Those of you who have done the lead (lead from the tire shops, etc) bags yourself, what bags did you use?

hatepain 02-02-2010 4:13 AM

bump.

dennish 02-02-2010 7:27 AM

I put together some scrap steel (the punchings from a washer manufacturer) in 45 pound lots, we have a heavy duty plastic bag sealer at work, I double bagged it in plastic then sewed up some canvas bags with handles for the plastic bagged weight to go in. I like it so much I pulled out my lead bars and use the bags instead. I think I paid 10c a pound for the steel disks. I'll take some photos of them this weekend.

bremsen 02-02-2010 7:48 AM

I got mine from pop products, well sorts from someone who had got them from PP. contact them and they will sell you just the bags.

denverd1 02-02-2010 7:54 AM

Home depot has heavy duty bags

bandsecurity 02-02-2010 6:49 PM

Ordered pop bags w/o weight. It was a couple years ago, but he only charged me like $6-7ea for bags and liners. They're nice and heavy duty and hold 45-50lbs of lead tire weights.

bandsecurity 02-02-2010 6:54 PM

I found some canvas bags with zippers at Walmart or Lowes that hold about 35-40 lbs. Had 'em for several years now and move them around quite a bit. i think they were 2 or 3 bucks each.

wakevb 02-03-2010 5:03 AM

I dont use bags but use the plastic jugs that protien powder (6 lbs) come in. They are durable and hold about 60 - 70lbs. I fill the voids in w/ sand. I duct tape the container for support.

Good luck on getting lead. It was banned for tire weights in CA. They are going to run out of old stock fast and the new stock on hand can not be used. The fines are $2500 per instance.

Most wheel weights from the Japanese are zinc as are the European cars. Europe banned lead in 2005.

On that note we just pulled around 30 pounds of lead off the bottom of the ocean to smelt down and pour into a form to make custom weights, and plan to do that as much as possible for little extra $$$

denverd1 02-03-2010 8:10 AM

found a tire shop with mulitple 55 gallon drums filled with the tire lead weights. so far not a problem, I already 350lbs at my house.

denverd1 02-03-2010 8:11 AM

Nacho no go at wal-mart.

bandsecurity 02-03-2010 4:32 PM

Sears craftsman bags is what I landed. $10 each and will hold 50lbs. They've lasted 3 seasons.

toneus 02-03-2010 8:22 PM

you can buy lead bars or shot from www.robbinsmetal.com

peter_c 02-03-2010 8:50 PM

Anyone have links to the bags at home depot, lowes or sears that they are using?

Hate, how do you "close off" or seal the pop products bags after you fill them?

ghostrider_2 02-03-2010 8:55 PM

Amazon has the klein bags cheaper. Mine look very similar, just darker in color with no logo. 30-40lbs in each.
http://www.amazon.com/Klein-5139-2-Inch-Canvas-Zipper/dp/B000BQRCKY

peter_c 02-03-2010 8:59 PM

A buddy of mine uses these military ammo cans that work well. They hold about 70 lbs and have a handle. Very durable as they are made for carrying heavy loads and cost between 10 and 15 bucks. http://www.usmilitarysurplus.com/surpluscatalog/product_info.php?products_id=841

ghostrider_2 02-03-2010 9:03 PM

Along the same line as Mike, there are Army surplus bags that carry a Tank Tool Kit. They are very strong.

Like these...

http://www.fatiguesarmynavy.com/store/subcat/272/Mechanic_Tool_Bags_Tankers_Tool_Bag

"found a tire shop with mulitple 55 gallon drums filled with the tire lead weights. so far not a problem, I already 350lbs at my house."

Not sure what you paid or if you paid, but lead is worth a minimum of $.80 a pound. Typically it sells for a $1.00 a pound as scrap. There was someone on craiglist selling an entire sailboat keel of around 2 tons of lead.

ghostrider_2 02-04-2010 11:20 AM

Peter, the only thing it is costing me are some monter drinks for the crew.

denverd1 02-04-2010 11:34 AM

is that the price at the recycling center?

ghostrider_2 02-04-2010 8:01 PM

Take everything you can get Then get your buddies to show up with some Monster drinks and load your bags for you in trade for some lead! I can not imagine how much one 55 barrel weights.

ralph 02-06-2010 11:54 PM

where do you take it? like the normal place for can and bottles?

ghostrider_2 02-07-2010 12:38 AM

the 5 gallon barrels weight 170lbs each. Thats is how much I get each time.
