We are talking about Gasoline, not exhaust hehe. Well I am getting my first boat this summer, and just wondering how much money I am going to throw at the gas pump. I am going to be going out probably 5 times a week with 2 other guys. How much do you usually use during the summer?

greatdane 05-06-2008 12:37 AM

My guess for a boat of 4 riding hard all day...

CC 2001: 20 gallons a day
CC SAN: 30 gallons a day
BU VLX: 40 gallons a day
MC XSTAR: 50 gallons a day

The numbers are a guess but probably in the ballpark. I would love it if someone tested boats for this.

trevorcurry 05-06-2008 12:40 AM

It also depends on how much extra driving you do. Such as driving from the dock to the good water, or if you're on a private lake then its all ride time.

shaggystud06 05-06-2008 2:33 AM

Well how about a Mobius LSV. Good water is a 5 minute boat ride from the dock and we will be mainly riding, taking 2 or 3 sets for around 3 or 4 people. Wow... who wants to do all of that math?

malibuboarder75 05-06-2008 5:37 AM

2 sets X 3 people X 3 gallons = 18 gallons
3 setss X 4 people X 3 gallons = 36 gallons

That is assuming 3 gallons of gas per set. You probably won't be burning that much unless you are heavily weighted, but it is a good assumption after factoring idling and cruising.

liljohn 05-06-2008 7:17 AM

07 vlx half a tank for a good 8 hours of ridding with alot of ballast.

mendo247 05-06-2008 7:20 AM

^are you serious?^

Ive seen a weighted VLX burn a half tank in four!

sanddragon2004 05-06-2008 8:15 AM

good thing gd isnt a scientists! lol.

seriously a v8 powerd san burns 20gallons a day less then a v8 powered xstar?

so many variables here man. weight, number of people in boat, prop? how often riders are falling and having to power back out of the hole.

id be willing to bet there isnt that big of difference in fuel consumption between a PCM 350hp v8 and an Indmar 350hp v8.

id say that the time from dock to fast water, like disco bay is where you burn your fuel.

sanddragon2004 05-06-2008 8:16 AM

o and also if you have good riders and can cruize at optimal rpm vs having to yank some one learning up 10 times in a row you may save some fuel.

liljohn 05-06-2008 9:14 AM

try re proping and no need to power pick up or run wide open every where.

shaggystud06 05-06-2008 10:45 AM

ok to make this easier on everyone... how much gas do you use in a normal set for you? didnt mean to turn this into a science fair

xmarksthespot 05-06-2008 12:01 PM

yea...back in the day the MC Stars and stripes burned more than you would think with it full of weight, with no lead or water was like a hybrid!... to many variables...My boat (01 X-Star) with no weight (Dont know when the last time that was) Burns hardly anything...with 2800+ lbs is will use a depressing amount!...The price you pay for a bitchin Wake!

mkperceptions 05-06-2008 3:40 PM

We ride all day as much as anyone can handle. uses about 18 gallons but that is my 4cyl i/o

thor 05-06-2008 4:28 PM

We normally take 6 sets per day total on a heavily weighted Sanger V215 and use about 30-35 gallons. Each set is about a half hour in length. We also have a 15-20 minute drive to fast water out of Discovery Bay and then however much longer it takes to find smooth water.

On my SangAir, I can run all day on around 30 gallons of gas with about 1800lbs of ballast and 4 riders. We normally launch out of Paradise Point and good water is only a 5 to 10 minute boat ride from the ramp. When I say all day I mean about 7 to 8 hours.

Either way we use about 30 gallons of gas in a day which at $4.00 per gallon translates into $120.00 per day in gas. Add to that beer, snacks and lunch for the group and we easily spend $200 everytime we hit the water.

wesley_is_wake 05-06-2008 4:55 PM

WakeboardingMag should do a review in the 09' Boat Buyers Guide about how fuel efficient each boat is. It would definantly let some people see the reality of what they're paying for.

kko13 05-06-2008 5:58 PM

in my 03 tige 22v stock ballast i avg 4.5 gallons per hr. my friends 03 210 stock ballast uses more than twice as much.

(Message edited by kko13 on May 06, 2008)

rmcronin 05-06-2008 6:34 PM

I must not ride nearly as hard or weight my Supra nearly as much as everyone above. 10 gallons for 3-5 sets does the trick just fine in my boat.

kickflip_mj 05-06-2008 6:56 PM

i go out with 3 people on the 07 VLX and it used to be around 25 per person for 2 sets each, i dont know now due to the jump in gas prices i think its going to be 30 a person.

deltaridah 05-06-2008 7:02 PM

hey michael I'm looking at the same boat how many gallons do you go thru for those 6 sets? How long a set and how much extra ballast?

veritas 05-06-2008 8:18 PM

With our Mobius XLV we go through like...10 gallons a day usually. That's on probably 2.5 hours between boarding and other stuff, plus another half hour or so idling around the lake just cruisin.

I think a lot depends on how you drive it.

dnannen 05-06-2008 8:39 PM

We rode 5 hours sunday on our brand new sanger not even 20 hours yet and burnt 11 gallons with a 500 lb fat sac and 6 dudes. Dont forget stock ballast 1000lbs too.

