I asked Todd at Proctor surfboards to build James a board based on his Titanium series construction. Fairly interesting construction with a Kevlar "compression patch" on the deck, carbon patches over the stringers to prevent heel dents and delam on the perimeter stringers.

Todd sent me photos of the blank off the machine:

and it will be delivered the same time the Coil board will. lol

brewkettle 04-17-2009 11:38 AM

Well i see you are spending lot of $ on James this year to find the best board that works for him. Its what every good parent does.

ollies_drew 04-18-2009 7:05 AM

I thought james had pro Model board with walker project. Do they not care if he is out riding all these other boards. That sounds weird????

(Message edited by ollies_drew on April 18, 2009)

I believe the concept you are referring to, Drew, is a "contract". As I've stated before, James has no contract and never has with The Walker Project.

My second post, the fifth in the thread from about 7 months ago.

http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/621855.html

ollies_drew 04-19-2009 7:27 AM

Gotcha, I was just wondering.

caskimmer 04-19-2009 8:30 AM

A pro model without residuals? ouch

04-19-2009 9:09 AM

LOL - yeah, because the 40 units Mike will sell of the JWPM in a year will devestate James long-term financial goals. I don't know how he'll EVER recover from the loss of $200 in the 48 years he has left to work.

What's with the Zap consortium on this subject?

caskimmer 04-19-2009 9:49 AM

consortium? I don't work for Zap. I did some freelance work for their next video and have friends on the team but I'm not an employee or representative in any shape or form.

I've just never heard of a "pro bono" pro model (in any boardsport) before and it got my curiosity going. It might not that big deal to him but it makes it that much harder for the next guy.

Also while the numbers might be minimal IMO that type of practice is detrimental to the development of wakesurfing as a legitimate sport.

(Message edited by CAskimmer on April 19, 2009)

(Message edited by CAskimmer on April 19, 2009)

I just liked your profile on their team page. Cool shades.

Yeah, won't argue the sport development issue, it'd be great if Mike could sell a million units and kick James 25%, just isn't in the cards and folks aren't lining up to sign James. The best deal that James was ever offered was 2 free boards and no residual or other monetary compensation. What does a used board sell for, maybe $150? That was before the full effect of the recession. I'd guess the infancy of the industry and sport don't drive rider sponsorships higher. I'm also sure that the current economy as hit manufacturers hard.

brewkettle 04-22-2009 12:02 PM

Surfdad ,
i am ready to see the 2 boards , man the proctor will be the bomb.

04-22-2009 12:18 PM

ME TOO! The Proctor is still not past the promised delivery date - I got this email from Todd on 4/15, so it will fall past due on 4/30:

Hi Jeff,

Thanks….I hope your Easter was good too. James’s board is coming along smooth. The design is complete and looks like it should go great… the glassing process for the Proxy construction is all that is left. It took some time to get the parabolic blank made since it was such a unique shape. Time table looks to be another week and a half to two weeks till she’s ready to ride.

Speak soon,

Aloha,

Todd

I don't even want to talk about the Coil anymore!!!! In March Mike indicated that he talked with the Brasington brothers about the fact that it had been over 2 months since the deposit was received. NOW I have this vision of them high 5'ing and asking how long do you think we can drag this build out?!

I am estimating that I WILL get the Coil, this year. So that leaves 8 more months.

brewkettle 04-22-2009 12:34 PM

at least its not the xbc board. do you think the sun will kill the kevlar , and have you used the 2 oz. 49 cloth

04-22-2009 12:59 PM

Kevlar does degrade in UV - so the epoxy has some sort of UV inhibitor but Todd's not telling me. It was one of the things that intrigued me about the construction - I couldn't figure that out - it could be that he's painting over the Kevlar so that it just LOOKS like the Kevlar is visible.

I'm a big fan of the 1.7 oz Kevlar I use it as the sandwich layer now. It's laminates out like a 4 oz at half the weight. Super strong in compression.

"I just liked your profile on their team page. Cool shades."

yeah, I'm the team photographer for a majority of the skim companies as well. (and I've been doing this for 11 years) I'm for the development and progression of the sports I love, not individual interests.

(Message edited by CAskimmer on April 22, 2009)

caskimmer 04-22-2009 1:47 PM

"Kevlar does degrade in UV - so the epoxy has some sort of UV inhibitor but Todd's not telling me"

Typically a manufacturer's marine grade version of epoxy is UV "resistant" (aircraft grade is still the standard in composites and what I assume you're using)

04-22-2009 2:04 PM

I believe that I read on Todd's website that he is using Resin Research, if that's the case then he would be using the RR CE (Blue) version. I know that RR sold a UV Absorber - whatever that is in the past no doubt what they add to the regular RR to make the CE. From the website:

UV Absorber

To protect sensitive substrates such as urethane foam, UV sensitive polymers and woods. Comes as a liquid mixed into the epoxy side of the system.

caskimmer 04-22-2009 6:04 PM

Resin Research is what I've got experience with too. The 1980 is what's usually used except for white boards then either 2000 or 2020 was used (can't remember which). The supplier had them listed as aircraft(1980) and marine grade at the time.

brewkettle 04-23-2009 5:51 AM

yea , must be right , the kevlar gives a green finish on his boards.

04-23-2009 7:16 AM

yea , that does not look like your normal shape that you like to use, what kind of clear does he use after the paint work???

I don't know, I'll have to ask about the clear Todd uses.

hawaj 05-06-2009 3:44 AM

Hehe funny Jeff how you are allways there where my interest go. I was checking Todds web and titanium boards with kevlar three days ago and now I revealed this tread!! ...and alredy ordered board there ...wow
But it happend several times before. Hey Petr! Long time no hear. How have you been? I do believe it must be that great minds think alike! Or, we see the same display ads.

Those stringers are basswood, but they are painted. I can't remember the blank manufacturer at the moment, but you can get different colored stringers. I guess the wood is pressure treated to infuse the color down into the grain a bit. Then when you shape it, the color still shows up. Those are black stringers.

ollies_drew 05-06-2009 11:12 AM

People at ZAP are crazy!!!! There was no consortium either Jeff. i was just asking how that deal worked. I technically have nothing to do with "ZAP", just Phase 5. BUt I guess I will always be apart of zap. And if James ever gets 25% kick back off a board please let me know what company is paying that much. HAHA That would be Awesome. Anyways this is another cool thread. I am starting to think your garage looks like mine with boards all over the place.

05-06-2009 12:08 PM

Yeah Drew, my shop building is seriously out-of-control with boards.

I got some additional pictures from Todd today as they are laminating.

the last pic, i see green room epoxy in the blue and white jugs that are side by side

Is it? I think that's RR CE in the gallon jugs to the left.

The Kevlar patch being fitted:

Carbon hinge tail being applied. One of the issues folks experience with the parabolic stringers is heel dents along the stringer. With a light glass schedule, the deck glass rips at the stringer and then makes a right angle across the board - deadens the board substantially when patched. This happened to James just before the Centurion contest last year.

The carbon patches, hopefully, will eliminate or minimize the heel denting problem. Todd makes some incredibly thin tailed boards and the carb helps provide some pop on those.

Those canards do look like the 4wfs, don't they? They are actually a single FCS plug which are installed post-glass, pre-hotcoat, whereas the Futures rail boxes are a pre-glass install (mostly - I cheat sometimes when I am bagging the exterior glass ). The new FCS Fusion boxes are installed pre-glass for that added strength.

This board should receive a graphic on the bottom and then a gloss coat.
