I'm going to post pictures of Smith Mountain Lake/Blacksburg area that I take here. If anyone else has pictures of either of these areas (preferably SML), feel free to post them here.

I made this background earlier. The picture is the spot on the lake where they had the Double-Up competition for Brostock, so I figured that it would seem suitable to toss that little bit in there.

These pictures are all from my backyard/dock (all were taken with a 10 MP Norcent handheld digital camera).

http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/5159/liquidforcebrostockbackhx0.jpg

Next time I'm home, I'm going to take that rowboat out onto the lake and get some pictures from out there, and probably from up on some cliffs I can't access by land. Hope you enjoy.

Background I made earlier today inbetween classes. Picture is from a foggy night across the road from my dorm, on my way back from a 7/11... Always carrying that camera... I now realize that this topic should just have been called my pictures, since I have a bunch from Italy that I'd like to post... If a mod sees this post, it would be awesome if he/she could change it to something like "Pictures" or something, but I'm not all that worried about it.

http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/1781/virginiatechbackgroundyn3.jpg

This one is a picture of the empty hallway. The only way to get my camera to not have a flash and to stay in focus is to cover the flash with my finger... Makes for some odd effects in some pictures...

http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/6551/hallwayfm4.jpg

Any comments on any/all of my pictures are welcome. Thanks.

(Message edited by wakeboardern1 on January 14, 2008)

The photos in your last set are horribly underexposed. Is there a manual setting on your camera? If it's dark like that, you really need to drag the shutter and have the camera on a tripod. The same applies for photos #1 & 3. #2 isn't bad. But a smaller aperature would have created some better bokeh.

Smaller f-stop (number-wise) but that's a larger opening (aperture).

Good advice, AP, just didn't want to see anyone get confused from your wording above.

Yeah, the last set of pictures were really just spur of the moment things. I was hoping the camera would come up with some better pictures, but it was foggy and damp, and the camera would continuously catch reflections of the water in the air. Drove me nuts.

If I could get a tripod to work with it, I'd jump on it. I just hunted down the exposure settings, and I can get that shot from the street in a much better manner now. I've gone through every menu available, and I just noticed that there's a sunset option, which would have helped for those darker shots. The first one, I was counting on it shooting a picture like that, I was taking a picture of the sun, and I was counting on past experience with this camera to do that. There was also a boat out in the water, and the way it silhouetted the area that the boat is made me happy. The third one didn't turn out half as well as I would have liked. However, the liquid force background I made for myself (the link on the first post), I was pretty satisfied with, just because it had a certain feel that reminds me of a summer evening out on the lake. Plus, I have some kind of obsession for abstract art similar to that (used to make a lot of forum signatures on photoshop), and I liked how the picture turned out like it did. Just a personal preference.

I'm far from any kind of experienced photographer, just a guy with a nifty little camera who likes to take pictures... But one who didn't know (prior to your post) about the extra tricks I could do with it. Thanks for the critique.

Thanks Rich, I always have a hard time explaining aperature because it is counterintuitive. Smaller number = bigger opening.

Nick- If you are familiar with Photoshop, you should really edit your photos there. Look at the histograms. I took your background and saw the histogram showed how underexposed it was. Just some quick adjustments and you can see how the photo was improved. I'm not as proficient at PS as some people but you can see the difference.

Oh that's tight. I never messed with histograms much. Looks like I'll be looking into the deeper functions of photoshop over the next couple of weeks. Thanks again man.

wakeboardern1 01-19-2008 7:30 PM

Yeah, email 'em to me, that would be great.

New pictures. Got bored and took a trip on the jetski with my video camera, which turns out to have a relatively decent camera mode on it. Here are some of them after a little bit of tweaking on photoshop. ALL C & C welcome. Thanks for looking.
