Mike- is there really a "market" for this? I mean, it's one thing to shoot medium or large format film, but what type of application would demand any more than 50mp?

isler 12-19-2006 8:37 PM

Scott- <BR> <BR>If they can sell them, there's a market! =) <BR> <BR>For the scan backs, sure. There are a lot of reasons they're good. For studio work, you have full view camera movements, and digital capture. It being digital, you're working with a first generation image than a second gen scan. You've got a lot better control over exposure, and no grain. Check out the info here: <a href="http://www.betterlight.com/why_better.html" target="_blank">http://www.betterlight.com/why_better.html</a> . I realize I'm just throwing marketing links at you, but I honestly don't know enough about scan backs. I have used them a few times, as well as multi-shot MF backs. Not too useful for what I do. <BR> <BR>If you're an architecture shooter, or a tabletop product shooter, these products are great. <BR> <BR>As for the Gigapixel project, that isn't designed to be a commercial project. However, reading about it is very interesting...and there are prints that have been made from the images that are astounding (from what I hear).

Oh yeah, as for what type of application would demand more than 50MP... it's hard to say. I'm not qualified to answer that. However, for some fine art work... say, if you're going to be making a 40x60" print, there is a difference for sure. Scientific applications as well. Also, for historical/archiving usage. Think about photographing documents or paintings, and not just to have a picture of it... but to have a real RECORD of it. Can't really have too much resolution there. Possibly for investigations. With that much information, you can really explore the scene post-capture. I'm sure there are other uses... but like I said, I'm not qualified.