(Message edited by dnannen on May 06, 2008)

(Message edited by dnannen on May 06, 2008)

14 gallons a night. 1 rider, 1 set.

deltaridah 05-06-2008 9:02 PM

damn in my sanger v210 i usually use 20-25 gallons for a day on the weekends. which is usually 6 sets and 2k in ballast an 3 peeps. 11 gallons doesnt quite sound right but good for u

kickflip_mj 05-06-2008 9:12 PM

Soli-- i really havnt checks my gas to hour ratio but it seems like i put about $40 in for me and my lady and my buddy puts about 20 in for a nice afternoon delta session, its worth a couple of hours, and the boats loaded with stock ballest and wedge down everytime. i love my Malibu so the gas/ hours isnt bad at all, but honestly what boat is great for gas?

deltaridah 05-06-2008 9:18 PM

thats not bad michael so 60 bucks for a day prob about 6 sets. I usually ride the same way me my girl and one of my boys. i was worried about buying a bigger boat that it would suck down a lot more gas

kickflip_mj 05-06-2008 9:25 PM

its really not bad you know around 60 to 80 bucks, for about 3 hours... its pretty typical gas usage. you know its hard to track the gass bc sometimes i have some left over for the next day.

Has any body seen this?

With an oversized backlit display, this water-resistant fuel manager from Faria can be easily read day or night. This simple-to-install unit displays fuel flow in gallons or liters per hour. Displays total or trip fuel used, calculates fuel remaining, and includes a selectable low fuel alarm. roverjohn 05-07-2008 1:58 PM

I know that there are non marine versions of that that are more like $59. I'll try to find them and post back.

kko13 05-07-2008 4:26 PM

how can you judge gas consumption by "sets" if one guy runs a 20min set and the other a 30min that creates a variable. of course the guy that runs 15 20min sets is going to use less gas than the guy who runs 15 30 min. sets. only true way is gph. 4 riders spent 4 hrs on water doing whatever and used 32 gallons wich would = 8 gph. so 32 gallons at $3.50/gallon = $112/4= $28 per person for the trip.(just for an example) so you guys that have to run the longer distances to find the water you want dont have to foot the fuel bill for the rest of the crew. i mean if you want to its fine i just think splitting entire fuel cost between all that ride is the best way. gas prices suxazz right now so this is what its coming down to. well atleast for me anyways i always just took donations but now i have to lay out how the gas bill is going to work and once they goto the gas station 1 time and see it take 2 swipes of the AMEX card to fill it up because it cut me off after the first hundred they dont bitch at all. everybody has been real cool. i think i have only lost one person who didnt want to play by the rules so he stopped coming out.

(Message edited by kko13 on May 07, 2008)

deltaridah 05-07-2008 4:31 PM

just wait gas hot over 120 a barrel today. many anaylists put it at 150-200 dollars by oct. Here comes $8 a gallon very soon. Boat sells are going to go to close to zero very soon.

kko13 05-07-2008 4:55 PM

dont say that!!!!!!!!!! that would put my wife and i fuel bill to get to work and back at $400 dollars a week.

deltaridah 05-07-2008 5:26 PM

ya I'm glad i didnt buy a new boat like i was planning on. I dont even think i will be able to afford to ride maybe 1 time a week but gas will be a few hundred a week to just get to work. 30 gallons times 8 bucks = 240 dollars a day and my boat uses way less gas than most boats

greg2 05-07-2008 5:57 PM

Derrick, I need your set up 5hrs/11 gal...that's just a tick over 2 gal/hr. I can't get there with no ballast.

With the ballast I run I averaged about 6 gal/hr over 110 hrs last year.

kickflip_mj 05-07-2008 5:58 PM

why do we talk about this?? i know the gas prices arnt gonna keep me off the water.. im just going to have to eat more rice and chicken for dinner.lol

deltaridah 05-07-2008 6:54 PM

i guess some people are just loaded... or have parents who are. I cant afford 1000 dollars a week in gas and i make 6 figures. with two days on the water and commuting to work.

wake_upppp 05-07-2008 8:47 PM

Kevin, don't know what is wrong with your friends V210 but my 06 with stock front ballast plus custom rear ballast runs 4.5 GPH @ 23.5 MPH.

kickflip_mj 05-07-2008 9:51 PM

soli- were did that come from?? i hope you realize that was a joke and talking about gas prices isnt gonna change a thing. personaly i dont know anyone who can spend that much a week. when i go out its an hour or two a day, wich turns out to be pretty cheap when it comes to gas bc i at least got a short session in and i can do the same every day.

mkperceptions 05-07-2008 9:58 PM

The analyst (one guy) that said that is notorious for scare tactics to get the market to go up just a little more so he can sell at the top. There is no shortage in oil or gas and we are actually using less. The barrel being as high as it is is only because of investors. It should be trading in the 60 dollar range but because the market has been so soft that is what investors are investing in. If you watch the dollar it actually has made a decent come back this week. It is all on speculation. If it does hit 150 a barrel I can tell you we are in more trouble than you think. opening ANWAR will not be a debatable option it will just happen.

robertr720 05-07-2008 10:46 PM

I run a 97 sport with about 3000 lbs when you count people and my 26 gallon tank will pull about 10 or 12 20 minute sets. We don't really idle around at all. It easily lasts a day. So doing the math about 80 bucks for a full day of riding.
