Did anyone get the new Canon 40D yet? I was looking into the 30D for a long time and now there is a better one. Just wondering if anyone thinks it is worth going with the 40D over the 30D.

Also, is anyone looking to sell their 30D? Let me know.

yep - I'm sitting here thinking about the 40D.

In my mind, there is no question.

The 40d kit comes with the 35-135mm f3.5 Image Stabilizing lens.. The Stabilizing is worth 4 F-stops. Plus, the 40d has the self sensor cleaner, where-as the 30d does not. 40d is 6.5 fps, 30d is 3fps.

I don't remember what the 30d kit has for a lens but it's nothing like the 40d's.

The 40d at $1499
The 30d at $1299 ??? (can't remember)

no brainer for me.

I'd go for the 40D as well but the 30D is actually 5 fps.

Just picked up the 40D and absolutely love it. I don't really notice much difference in speed against the 30D, but have yet to use it out on the boat. The liveview is interesting to say the least, just doesn't seem like it should be on an SLR but it is a fun feature to show others. The LCD screen is incredible. It is easier to notice any focusing or lighting issues, again compared to the 30D. I couldn't be happier with the purchase.

Jason- as soon as you are able to shoot wakeboarding with it, I would be very interested in your review of the AI servo autofocus mode. It would be most revealing shooting either from a chase boat or shooting from land. (i.e. so that the subject is moving at a different speed than the camera, or so that the camera is stationary and the subject is moving. I want to know how well AI servo tracks a moving wakeboarder.) Thanks in advance.

Or go out and shoot a car license plate coming or going away from you, preferably around 30 mph at 6.5 fps. That would give it a good test. Shoot jpegs with the cam set to medium sharpening and see how many keepers you get from the full burst.

helix_rider 09-27-2007 6:17 AM

Rich, this may seem foolish, but when you say 'medium sharpening' what setting are you talking about? Not the image size is it?

richd 09-27-2007 7:38 AM

If you're shooting jpegs the camera is controlling the sharpening via the picture style settings. In order to evaluate focus you need an image that's not either unsharpened which will appear soft even if in focus, or an oversharpened image which can hide AF error, thus the meduium setting.

When you get a chance take some comparable shots with in cam sharpening turned off and then cranked all the way up and you'll be amazed at the difference.

If you shoot RAW it doesn't matter because your RAW convertor applies some default sharpening and you then sharpen to taste but you'll get way more shots out of a consecutive burst shooting jpegs and with the car (or boat) test you want to see how well the cam holds AF over a burst in aiservo. Most of the prosumer bodies will hold AF for a few frames at least.
