I have a watersking background and I tend to go way out into the flats and cut pretty hard...I think I am doing it wrong. How far outside the wake should I be?

10-15 feet on most w2w stuff, but it really depends on the trick...

think of your edge as a number system. Cut out about 10-15 feet and flatten out the board. when the boat starts pulling you toward the wake, start your edge at level 1. You want to be at level 10 by the time you get to the other side. You will be increasing your speed by each level as you edge toward the wake, never come off your edge. Stand tall at the wake, do not try to jump, just stand up. when your ready to land hold that edge again and edge away from the wake. Repeat steps for toeside. <BR> <BR>It takes practice and the progressive edge is one of the hardest things to master in wakeboarding. I hope this helps a little. <BR> <BR>Line tension and edge control are key factors. Just make sure that you keep building your speed and stay on edge, if you come off edge you decrease your speed, lose line tension and might not make it wake 2 wake. Just keep edging all the way through. <BR> <BR>Go get it.
