40K budget, what boat to get?

We are goin to sell our 01 SAN and get another boat, boss man is looking to spend around 40 on it, wanted to get yalls opinion on mastercraft and malibu or if we should stay with nautique? as long as it has perfect pass and good speakers im happy, I got all the lead and weights needed already, what yall think?

chattwake 03-20-2012 6:27 AM

The only nautique I'd consider if I was in your shoes would be a 2007+ 210. However, you're going to be hard pressed to find even an '07 for $40k. I'm not sure what year VLX you'd be able to find for $40k either. Maybe an '06? You could probably find a nice '07-'08 X1 for around $40k or a little less. Since you only asked about BU or MC, I'm not going to suggest other boats.

CJ7 03-20-2012 6:51 AM

im open to all suggestions,

simplej 03-20-2012 7:00 AM

maybe look for a left over/ gently used year or two old axis...
just a thought

Gryphon 03-20-2012 7:04 AM

I had the same budget roughly and picked up a new (2011) Axis A20 for under 40k and it is well equipped. There are deals out there you just need to look hard for them.

simplej 03-20-2012 7:05 AM

tige r20 left over is another good option, small but will be around 40k if its a left over

AndyManCan 03-20-2012 7:06 AM

I just helped my friend purchase a 2006 VLX for 41500, it has a great system and all the ballast tanks and lots of options. We took it for a demo and the wake is good, IMO you need 4 people in the boat to make it great or extra sacs in the rear compartments. I have a 2011 WS LSV that I have 100k into it and its comparable wake just not all the fancy new electronics (which are probably less reliable).

03-20-2012 7:21 AM

I've seen a 2011 axis vandal for 49,900. A 2010 would be close to your price range. You should be able to get a 2006.210 or a few 07's. You need to decide if you want a larger beam boat(102" vs 98"). Why not update your 2001? Recover vinyl, update stereo, plumb in all ballast...

tampawake 03-20-2012 7:49 AM

At this point in my life I wish I had bought the biggest boat I could afford. So gonna depend on how hard core a rider you are! No point in going with another 210 unless you can get the new hull. Same thing as an MC with the 205v hull. To me zero point in either of those boats since you will just be getting the same exact boat. Good luck in you search!

wakereviews 03-20-2012 7:55 AM

There are a few MB's out there that would be close. 2009 B52 TWBs for 43k to 47k

chattwake 03-20-2012 9:02 AM

You should be able to find a 2010 A22 for $40k that is nicely equipped. I know of a 2011 A20 that's got a z5, wetsounds pro60's, and 56 hours on it for $45k.

The A22 will have a slightly better wake than the A20, and will have a fair amount more room to boot.

lakesurfer 03-20-2012 9:16 AM

Adding to the Axis/MB 21 type list (ie. newer boat), one more boat I would take a look at if I had a $40K budget would be Centurion Avalanche (22' with 100" beam). Has a lot of storage and space. Will have a solid wakeboard wake and a top 5 surf wake. The deep V hull gives it great ride in the chop but will make it a little more sensitive to weight (side to side) for wakeboarding. If you are focused on wakeboarding, make sure it is a 09 or newer (the prop rotation changed this year and it was suppose to really help clean up the wakeboard wake).

As always, drive as many boats as possible. Every boat has different things that you may or may not like.

chattwake 03-20-2012 10:08 AM

^^^^^ what he said. Demo Demo Demo. $40k is a lot of money. Spend it wisely.

migs 03-20-2012 10:13 AM

1-2 year old sanger V215. Rock solid boat.

johnny_defacto 03-20-2012 1:26 PM

MC......You can find an 04+ xstar for $40k (when I was looking, i found multiple 05-06 for around 40k) This wake is polar opposite of your current wake.

Nautique.... I agree, no reason to get the same boat again, so go for 07+ SAN if you can find it for 40k, not sure if that is possible. You will like this wake coming from your SAN.

Malibu.... you can find 06-07 VLX's in the 40's all day, should be able to get it for 40k after talking them down. My vote is for this boat, but much like the xstar, this wake is a polar opposite to your SAN.

I know you only asked for these 3 companies, but since Axis is malibu.... Axis A22. If you like how the VLX feels, drives, sounds, turns, and if you like the wake, then you will like the A22. For 40k you can get a newer year Axis (2010-2011) than any of the other 3 boats, plus you will have some warranty left. The other day I found a 2011 A22 fairly loaded for $46k brand new at a dealer. I know there was wiggle room there.

johnny_defacto 03-20-2012 1:33 PM

Also, my wife and I were at the same budget as you at $40k. She wanted a VLX, I was open to an xstar or newer 210. After demoing all the boats, she was sold on the VLX, as was I, plus we could not find the SAN for under 50, and the xstars in the 40's were high hours and not in great shape. So the during the VLX hunt, I set up a demo for a new axis, after she drove it and realized it basically IS A VLX, that we could have a new boat, pick our colors and options, have a full warranty, and all for a few thousand more than a used 06-07 vlx with no warranty.... she was sold on the axis. Plus, we financed, and a loan on a new boat was better than used, so the price difference was a wash.

dougr 03-20-2012 2:31 PM

look for a vride, its the same hull as the pre 09 vlx, the 04 05 06 vrdie is the sv23 hull and different than the 05 to 08 vlx, same hull as the older 03 etc vlx. great boat for the price and you get the malibu fit and finish without all the bling. good luck

johnny_defacto 03-20-2012 2:57 PM

yeah doug, totally forgot about vride. Look at 09+ vride, it is the v25 hull (vlx 05-08 hull). brand new they are around $55k, so you should be able to find a used 09 or 10 for $40k.

besides some billet and other bling, the vride does not offer the 300 front ballast. no biggie, probably plumb in a fat sack with pumps on switches for under $500 if you do it yourself if that would be a deal breaker.

simplej 03-21-2012 1:33 PM

here. just a thought
http://www.nelems.com/openrealty/lis...hp?listingID=5

Gryphon 03-21-2012 1:44 PM

That is the one I was considering before I purchased my A20 but in the end price won out and the A20 was a fair bit cheaper than that boat is.

