the old line and.. shred.

is a 4hp motor to small? reason i ask is i can get one for free it runs great so i would like to use a freebe if i can.... my brother thinks if i get the right sprocket size it wont matter how big the motor is but i think ill need a little more hp to yank a boarder acrossed the lake???

any input would be nice!

dont mean to hijack your thread...

CZimmerman,
I think the first winch was a 3.5HP that they used in the movie Sfumato years back. I think if it is geared correctly, then you will be able to pull a boarder, but deep water starts may not be in the picture.
