how the heck do you do it? it seems as if a nosegrab would be easiest, but when you let go with your front hand to grab.....do you not go to revert?

Check my profile pic...I do Nose & Method rolls off the D-Up. Basically to compensate for letting go with your lead hand you have to bring the handle across your body as if it were in both hands. Off the wake a indy Mexican-backroll is easiest. Good luck, the nose off the D-up feels sweet & is very smooth!