CJ7 03-27-2012 11:25 AM

let me put it this way, we ride on the weekends during the summer, more surfing than wakeboarding but we do wakeboard in the mornings when its glass, any other time we are booze cruising. so need good ballast, great system, and a good surf wake

polarbill 03-27-2012 11:52 AM

In that case I would look at 21TWB MB's, Centurion Avalanches, might find a 23 enzo for around 40k, Tige 22 or 24V(VE), used Axis, newer Sanger V215.

ReSession 03-27-2012 12:58 PM

I'm surprised no one has thrown Supreme Boats into the mix...I bought a leftover leftover model (brand NEW) for way less than your max price a few years back (and actually made a few grand on my trade-in)! I understand wanting to stick with the familiar brand names, but I wouldn't count them out! For what you'll spend on a used 2004-2007 model, you may be able to find a NEW leftover Supreme V208, V212 or V220 model?

NEW 2008 Supreme V220 with 0 hours
@ $37k - http://www.boats.com/boat-details/Su...tion/110898601
2009 Supreme V208 with 75 hours @ $39k - http://onlyinboards.com/Details.aspx?ID=31866
2009 Supreme V211 with 77 hours @ $39k - http://www.boattrader.com/listing/20...me-V212-202617
2007 Supreme V212 with 33 hours @ $37k - http://onlyinboards.com/Details.aspx?ID=31967
2007 Supreme V212 with 40 hours @ $38k - http://www.boats.com/boat-details/Sk...V212/118995721

Good luck!

pureblue 03-27-2012 1:56 PM

I have an open mind to any boat brand as I hope to get something in the 40k range in the next 1-2 years. But I am 99% into wakeboarding. The supreme and centurion boats look sweet, but they are always praised for their wake surf abilities. How do these boats compare to some of the more well known wakeboard specific boats? Anyone have pictures of loaded down boats to compare?

waketowake 03-27-2012 2:31 PM

Just keep looking until your happy. We looked for a year before we found a 07 X-Star with 100 hours for 40K. Ebay, no reserve is a champ.

smitty1258 03-28-2012 4:40 AM

I can get you setup right now and be loaded minus the wedge, damn good deal right here

You can get a brand new left over 2011 for mid 40's that makes this wake....

Kingsriver 03-31-2012 5:57 PM

I have been begging my wife for a new boat and she has said no at every turn. She has now told me I could buy a boat as long as it did not cost more than 40k. I want to learn to surf and we always have a big crowd. I wanted a new MB 21 or WB 23 but that 20k over her budget? Any thoughts on what boat to buy that we can surf and board and hold a crew of 10? We live in Central California?

shawndoggy 03-31-2012 6:41 PM

Tal, this one is local to me (know nothing about it but saw it listed on my CL)... not too far of a drive for you... http://reno.craigslist.org/boa/2919710782.html

OnlyButter 03-31-2012 11:41 PM

I got a '11 Supra 21v with 82 hours for $45k. Just gotta be patient and willing to wait for the right deal.

Just to give you some idea of what the market for "lightly used" MB's looks like...

You could have purchased my 2012 MB F21 Tomcat fully loaded (and I mean decked to the nines) for $49,500. It only had 55 hours on it but it sat on OIB for months at this price. It finally sold last month. Where were you?? j/k

Seriously, if you want an MB you can easily get one in the $40's. I sold my 2009 TWB for $42,500 last year with 130 hours it. Imagine that same boat selling this year with a third season on the clock... might have sold for < $40. So I'm guessing a 2009 - 2010 is easily found in the low $40's.

Here are a couple of other ideas that caught my eye in the low-$40's... Seems to me like there are lots of good options.

Do you know whee the dealer was that had the a22? Looking to spend under 50k on a new 22 to 23.

Gryphon 04-02-2012 12:15 PM

Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey dealer had an 2011 A22 but it wasnt close to being loaded by any means for 46k.

polarbill 04-02-2012 12:35 PM

That looks like an A20 to me.

Why did you sell it. I am trying to get my wife up to get a 21TC but I thunk it might be to small. Looking at a couple 240enzo's. 07/08 with low hours? Did you buy bigger and MB again ? Thanks for the advise

dougr 04-02-2012 8:19 PM

If u are looking to surf. Get an Enzo. I had bu's before centurions. I loved them, but we use to board all the time. Out lake gets blown out by noon so we started surfing. As years past, we started surfing more and boarding less( my crew is late 30s). Anyway, u can find a nice. Enzo230 for 40k and makes a killer sired wave and a great boarding wake. The bu will not make a great surf wake without a ton of weight. I mean. Bags everywhere. While they will work the centurions make a killer. Wake with little ballast. Hope this helps. Good luck

wakemitch 04-02-2012 9:06 PM

if you want to surf and party look at centurion, tige, supreme, mb, and sanger. MC and CC are great for wakeboarding, but if you are mainly wakesurfing its not worth the effort to get a good wake (if you even can).

Raf1985 04-02-2012 9:49 PM

BTW what are you selling your SAN for? I'm in the market and might be able to afford it....
