The amount of fresh water in the delta has to be adequate so that the depth is enough to keep our intakes above the brackish water. It will come down to how much fresh water flows down the main Sacramento river. As low as the gold country reservoirs are, we can't count on much coming down the San Juaquin and American river watersheds. |

http://www.ccwater.com/salinity/Hist...rt-2010Feb.pdf - is from 1994-2005 data on where salinity reaches in certain months of the year. starts on page 29 and the graph is on pg33.
their starting point was crockett, ca they would see how far in miles salinity would travel. looks like it would reach Antioch in the months on august, july, october, november, and december. so roughly 25miles from crockett... salinity didnt really touch rio vista. which makes sense because there is greater flow from the the sac river than the san joaquin due to the pumps. this picture should explain it. here is the link of the website i got it from http://mavensnotebook.com/dpg/images...outh_Delta.jpg |
Always wondered that, nice job B
I just watched that youtube link that someone posted earlier about the drought of 76-77 and it shows them putting in temporary rock dams to keep the saltwater from backing up the delta. As others have stated basically the less the flow from the lakes the further the salt water will come up the delta.
They put those rock dams in and out every year. See delta mendota canal and California aqueduct if you want to see the delta water going south.
They announced on our local weather news broadcast we would need three storms a week to roll through nor-cal to get out the drought by summer. With a sunny 10 day forecast again its looking like the drought is not coming to an end soon. Good news is historically after this type of weather pattern the following years have been very wet and got us out of the drought.

I was checking the weather last night and there was a weather alert with all the records California has broken so far this year. I thought it would be informational for those that are reading this forum and don't live here. There was more but it was just listing the previous records and the day they were broke. On the plus side it's RAINING TODAY!!!!!!

what we'll be dealing with...look at 2002.
If the gov is allowed to put the sacramento river in two 40 foot diameter pipes at freeport the salt will come in further than ever before. Anyone with half a brain should be able to figure that out.

Looks like NorCal has some relief coming. Supposed to start raining and snowing like crazy. I saw on the news that Tahoe could get over 6' of snow by Sunday. Hopefully it helps you guys out.

If be very surprised if then mountains get 6 feet, 3-4 tho is still gonna be money. Just read this from NOAA, especially the end

1 inch rain = 1 foot of snow.

snow level over the weekend is going to be 7500-8000. I wouldn't spend money anywhere lower than kirkwood unless you like riding in the rain.
Money? Season pass!!but ya definently could be kirkwood 2 in a row.

Pineapple Express is delivering

I stand corrected, Sierra at Tahoe got 74"

Sucks for you guys. We are having the exact opposite in western MI. The lake I live on has been frozen enough to walk on since Thanksgiving and we have had snow cover on the ground since about that time as well with about 20" or so right now. Seems to snow at least some every day with at least one 6"+ storm per week and the average high for January I bet is somewhere in the teens. I am a winter sports guy and I still think I have had enough.
We are good storm rolling through one after another now. Snow pack building up. Love it.
Insane how low your reservoirs are out West. I see the pics but it's still hard to imagine. Most of my riding is on a tidal river, so it's up 6' and down 6' every day but that's it. A little higher or lower depending on rain but even the tidal swing seems like a lot to me compared to growing up spending summers on a lake that lost maybe 1' at most over a season and even dry years weren't a lot lower. East coast is very different, and personally I wish we could send some of this rain and snow your way because it's getting old! Here we can't use our boats as much as we'd like because it rains every other weekend (with associated wind) or it's too damn cold half the year and out West the weather is great but there's no water.

That picture of Folsom Dam is disturbing, and to rub salt in the wound, the 10 day forecast is bone dry and we already in mid February. We have had one good storm in the last 15 months, time is running out! unless we have a record breaking March and April unfortunately a severe drought will be with us this summer.

New Melones isn't even going to open their marina this year, sounds like the lake will be 5mph max. Our local water hole, Woodward Reservior just announced today that they will more than likely close to the public for the spring/summer due to low water.... The delta is gonna be packed with idiots this year!!!
Sorry to hear about all this bad news down south and here I sit in my office wondering what to do this weekend because its finally going to be sunny, nothing but rain, rain and more rain for the past few weeks, then all the snow we had up here in the NW before that in town, the mountains got a pounding of snow and the rivers here are getting high. To bad there wasnt some sort of pipeline from the NW to the south... lol, Its not like we would miss the water up here..
Ken, actually Eastern Wa was suffering from lack of snow and rain until this past couple weeks. The snow pack was down something like 45% until the last recent storms hit...

[QUOTE=Pad1Tai;1857880]Lake Travis, Texas
Pretty sad............. [QUOTE] I went out to Lake Travis last summer while at a Dell school just to see the lake after I had heard a lot about how low it was I simply couldn't believe it. I used to ride my JetSki there a lot while in college in the early 90's and did some scuba diving out there. I took a couple of pics of one of the marina's. http://www.jpmotorsports.biz/boat/laketravis1.JPG http://www.jpmotorsports.biz/boat/laketravis2.JPG |
Great time to do work to your docks.

Looks like Cali is finally getting the rain they need so bad.:D

Finally some winter weather in the Sierras! Coming back from Northstar this evening, spent two days up there, great snow right now at 6000'+. Even Boreal got a good dose of it over the past couple days. If you ski, get up there!
Folsom Lake hit the 400 feet mark today that takes off the 5 MPH limit. The lake filled 40 feet in just over a month. http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/q...23&span=30days

Shasta yesterday.

Shasta is 105' down right now, question is how will it be in July? When do they typically start releasing water? and the big question will be how much are they going to release this year in comparison to other years?
It's going to be low for sure come July. Still will be plenty of water in the main body but really limits what ramps you can use.
We have a houseboat reserved for July 13-20, still on the fence about paying the full balance or cancelling and rolling deposit over until next year. We typically launch from Silverthorne, its a lot of money to pay for a sub par vacation. I have never been on the lake when its been below 75', good news is it looks like Redding is going to get some more rain over the next week.
JRod, Lake San Antonio pics are so sad :-( I know Naci is very low too but is it still ride-able or not?
I've already canceled my Shasta trip. We usually camp up at Antlers. At 80' down, they move the marina down to Sugarloaf. That would be a 10-15min ride in the truck just to get to the boat. I think at 150' down, the Sac. arm is 15mph all the way out. There's another what, 30-40 min boat ride just to get to open water? Then another 15-30 min ride to hopefully find some smooth water? No thanks.
^^^ Cancelled ours too. Jones Valley wouldn't budge on the price. Just not worth it to pay full price for the conditions. I can take 2 trips to Mexico for one Shasta trip. Good news for locals is Whiskytown is never down more than 10ft (at least in the 30 years i lived there) but its a lot smaller. Still a nice lake.
The ramps down by sugarloaf are a mess also. Not bad this time of year with little traffic, but Memorial weekend is going to be a zoo. Talked with a Ranger last weekend he said by around July 4th Shasta will be 135' to 140' down already. It will be a combo of 5mph and no ski area's till you reach the main body. Antlers has been working on the pilings for there docks across from Sugarloaf for awhile now they are still only in 50' of water so I wonder how long they will stay in if the ranger was correct with the
lake levels. |
Another Shasta cancel here, we were booked for mid July. Water level looks like 135-140' down during this time. Nobody in our group felt good about this, so we are rolling deposit for 2015. Hope we get some good rain and snow for next summer.
How is Nacimiento looking for riding now? I talked to someone there and it sounds like it's low but still usable...is that true? Thanks!
That sucks :-( Has anyone been out there this year? Any other options in Central/So Cal that are half way decent?
